Here's the scenerio:
For those that deal with the rush hr traffic @ Steeles @ Woodbine.
I was heading home on Steeles turning left onto Woodbine.
Left turn light already finished and 3 cars were able to make it.
There was a car in the middle of the intersection turning on to Woodbine waiting for the traffic heading west to clear.
I was sitting at the lights and the guy behind me kept honking his horn wanting me to go into the intersection and sit behind the guy that was already in the intersection.
He was starting to annoy me so I eventually merged into the intersection, waited for the lights to turn yellow, red. At that point, the the guy in front of me as well as the inpatient guy behind me turned onto Woodbine.
The guy behind me tailgated onto Woodbine...:complain:complain
So my question is:
1) Should I have waited until the next turn light. thereby pissing off the guy behind me even more, OR
2) Should I have gone drive into the intersection behind the guy already there and wait til the lights turn to turn onto Woodbine.
I have seen too many drivers trying to beat the west bound lights when they turn yellow, red thereby having close calls with the people turning on to Woodbine.
Just want to get your opinion, thx

where is he in a rush to get to if it's rush hour traffic..either way he is going to be late.
i just say follow the rules of the road..those who don't abide by it end up getting into accidents..seen these types of scenarios many times and there is always a conseqence for breaking the law.

I always tell new drivers to do whatever they feel is safe. If you didn't feel it was safe to be in the intersection, you should have stayed back. Who cares about the guy behind you? You'll never see him again... I feel your pain though. People like that just ruin all the fun in driving. :\

geezes.. I say sit there for the next set of lights and piss him off even more.. I can understand if he's complaining about you to himself in his own car but to have the balls to honk at you is just outrageous..

+1.. when people honk at me I just ignore them.. I do what I feel is safe for myself and my passengers.. if I get into an accident then it's on me and not the guy honking at you.. what are you going to tell the cops?? that the guy behind you was honking so you had to move forward thereby causing the accident??
one time I had to turn left onto Finch from a side street at a set of lights. there was already some guy there turning left and we had the red. I didn't have enough room to go around him so I just sat there waiting with my signal on. some stupid cab driver came up behind me and started honking.. I looked up and just sat there.. even if I believed him that I had enough room to get around the first car there was no way I was going to risk getting into an accident because the guy behind me believed I have enough room to go..

I was soo tempted to get out of the car and give him crap for asking him why he was such in a rush...not a good idea.
Well he followed me into the right lane on Woodbine to which I then slowed down to the speed limit (60km). I could tell he was pissed. He then turned off to the TD bank.

I'll just sit there and wait, not to piss him off, but because it is what's right.
Let him honk, who cares. Now if he'll follow you and tailgate just move to the side. Don't look at him in the eye. That's where road rage starts if you look him in the eye.
^That will be my dad's advise. LOL.. I don't follow it as I can be a little cranky sometime. But I try hard to just avoid eye contact sometime, even if it was the other guy's fault or if he's being impatient.
One time I was on ramp from 401 to 404 heading north and this Camry was honking because I was doing the speed limit on the on ramp. He couldn't wait to go on the 404 I guess. I didn't care, I was doing the speed limit. Once I hit 404 I said bye to the Camry.

Yeah, he pulled beside me(middle lane) before I got into the right lane (the first set of lights near the Holiday Inn) and I just looked straight ahead and kept my eye on the light to turn green.

Knowing myself in situations like that I would have given him the middle finger and cussed him out. Then I would have driven on the road at 20km and then slam my brakes just to make sure he's awake. You gotta be an ass to people like that...is that the best approach? Of course not but you can't let people walk all over you...f that especially when you got idiots on the road!

I would have stayed behind the line. There's only suppose to be one car in the intersection when making a left anyway.
And to piss the guy off more.
Whatever mang.

100% agree: when driving if you don't feel safe doing something... don't do it. You need to be 100% confident that lane changes, turns, etc. are safe.
I've had twits honk at me for stopping for a crossing pedestrian while making a turn. I have witnessed a left-turning car get nailed by someone blowing through the amber-just-turned red light.
My mantra while driving: if it is possible for someone to do something stupid/illegal, then someone will do so. And I am too often correct in my predection.
I would have stayed behind the line. There's only suppose to be one car in the intersection when making a left anyway.
HTA reference for that? As far as I know it is perfectly legal to enter an intersection on the green. Once the light turns amber, if you can stop behind the stop line you are obligagted to do so. If you are in the intersection you can complete the turn once the on-coming traffic has cleared.

I thought that if you were in the intersection and the light turns red, aren't you theoretically going thru a red light then?
I'm pretty confident in my driving..its the other asshats on the road I have to watch out for

I don't know what the actual rule is; but i know that the redlight traffic camera's only take pictures of cars that have entered the intersection after the light has turned red. They then decide based on how long you were in the intersection and how fast you were going whether to send you a ticket or not. Now whether they do it that way because it's the way the law is written or whether it is because they wait until the light turns red to take the picture to increase the odds of getting a conviction i'm not sure. I've tried looking through the HTA but it makes my head spin! Especially at night when you've been working all day.

I just about had somebody take off the rear end of my car while backing into a parking spot at Tim Horton's. The entire right hand side of the lot was empty so I backed into a spot, some ******* whizzes by in between the curb and my car as I'm backing up.
People need to understand that an extra 5 to 10 seconds could save them a lot of time, not to mention thousands of dollars.

Technically there should be only one car in the intersection waiting to turn left after the green left signal disappears. However if there is a good car length, you could of gone behind the guy in the intersection and turned with him when it turns yellow then red, and so the guy honking you behind can go also (If he makes it).

I'm not familiar with that intersection so I can't say too much. However, if it was me, I would have just waited until the next turn to be on the safe side.
I agree with other statements of what boils down to "better safe than sorry"...and I too am confident in my own driving. However I remember my first test to go to G2 license. I had something similar. Driving instructor said "when it's safe, turn right here" which was a pretty busy intersection in Oakville during peak time. I was first in line at the light and was waiting for a gap in traffic where I felt it would be safe to merge and an :AH honked at me. The instructor had the never to tell me "you could have gone there" yet I didn't want to risk it. For what? To hit someone? I stand by my choice then even if it was one of the big factors as to why I had to wait to get my G2 at first. I'd rather take my time and be safe when conditions aren't ideal than to get into or cause an accident.

HAHAH he did that? thats too funny.
Drive according to what you are comfortable with. If you leave your comfort zone, that may cause you to drive with bad judgement and cause an accident which will be 100% your fault.
That being said, you (in general, not you specifically) can't drive like a total grandpa / idiot.
STORY: I was in a left turn lane behind 1 vehicle. there was also an OLD LADY standing on the median next to my car waiting to cross the rest of the way.
The way was clear (with an oncoming car waaaaaaay down the road). the driver in front of me did not turn. The old lady hobbled along and made it across the street no problem.... 5 seconds later the oncoming car passes... now THAT was ridiculous.......if an old lady can make it, why can't a car!?

If I'm reading this right...Old lady makes an illegal crossing safely and a car didn't even attempt to turn? Assuming it was legal for the car to? IE didn't have it's own left turn signal that was red? Cause if so, that's pretty funny and I would have honked at that guy :chuckle

To be honest, I dunno how the lady got to standing on that median. but she was already there when I arrived at the turning lane. The light was green in both flows of traffic, so yes, old lady made an illegal crossing, safely.. haha. The car didn't even attempt to turn..... just sat there staring at the green light or something..

I think this is the problem "confidence" both too much of, and a lack of. Both are different but both are equally hazardous to drivers/pedestrians on the road. You see this especially in winter or wet driving conditions. You have the joe hero in his suv doing a buck 40 on the freeway in a blizzard and in the next lane over a guy doing 15 km/h in the same conditions where the likely safe driving speed would have been 60 or 70 km/h

i fully agree with that, drivers with a lack of confidence are just as hazardous as the over confident drivers. probably about 60-70% of the drivers on the road shouldn't have thier license, thats pretty bad.

Over confident drivers are what I tend to see on the road. They tend to weave in and out, try and beat the yellow lights turning red and generally drive faster than what everyone else is going. Whats the rush anyways?

same thing happened with me on steeles and bramalea....but in my case there was a tractor-trailer in my opposite turning lane ..so i couldn't see what was coming through the other lanes and the guy behind me started honking ..i was so pissed i just put my car on 4-way flashing on ..got out and went to him..told him if you can make a f***in plane out of it then flyover me ..but I'm not gonna move my car until that tractor-trailer moves and clears my view and came back to my car..but then he never honked.
