I'm already at 40k and Richard at Street Performance was suggesting I do a transmission flush at 50K as they usually get dirty around that time. Is there a difference in using OEM transmission fluid or should I go with something else on an auto? YES I searched and found nothing.

You can use the OEM stuff or you can go synthetic. I used Mobil1 synthetic on my first change, two years ago and will be using it again this year.

My question is...is StreetPerformance going to change the ATF filter out as well as part of the flush?

Good question I never asked as I didn't think of it until he brought it up. I am thinking of going Synthetic. Amsoil most likely but I don't know which one to choose.

the transmission does have a filter but it doesn't need to be changed as often as the fluid. if i were you i would leave it for the next trans flush. pretty sure if you already got a quote from street performance he was quoting for just the fluid change, changing the filter would probably cost more.

Looks like if you want to change the ATF filter, you'll need to drop the oil pan which makes this a much more involved task.

TheMAN: Do you know if dealerships do this as part of the ATF Flush service?

i had a quick drain/fill done at jimmys last week...I didn't switch to synthetic because it was just a drain/fill. I think you can wait on the filter change, maybe till 100K?

Just bought 8 x 1L bottles of Mobil1 Synthetic ATF from Canadian Tire. Today only, they are giving away a Gift Card for $10 for every $40 spent. Now I need to get the OEM ATF filter from Joe and head over to Jimmy's.

I've been running Mobil1 synthetic ATF for about 3 years now (dealership serviced). No issues whatsoever which why I'm going back with it.

Did some research and it says Mobil1 is good for Mazda ATF-III, ATF-MV. What does that mean?

those are just standards that are set by Mazda for their transmissions.

Thanks for clarifying! I confirmed that we use ATF-MV so I need to look for tranny fluid with that standard!

ATF MV is just mercron 5, or you can use multi vehicle, its kinda pointless to change the oil without the filter...i mean....would you change your motor oil with changing the filter?.....wouldnt make much sense all the dirt is still there.

Why change trans. oil without changing the filter?

Basically, there are two methods:

1) Pan Drop: Drain & replace the oil and replace the filter (only 2/3 oil can be drained out)

or

2) Flash: Flush and replace 100% oil using a machine. Filter will not be replaced

You could do the method 1 for the first oil change and method 2 for the second.

I believe pan drop is cheaper than the flush.

Your mean this Mobil multi-vehicle ATF Synthetic blend - http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/3/AutoFluidsChemicals/TransmissionFluidTreatments/PRDOVR~0289430P/Mobil%252B1%252BSynthetic%252BAutomatic%252BTransm ission%252BFluid.jsp

No. The synthetic blend just came out a year ago. I'm using the Mobil1 ATF Synthetic ($9.99/bottle). I've been running it for 3 years now, no issues so I'm going to stick with it.

accoring to the dealer it is the right fluid to use. said ATF multi-vehicle (type M5) could be substituted for ATF M-V.

not if it's requested.... flushing is a waste of money anyway if you maintained your car well (like 50k ATF changes)... just drain and fill is fine and I never have seen trannys goes bad just from a properly scheduled drain and fill

I only recommend flushes if you're switching to synthetic

What is the different between flush, drain and fill??
I know what it mean drain and fill but flush, I really don't know

Never mind. I google it and found the answer. Here is the article from another website.

Question: Transmission Flushing
I noticed you didn't advise on flushing the transmission. We flush 8 hours a day and have never had a problem. Snap-On only puts in the same amount of pressure that the transmission puts out. Drop the pan, clean it and add a new filter. Snap-On guarantees its pump not to damage or they will pay for repairs.

Had Ford Explorers going 250,000 miles without a problem and are still going right now.

Love your website.

Answer:
The Snap-On machine is not a flush machine; it is a fluid exchanger. All it does is push out the old fluid. A flush machine uses high pressure and cleaning agents and forces it in the reverse direction of the normal fluid flow.

This is something Ford Motor Company specifically advises against. In big letters in the Ford transmission service manuals it says "Warning: Use only clean automatic transmission fluid. Do not use any supplemental transmission fluid additives, treatments or cleaning agents. The use of these materials affects the operation of the transmission, resulting in internal component failure."

It is not necessary to use a special machine to do the job correctly. Just drop the pan and pull the drain plug on the torque converter. While it's draining, drop the transmission filter, put in a new one and clean the pan. Put a new gasket on the transmission pan and button it back up. Put the drain plug back into the torque converter and fill up the transmission.

This method will get 95% of the transmission fluid out with wasting time hooking up a machine you don't need. Then you can use the money for that machine on equipment you do need.

The facts are this:

1.The only ones who recommend a transmission, or engine, flush as a maintenance service are the people who make the machines and the people who sell the service.
2.No automotive manufacturer in the world recommends a flush as regular service. If a shop tells you they do; they are outright lying to you.
3.All automotive manufacturers specifically recommend against flushing services. Doing so will void new vehicle warranties.
4.A transmission, or engine, that has been regularly serviced does not need a flush.
5.Flush machine manufacturers specifically advise against flushing "high mileage" vehicles. This loosely phrased warning puts the complete burden of the cost of repairs to components damaged by a flushing service on the shop and leaves them libel free.
So whenever a shop says you need a transmission, or engine, flush; just say no.

No AT filter swap. Jimmy isn't comfortable with dropping the AT pan and swapping the filter. I had my suspension installed as well so I got a package price. I think it was $40 to $50 for the ATF flush tho.

I think about 7 1/2 bottles to fill up. If you don't see it at CT then you can go to Partsource which have the same price $9.99/bottle. I have a coupon for $10 off for $35 purchase before tax which expire Mar 31. If you want it then PM me with you email then I will send it to you. I did bought 4 bottles for $35.37 then came back for another 4. Save $20.

It will answer any/all questions about how to flush your own system in your driveway. Changing filter as well. I did it yesterday in a couple of hours.

any gain or just a brand comfort if you switch to synthetic ATF? I know for manual tranny's it is probably more effective since you are constantly moving the gears. I'm strapped in choosing Amsoil VS. Mobil 1

I think either one will be good for your auto tranny, just a personal preferrence.
