Team Canada's world junior captain Patrice Cormier was ejected from a QMJHL game in overtime when he delivered a head shot to Quebec Remparts defenceman Mikael Tam.

Cormier, a forward for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, came off the bench for a line change and cut through the faceoff circle at centre ice, laying what appeared to be an elbow on Tam in open ice.

Following the hit, Tam was convulsing on the ice before being taken off on a stretcher. Tam suffered trauma to the skull and brain and lost many teeth. He is now in stable condition in hospital and will remain under observation for at least two days.

Cormier, a native of Cap-Pele, New Brunswick, was traded to the Huskies on January 7th. The 19-year-old was playing in just his third game with the team.

Following the game, Remparts head coach Patrick Roy filed a complaint with the Quebec Provincial Police. They collected several testimonies, and it appears that Cormier will face discipline from the QMJHL.

On Monday, TSN's Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie said "This Cormier elbow is sickening on so many levels. I have never been so discouraged about the game of hockey as now."

True... He did something similar in a world junior hockey exhibition game against Sweden. Not quite as vicious of an elbow, but deliberate none the less.

What a brutal brutal play. Funny how Roy wants the police involved... yet when his son was the one who should be charged, he didnt want them to have anything to do with it. Man I hate Patrick Roy!

hope he doesn't get banned for life, shit like this happens all the time, but it's only when someone gets hurt that they punish it.

That was brutal, and so blatantly deliberate! Seriously, where the heck is the respect and sportsmanship in sports nowadays...

Banned from any hockey league is what I think.

What is he thinking hurting a fellow asian brotha? :chuckle

In all seriousness...brutal but we see this in the NHL all the time. The only difference was, he was dumb enough to stick his elbow out whereas someone like Mike Richards (on David Booth), made contact with his shoulder.

1. I was thinking the same thing, but Mikael Tam looks more like Tiger Woods, than say Patrick Chan...

2. Bad hit indeed, but where was Tam looking? Cormier is a d-bag, but I got a feelling it was a missed hit to somewhere else other than Tam's face...

Tam knew someone was coming. Anytime you have your head down skating through open ice, you are always aware someone is going to catch you with open ice contact. You can tell by his reaction in the video, after he dumped the puck in, he turned to avoid whoever was coming for him. Thats when the douche bag stuck out his elbow because he didn't have Tam lined up anymore.

Hey, an asian brotha is an asian brotha! Tiger Woods or not. I'm guessing Tam is Vietnamese/Chinese-French Canadian.

Skating with your head down gets you effed up, legal contact or no legal contact its super bad practice.

I speak from being on both ends.

I'm not arguing this point. Contact is part of hockey. Even in the house league that I play in on Fridays, I make people pay for watching the puck.

However, this is a deliberate attempt to injure! Blind sided flying elbows are NOT part of hockey in anyway. Its assault with a deadly weapon.

P.S. I can't stand Patrick Roy either.

Ya I'm not a big fan of flying elbows, and this should be met with some sort of punishment but not playing hockey forever... I dunno... glad I don't have to make the call!

I am a Roy fan though lol.

Ruling should be, if you deliberately injure someone, you stay off the ice as long as they do. In the case of Bertuzzi on Moore, that would mean the end of his career.
It was a cheap shot, and not what we want representing our Canadian Juniors as the captain... even though the Junior tourney is done, he is still a symbol. And he should be made an example of. That is NOT part of the game, head down or not. I played it for 32 years competitevely, so don't give me that "its part of the game" crap! :bang

Oh, and I am Roy fan.... Habs to the end!! :chuckle

I'm not sure if he should be banned from hockey all together... punished for a long period of time, ok, but banishment. Naw.

The worst he should probably get for it is suspension for the rest of the season plus playoffs. But that's the worst end of the stick.

He'll be back.

Huh? He won't be banned from hockey altogether. He would only be banned from playing junior hockey for the rest of the season, which is a lifetime ban since its his last year anyways. If he gets banned from the juniors, he'll just end up on the AHL affliate team of the New Jersey Devils since he's a draft pick of theirs. I'd like to see him try and target other players while playing with "men".

He shouldnt be banned, but i mean what does it matter if he gets banned anyways, hes already been signed in the N so if it comes down to it, he can just jump up early. He def shouldnt be kicked out for life, but defintely suspended for the season. Skating through the tracks with your head down gets you crushed, no doubt about it, but this wasnt the case, Cormier threw an elbow because Tam slowed up to make the pass, Cormier should have turned with him and took the body to body check, or turned off when he wasnt lined up anymore, the elbow was blatent and cowardess, its not hockey as it should be thats forsure.

Fobio
01-19-2010, 03:40 PM
^^^ so what you're saying is that Cormier MIGHT'VE been going for the body/somewhere else, but didn't line up right and stuck his freaking elbow out instead for a cheap shot?

RedRaptor, I was responding to these comments. That's all.

Maybe another form of punishment is for Cormier to stand still there, and someone can run by with their elbow out. See how he likes it?

ha.

well it appears Cormier came across with the intention to hit him, then as tam turned to make the pass, his movement slowed, so Cormier being a cheap shot artist, threw the elbow out to make sure he still hit him, so id say the intent was defintely there to injure.

Have you ever played hockey? Sticking the elbow out is worth a 2, and in hockey sanctioned by Hockey Canada its worth 2+10 for checking to the head! Since the player he hit was obviously injured, it should be at minimum 5+GM for checking to the head, if not a match for attempt to injure. That was a disgusting hit, and he should be suspended.

That late elbow on Sweden was bad too, neither had the puck, he just wanted to interfere to be a jackass.

If he had dropped his shoulder like someone else said it would still be a penalty according to the Hockey Canada rule book. Unless he hit the shoulder and not the opposing players head.

From TSN.ca

At the Montreal Canadiens training facility in Brossard, Que., enforcer Georges Laraque called it one of the worst hits he's seen in hockey.

"But one thing I can say about (QMJHL commissioner) Gilles Courteau is that he's always been good about giving suspensions and it doesn't matter the name on the back (of the player's jersey),"' said Laraque. "I'm pretty sure he'll be fair with that suspension.

"I'd be surprised if that kid played another game this year. When you look at kids that young, they're not even in the NHL yet and they have their whole future ahead of them and they're shaking on the ice like that. That's pretty scary. It's important to send a message to the youth coming up."

It was a sick cheap shot and has nothing to do with the game. If he wanted to hit him he should have done it fairly.

At least Zack Kassian (see other junior hit) took off his gloves and fought after he destroyed Matt Kennedy. This douche just skates away into the protection of his teammates. If you're gonna be throwing your body around, you better be ready to answer the bell when the other team comes after you.

So, suspension is announced, (http://www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20100125/cormier_suspension_100125/20100125?hub=BritishColumbiaSports) Cormier will be missing the rest of the QMJHL season.

Opinions? Too harsh? Too soft?

For the record, Kassian was just handed a 20 game suspension. He'll be back for his team's final 4 games, and the playoffs. Seems fair to me, it was certainly a suspendable hit, but did not deserve the same sort of punishment Cormier received.

Too soft IMO. Get him the f$@# out of the league. He wants to throw elbows so badly, put him in the ring with Brock Lesner or GSP, let's see how he does against someone who can fight back! :chuckle
