Any special tips for owning this breed of dog and know of any breeders in the GTA who might have this breed for sale? :)

Thanks in advance!

PS: I've never owned a dog before

cute dog..... for your first dog... better to go with that size of dog... mind you they will yip a lot. My first dog is a lab/shep (that I've owned on my own not a family pet) and it goes through 40$ worth of food + a month lol

Wtom, where'd you get the pictures? That might tip us off on something. I'm looking for a dog for the gf as well, and that breed looks pretty good!

i have a malshi (maltese & shitzu mix). mine had somewhat of a dark brown ears and a patch of brown on her back when she was a pup kinda like the one in the pic. now she's 2.5 years old, the brown patches are very light and she's mostly white

my sister got my pup's brother. and funny thing is you can tell they both have totally different personalities. mine loves to cuddle and play and doesn't bark except to play or if somebody rings the bell while my sister's barks a lot, gets scared easily and is more of a lazy one.

and if that is a malshi, they're easy to care for. mine goes thru a 5.5 lb bag of food in about 3 to 3.5 weeks. loves to play (pending personality) and is very friendly. but like zakman said, they can be sensitive to stuff. mine has allergies (skin) so have to watch what i feed her and to only use puppy shampoo.

Looks very similar to a Norfolk terrier, but it looks to have softer hair.

hahha, cute.. so small though, I'd be afraid of stepping on it :P

When you do find the breed make sure you do A LOT of research. I'm gonna be a little preachy here (lol) but check out the animal shelters nearby first. There's so many beautiful and heartbroken dogs waiting for a good home.

If none of them seem to suit you, make sure you go to a breeder that's associated with the Canadian Kennel Club (http://www.ckc.ca/en/Default.aspx?tabid=100). There are so many people out there that call themselves "breeders" but in reality they're just running a small-scale puppy mill in their homes.

Some tips:
- A true breeder does not breed dogs as their main source of income. Their first priorities are on their dogs' well being.
- A true breeder will likely grill you and ask a lot of questions about yourself to make sure you are a suitable pet owner (again putting the dogs' well being before a sale)
- A true breeder will provide a pedigree for you (the puppy's family tree basically) listing every disease or problem that's been in the family
- True breeders will tell you if the dog ever becomes ill that you are entitled to a replacement puppy or a full refund (none of this 14 day business)

And most importantly,
- A really good breeder will inform you if you should ever change your mind about keeping the pup (god forbid) that you are to return it straight to them and NOT bring it to a shelter.

And that is my animal activist bit for the day :chuckle Good luck with your search! And remember to be patient. It can take years sometimes for a dog to become the perfect pet :)

^ some good advice there.

One thing though, if it's a mixed-breed breeder, they won't be associated with the CKC as mixed breeds don't fit the CKC breed standards.

and, whatever you do, don't buy a puppy from a pet store (http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/2009/how_not_to_buy_a_puppy/main.html)

my sister has a shi-poo (shitz tzu/poodle), and it looks kinda like the one sp3 gt posted, only with less fur.
she's a really good dog, however, she doesnt like to listen. apparently thats normal. i usually persuade her with treats or something.
she has hair, not fur, so she's hypo-allergenic.
really cute, funny, really hyper at times, and she doesnt really bark at all unless im teasing or playing with her.

Small dogs tend to not listen, I have 3 Pomeranians at home and all they do is yap and play.

Cute little dog. Definitely a Shitzu poodle type cross.

For now you can call it a cutesy-poo, but when it soils the carpet you can call it an ah- shitz-poo!

All kidding aside, I have a westie-poo cross that is all of 17 lbs, with the attitude of a 100 lb dog.

YESSSS hahaha... THAT is a fantastic book.

It's all about your body language and the energy you put out... rather than screamin at them all the time :chuckle
