Does anyone else here work full time and NOT get Family Day off?

Just trying to gauge the numbers here because it seems like everyone else, other than people who work in retail of course, have the day off... my work keeps saying it's "Not a Holiday". I say BS. It IS a holiday, there's just a lot of technicalities behind it. Why create holidays in the first place if you're just gonna be forced to work???? :flaming Annoying...

Not working, but some of my subordinates will be :P

It's a public holiday, but if you perform a task for an operation that is 24/7 or has already stipulated that you're working through those days (probably with in-lieu day, or 1.5x rate), you're SOL :P

What do you mean, so technically you should be getting 1.5 pay rate??? Last year we were able to choose between Family day and Remembrance day. Which was fine, now there's no choice. There has to be some sort of compensation, no? :(

My company gave it to me last year. We'll have to see about it this year as they still haven't told us. I know people who don't get it off because they get Civic holiday off, which isn't technically a statutory holiday.

I read the thread's title and voted for YES ... but I only noticed the question for the Poll afterwards ... DOH!!

Yes, we get Family day off, but before this day came about we used to have 2 floating holidays, but now we're down to 1 floating holiday. I'd rather have had 2 floating holiday and take em both when its nice and warm out. Then again, it'll be nice to get a break in the middle of winter, so I'm not gonna complain ... too much. :)
However if the clients I'm supporting didn't have Family Day off, then I'd have to work it and take another day (of my choice) off.

yaaaa I realized that after hahaha sorry... I was so full of rage I didn't even notice :chuckle jk Maybe mods can change the thread title to match the poll question?

See that's what makes no sense to me, none of our clients will be working. Why even bother keeping us there, no one will be productive and everyone is just gonna sneak out early anyway lol

I see no harm in just letting people use holiday as it was meant to be used and rejuvenate themselves for the next work day.

Family day was created for people who work in public sector basically since they get every single stat or "special" day off.
They are the only ones that truly benefit from it unless you have an employer that is super nice.

Employers in Ontario are only legally obligated to observe 10 stat holidays per year. How they decide to break it up is dependant on them. So some get family day some don't. but in the end, it's 10 days.

I voted yes because of the thread title... I will be getting the day off.

I got one of my floater days taken away and made into Family Day. Some companies are just being A@#$# when it comes to the time off whether or not it is or is not a holiday.

Since I'm an RN I have to work every major holiday (if scheduled) - for example I worked Christmas day in 2009. The nice thing about being a nurse though is we accrue stat days after working one (or working past one) major holiday. Pretty much it's a paid day off to take whenever we want to.

I'm using a whole bunch of my stats right now to get vacation time until the 17th.

Not working, at my company we used to get Flag day which was the last Friday of February but when Family day came out they changed it to make it fair for everybody to spend the same day off with their family members.

I guess technically I should be N/A. I do work part time, and booked the entire reading week off, so I won't be working Family day.

Day off for my company. Don't know about the rest of the construction site, but I also got it as a paid day off last year at the labour company I was working for, and they hate giving anything extra to anybody lol.

i normally get 2 lieu days (usually more when i work on my days off), so i need to use one of them for Family Day. Unfortunately i have no choice in the matter... I would rather work to be honest.

Yup, I'll be reporting to work on Monday, as per usual (federally regulated).

its not a federal holiday so my 34000+ employee Canadian company will not be honoring it because most of Canada will still be working according to HR. I'll be working at straight time/regular pay

It's only an Ontario holiday so any job with a federal regulation will not have it off. Canada Post is one of these.

I worked today... federally-regulated. On the one hand, I had a fantastic commute today... on the other hand, there was some event for children in the complex where my office is located (my office is in the international centre in mississauga)... so when I bailed for coffee after lunch, I came back and my spot was taken by some hooligan in a silver cavalier. Oh well.. can't win 'em all.

Today was a great day to work. Awesome commute. 5 dollar parking where it is normalyl 20 dollar parking. Barely anyone at the office so I can get sorta caught up on my paper work :)
