View Full Version : Advanced timing Mod
Im bringing my car into the dealer next week for a ECU update. I was wondering, should i do the ADVANCED timing mod before or after the update or does it not make any difference..
Also, can i just stick with cheapo gas or do i REALLY need to move up a notch?

Advanced timing and you'll have to run 89 now, but I think without a standback/tune it's useless. In my opinion.
Is there a risk i take if i run the cheapo gas, or am i just not going to get the full potential of the mod. I dont think im willing to pay more for gas, i drive alot, and gas is expensive as it is. But, if i can do that mod, and stick with the same gas, id ill definetly do it.Also let me know whether i should wait until after the reflash.
Thanks in advance

The car's current timing is based off the detention of 87, aka car is tuned for 87.
Forgot to mention, if you advanced the timing, our CPU is adaptive meaning it'll just turn the timing back to where it was before.
hmm, well is that the reason why they say uunplug the battery for 10 mins to get it to reset? So from my understanding is that using this mod, using the same cheapo gas causes no harm and no difference:D?

I advanced my timing as far as it would go over a year ago. I didn't reset the ECU and I run 87 octane. No problems, no knocking, everything has been fine for over a year.
The off-idle response and pick up is very slightly better and the car feels slightly less laboured when climbing big hills, like Blue Mountain. The difference in both cases is subtle but enough to notice, definitely not just a placebo effect. But no impact on performance, not like I picked up 10 or 20 hp or something, purely an improvement in responsiveness.
Well, ill be definetly doing this today, ill post up my results. Ill be sticking to 87, if i find any probs ill just put it back to original position. Ill reset the ECU. Either way, i like resetting it, i find it runs much smoother everytime itts reset.

I've done this mod before, for the first few days it does feel like you gained something. But that's probably the butt dyno lol.
I ran 87 most of the time didn't have knocking as they claimed on M3F but I also didn't drive it very hard. There are dyno's on M3F that do show some gain though.
I did it last night. It dont notice a huge difference, but there definetly is a differece when im climbing hills. Car pulls alot stronger. Before, it felt like as if it was sturuggling, now its normal.
Its not bad for a free mod.

I think within a months time, the CPU will learn that it's been modified and retard the timing on you.

^^ It has been reported that this is what happens. If someone wanted to advance timing it's best to get a reflash or FIC.
Sure np, it was a peice of cake... On monday, im scheadualed at the daeler for a update/refalsh for ecu so this is add hopefully a little spice to the ride... Also changing out belts.

FYI, you can void your warranty by changing the sensor position. Read the monster thread on m3f.
No way!? Hmmm, now you got me thinking to swtich it back. Do you really think they will look at that though ? Its something so small, so hidden...
The other thing i noticed was that as i as pushing the plastic peice on the sensor down, i had to HOLD it down, as it felt like a spring always went back up. So, what is the point of having to mark the original spot? Because once i loosen the nuts, it just pops back into original place.

if you're getting the PSI tune, why would you want to do this?

Mine was free sliding once loosened, so not sure. But I had it like that and went into the dealer for service they didn't say anything so I don't think they noticed.
