Yup as the title states, I know it's been a long time since I've posted but during my absence (other than work) I've been busy paying thousands of dollars to have my wonderful mazda engine (that's built sooooo well and carefully manufactured) rebuilt :blah

So...

I had it toed to a machine shop when the engine decided to completely die in the middle of the highway ON NEW YEARS EVE :flaming.

And the mechanic called me the monday after that weekend and notified me that the crankshaft had blown, the berings had gone, the 2 valves were bent and ratteling and the sparkplugs were goners. So I went in for the "consultation" and he notified me that mazda engines are really not built for any type of performance and mazda itself is really weak when it comes to engines. So I said fair enough, I have been driving it at high rpms before shifting gears (but not redlining) which a normal engine SHOULD be able to handle...

OH, and the rubber gasket on my oil filter managed to slip off, and all the oil leaked out of the engine to add insult to injury which played a nice part in the blowing of the engine.

So anyways, long story short $2300.00 my engine's as good as new! :chuckle
(Except my valve, it rattles but the mechanic said that's not an issue at all other than noise) and since 2300.00 isn't easy to come across as a 20 year old with high insurance, and other dumb costs. So I decided to leave the valve for now and fix it later on.

Story of my life. Bleh, I love this car but, again never buying a mazda again.

that sucks. im srry to hear that, i've had that done before on my grand prix (before my mazda3) what year is your car and when you say driving it at higher rpms how high are we talking?

Well high rpm's would be around 6 not any higher, and this was on occasion... But I still don't find that reason enough for an engine crankshaft to blow! There's a redline for a reason!

I doubt high RPMs killed it... Engines can take high rpms all day long, providing you give it oil and cool it properly. I'm GUESSING here, since only the OP knows all the details, but I'd put my money on lack of oil killing the engine (From the oil leak the OP mentioned).

Well it did play a large part in the matter, but I'm guessing that combined with revving high right before it died had a part to do with it.

o rly high rpms all day ?
I'm gonna go try ur theory on my winter beater :)

Dude, the Mazda engine in your winter beater loves high RPMs... It has a very flat power curve! That being said, you break it, you bought it! I should sneak over at night and throw sugar, salt and broken up pine cones in the gas tank........ :chuckle

Hey dude, sorry to hear about your engine. Definitely could be an oil-related problem, that's why I put an oil pressure gauge in mine. By the time the dash light comes on, its usually too late!

PS - you should drop by (http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=521588&postcount=7207) the "spotted" thread some time. With your unique car, people tend to recognize your actions (http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=485987&postcount=6568) on the road.

If the oil was drained, there is your problem! It has nothing to do with Mazda or build quality. Any motor will pop with no oil. Mazda's are very reliable as far as motors go, generally speaking. As for not holding power, I run over 230WHP, drive hard, and even still have the stock clutch in mine :)
