View Full Version : Oil Smells Like Gas?
Hello,
I was checking my oil today after I got home from work and smelt it, and it smells like gasoline. Is this normal? What can be the cause of this? And what's the fix?
I drive around 90-80 % highway. At least 20min each trip from work to home, so I don't think it has to with engine not warming up and burning things off. I have a 2010 3 GX, 8500km on it. And I don't try it hard.
Thanks in advance

Flooding. Not warming your car up properly before driving off on a cold morning, as it runs rich. Improper break in, faulty fuel delivery, spark, etc could all cause it.

Usually in the morning I just drive slowly until the engine is warmed up, never accelerating hard or rev the engine at all. So I don't think it would be the cause? Even on the highway when I get off work I don't accelerate hard or rev the engine until it's warmed up...
As for break in.. I didn't rev it at all or anything. i didn't do a trip to London shortly after I picked up the car... but other than that, followed everything in the manual. I also got my oil changed at 6500km.
I guess I should take it in to get it looked at

Can be as the gas takes the lube out of the oil. I just smelled mine for agruments sake, and although it doesn't smell like gas, you could say there is a faint gas-like smell to it. I'm at 19800kms on my and haven't had any issues. Maybe our cars have a crappy fuel system that is full of leaks. I guess it would be worth asking a Mazda guy about. My mechanic that I got to is a Mitsubishi/Hyundai mechanic and he is with me on the idea of it just being the nature of the car if this many people are claiming it.
Faint smell.. hmm... mine reeks of it , especailly if you open the oil cap at the top!!
Anyhow, I am taking it in after work just to see what they say. Will you guys know what they say about it..

I am sure they will be lazy and say it's normal. But keep us posted, don't really want to go get new piston rings any time soon.
Apparently it's normal.... it's a problem if there's black smoke or the engine is very rough or if you have problems starting the car....the guy said the fuel is sprayed inside.. but fuel is sprayed inside the crankcase!??!? I thought the fuel is injected into the cylinders directly!? hmmm

lol... next time you change your oil they're just gonna fill up a jerry can and re-fuel their own cars.

certain brands and types of oil are susceptible to fuel dilution... switching to a different brand or viscosity could solve the problem
I run castrol syntec 0W30 and don't have this problem... keep in mind that some fuel dilution is expected and is normal for a gasoline engine... diesel engines don't have this problem

changed my oil, 5 W 20, no smell of gas, if there is any presence it is very very faint, all I smell is the oil.

hmmm I am using the original Mazda stuff. Don't know what it is. Might change brand on my next oil change.
