It seems waiting in line at the car wash is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Do you:

A) Turn the car off, starting it only to advance the line a car length or two when the line moves , being a jerk to your starter?

B) Let the car run, wasting gasoline and being a jerk to your engine?

I try not to go when there's a line but sometimes it's unavoidable. Thoughts?

D) Stop being lazy and go to the local Coin-Op and wash it yourself for a fraction of the cost

Would never trust an automatic wash. Plus they never wash as good as doing it yourself.

you know that starting the car over and over again will actually use more gas than if you just let it idle....

I shut the car off and only start it up and move after two cars go through.
And I refuse to line up if there are more than 5 cars ahead of me. (5cars at 5min/car = half an hour of time wasted at staring at the litter.

Coin-Ops are good but I hate having to rush and beat the clock.
I swear to God there is some soap in the high-pressure rinse...just enough to leave a bubbly residue once the time runs out.

Plus I never use the foam brushes at the coin ops....that ish is effin nasty!!!!!!!!

i heard somewhere that if your idling longer than 10 seconds it saves gas to turn the car off.

not really. i remeber watching a thing on CTV and they said idleling for 30secs waste more gas than turning the car on and off 10 times. not to mention idling for long periods of time isnt healty for your motor and somtimes ur waiting in line for 10+ min

can't you just pick another day or time to wash the car? personally, if i see more than a car lined up, i'll go another day.

If i cant make it to my dad's work ( as we have a truck wash there * big cube truck with the water tank and machine in their) coin car wash does it well, Automatic car washes are good, but they do not get the car 100% clean and that bugs me!

+ 1 and I watch the weather forecast, only going to wash it if it is not going to rain or snow in the next 2-3 days.

For people saying shut down the car, so if u just stopped at the red light in a big intersection and u know the green only comes back after 2 min, will you turn off the car too? :P

During chinese new year the line ups are ridiculous, was passing by a sunoco in Scarborough yesterday and the line up filled all the way to the streets.

+1 one what "laksman91" said... i just go to the coin wash place. but if you are ever near derry and dixie tthey have a car wash next to a sunoco thats privately owned, and its only 3 99 for a wash, and there is never any lineups.

I don't know about your car, but my white MS3 doesn't look clean at all after a coin-op unless I probably were to use that filth/rock ridden brush there. I'll wash my car once every 3 weeks in the winter at a Shell gas station. Other than that, all 2 hour hand washes.

You gotta do what my buddy does. Use that Brush and "throw" their soap onto your car without making contact. Think of it as if you're playing lacrosse. Then he whips out his glove and cleans it down. I'm really just concerned about getting salt off when I go in. I know it'll be dirty again the next day.
