LOS ANGELES - Kevin Smith says he's "way fat," but that shouldn't stop him from flying.

The director and actor says a pilot ejected him from a Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland to Burbank, Calif., saying he didn't fit properly in a single seat.

Smith raised a stink about the incident on his Twitter page Sunday, saying "I'm way fat, but I'm not there just yet," and "If you look like me, you may be ejected from Southwest Air."

He posted a picture of himself sitting on the plane with his cheeks puffed out.

Southwest says its "Customer of Size" policy requires that travellers must be able to fit safely and comfortably in one seat or make other arrangements.

After a storm of angry online comments from Smith and his fans, the airline issued an apology first from its own Twitter account and later in a statement on its website titled "Not So Silent Bob," a jovial jab at the Silent Bob character Smith plays in many of his films.

"We would like to echo our tweets and again offer our heartfelt apologies to you," the statement said.

The airline said it also accommodated Smith on a later flight, gave him a $100 voucher and apologized by phone.

Both Smith and the airline acknowledged that he had bought two seats for his original flight from Oakland, where he had spoken at the Macworld Expo conference.

But he was flying standby in order to catch an earlier flight, and only one was available.

Smith insisted that he was still able to put both armrests down and buckle his seat belt, which is Southwest's standard.

Smith is the director of the new Bruce Willis movie "Cop Out," and previously directed the films "Clerks" and "Chasing Amy."

LOL can't say I've heard of ppl getting kicked off planes for being too fat I've heard of them having to buy two seats :chuckle

Fat people are inconvienent in everyway. If you're tired of being discriminated, then do something about it...stop eating.

Why should I have to sit beside a sweaty fat person on my flight? I'm considerate enough to control my eating.

Sorry I don't mean to be harsh or anything but I think the comment is unfair given you don't know the individual.

There are those that are overweight through no fault of their own. To label all people that have weight issues as weak and lacking in self control is over simplifying the problem and ignoring a darker secret. Weight can be brought on by traumatic events. I went to school with a very pretty girl that seemed to have the whole world at her feet. In grade 11 she was raped and the years that followed had her putting on weight. This was her way of coping. She convinced herself that if she was overweight that NO man would ever want to attack her to have sex. Her logic was obviously flawed as her incident had little to do with sex and more to do with power of one individual over another.

Yes the majority of people that are overweight seem to have issues of self control. But you don't know what led them down that path to get there.

Fang, I completely understand where you are coming from. You are correct, everyone has a story. This doesn't only apply to fat people but to homeless, mentally challenged or handicap people.

My comment was only for those who choose not to seek professional help while being fat. It is a disease and they need professional help instead of inconviencing the public.

+1 to that!
there's also a long list of medical conditions (i.e. thyroid gland disorders) that lead to severe weight gain that the person has absolutely no control over.

so as much as i'm pro advocating healthy life styles and eating, i think you should never judge overweight ppl.

I dunno though, is it just me or does he really not look that big? Flight attendant taking their job way too seriously maybe?

Everybody is so politically correct. I certainly understand people who have dealt with "extenuating circumstances" around their obessity, but how about the rest of people who are out of control. Are they going to hide behind these circumstances as well?

Back in the day during my grade school years, when the teacher checks your homework and its not done, they don't care if you were kidnapped the night before and released in the morning. If its not done, you're in trouble. Nowadays, you get sympathy and a "cookie" for not doing your homework.

Some of his movies are hilarious and some of the scene are pretty memorable. lol.

Like Jay when he flashes in public outside the restaurant. That image just gets ingrained into your memory for life. fml.

It's a matter of safety. I'm not going to get into whether fat people should try to lose weight etc, but what the pilot did was correct. The reason airlines make fat people buy 2 seats is more for the weight and balance of the aircraft rather than the person being able to "fit" into a seat. Airlines use an average weight per passenger to calculate the takeoff weight of an aircraft. If someone is overweight, it could throw off the weight and balance of the plane. Instead of jeopardizing the safety of hundreds of people, the pilot chose to inconvenience 1 passenger.

This happens everyday to people, it's only a big stink right now because it's Kevin Smith and he's a celebrity. Oh wells.

In terms of seat sizing though, with the rate that America seems to be... growing... I'm surprised they haven't already begun to make wider seating anyways (unless they have??) We've all heard the stories about people paying for 2 seats because they couldn't fit... blah, it is what it is. Kevin Smith can at least poke fun at himself - dude knows he's fat!!

Lol, fat people inconveniencing the public? What about the many, many people I work with who smoke in enclosed condo units with me working in there? They inconvenience me huge, I get migraines, physically ill, and have trouble breathing around smoke. Do they care or stop? No. Does the person smoking on a busy street corner care about all the people standing around him/her? No. No one cares about anyone else and that's the way it will always be. If someone wants to be fat and smelly, let them. It's MUCH better than smoking around a non-smoker.

bahahaahahh soooo random but the winner for the qoute of the day :) hahahah

I"m a big guy 6'4" 225lbs and aparently I have red hair (display pic) . I find the seats are meant for people who are 5'. I can't stand sitting on a plane for 5+ hours crammed in there caz there isn't any first class or seats with leg room. I guess planes just fail all around if your not the right height and size. .... I want a tall person plane.... or stick me in storage as long as my legs can move more than an inch and my knees aren't RAMMED into the person in front of me.
