View Full Version : iPhone users are data hogs

Filthy Apple swine, hogging up all the bandwidth.

Don't blame me: I'm just the messenger. It's pretty much what Consumer Reports has to say about all of us iPhone-toting goons, noting that a study it has commissioned shows that iPhone users are gobbling up bandwidth to a far greater degree than other smartphone users.

Specifically, the average iPhone user sucks down 273MB of data each month. That's nearly double the amount that most smartphone users take in (150MB) and a whopping five times that of the average BlackBerry user (a paltry 54MB).

What's going on?

Consumer Reports doesn't analyze the data to offer any reasons why this effect might be happening, but it's likely that iPhone users just like to use their phones more than other smartphone users do. The iPhone's top-notch web browser is probably one culprit, as is the surfeit of data-enabled applications that have iPhone regulars jabbing digits at their handsets.

Don't go thinking this is a case of a few heavy business users mucking the study. The data include only consumer-level users, and it also excludes people who tether their phone to a computer (difficult or impossible to do with many handsets) to use as a network connection for a second device. These are straight-up average-guy-or-gal usage numbers.

You kids and your fancy devices that gobble up precious services that the rest of us have to subsidise with higher than normal cell-phone service rates. It makes me sick! You guys want it all too quickly and aren't willing to pay for it! :chuckle

I have half a mind (the other half isn't paid for yet) to get my cell phone out and hit you rug-rats over the head with it for complaining.

As stated in the article, pretty much every iPhone app is data heavy. Blackberries on the other hand have extremely good compression which is why they use less data.

I sit in the middle with a google phone. 500mb / month is more than enough for the average joe really.

I've used up 640MB in three weeks this month. I'm still getting raped, I have 6GB of data that needs to be put to use.

^^lol true enough hahaha curious what the average windows mobile user runs a month ... but over all I'm thinking for sure most 3g users with Iphones use the most data

Gizzmo_jr is that Wifi data ... thought you didn't have a high data plan

It's hard to rack up a large data bill on a windows mobile phone... The battery keeps dying. ;)

But yeah, as others have mentioned, Blackberrys compress all data and the iPhone browser is top notch, which is why more people use it. On previous phones, I would only use my mobile browser as a last resort...

Plus iPhones integrate the App store and Music store, so you're encouraged to use more data.....

I'm $30 for 6 GB... Just make sure you get the 6 GB data plan when they offer it. They tend to offer it whenever a new iPhone comes out. I technically get it free, cause I complained a long time ago about their high data rates and they gave me a $30 credit per month. =) They just forgot to take it off...

I barely use any. Less than 300MB/mth. My data plan is only for 500MB anyway. I'm on more wifi than anything else.

I would use more data if my blackberry's browser didn't suck. I love blackberry don't get me wrong but I really wish they had an option to have a better browser. ALso I find it slow as hell when browsing, what gives?! (srry i know this is an iphone thread LOL)
