So I start up the car and hear a little noise like the starter stayed engaged a little long but I wasn't too worried about that since I have heard it before.

Then when I shift it into reverse there is this very very loud squealing noise. I quickly put it back into park and the noise stopped and then put it back into reverse and the noise was gone.

Any idea what the noise could have been? If the noise returns I will bring it back to the dealer since it is under warranty.

The car is 2009 with a 2.0l auto and only has 21,000 km on it but this morning it sounded like it had 421,000km.

Should I be worried or is there a logical reason for the noise.

Thanks for any advice

Did you hear a hissing noise as well? There are a couple of things that could have happened. It might just have been moisture on the belt, which is fairly common (usually you would hear a hissing sound coming from the pulley area). Some more serious issue could be that you have a belt slipping; which you would hope is just a bad belt. Worse would be if you have a bad bearing causing the squeal. And I think worst sould be that something has seized up and a pulley is not rotating.

I don't remember hearing a hissing noise.

Hopefully it was nothing serious but I have never heard such a noise in any car I owned, especially one that is so new.

It only happened once I put it into gear, if it was the belt I would think it would have made the noise when I first started it.

Well, im having the problem of noises in morning too , my car is fairly new, the belt looks like its in PERFECT condition, but it only makes the noise when in D or R. Its going into dealer on Monday to get belts replaced. I noticed if i sprayed wd40 ont he belt, the sound goes away, meaning the belts are just dried out like any other kind of rubber dries out. Belts are covered 3 yrs udner warranty so change em out if the noise gets worse and worse.
