And this ladies and gentlemen is the reason you're supposed to hit the damn thing...unless it's a deer/bear/moose/other large animal. If its below the hood, cream the sucker. Better to hit it then wind up in the ditch.

Thankfully no one was hurt. That's the important thing.

**** man. Same story for me. Driving home last night on the Red Hill Expressway swerved to avoid a huge ass raccoon. I spun out, did a 360 then went into a ditch where I did a 180. I thought the car was ****ed because driving over 70km the wheel was vibrating like crazy. This morning took it to the coin op washed everything off. Mazda okayed it. The car is fine.

Glad to hear you're okay. If my car made it out I think yours will be okay too.

so sorry to hear about your accidents, but luckily you guys are ok, 2 years ago I was in the exact same accident as the two of you..except I was goin around 90-100 and I swerved to avoid what seemed like a big box but it was a raccoon! I hit it but I also spun out and flipped my car upside down in a 6 ft ditch. Luckily I was able to get out the back window in one piece with just cuts. My 8 month old 3 was totalled but I was luckily ok, its kind of hard to resist your reflex to avoid things on the road like that. Hope everything goes ok guys!

Hopefully you're alright. At least you weren't intoxicated or anything. If it's a small animal, don't hesitate to run it over...I remember when I first got my G2 in my old civic I was going about 120 on backroads then all of a sudden, in a really foggy area too, a rabbit just jumped out infront of the car. I then proceeded to run over the poor thing. My g/f who was in the car at the time started to give me shit that she couldn't believe i hit an animal & don't feel remorse etc...I just turnedd to her and said "would you rather me swerve and both of us die? the rabbit would've been okay though!" & she shut up pretty quick.

Glad mk you okay as well.

In hindsight yah I should have mowed it down. Guess when my passenger pointed it out I was startled and swerved around it. thought we are okay but I began to lose the back. Allstate has been pretty good... And I'm glad I have a bunch of friends up here this weekend to come rescue us. If it wasn't for them I dunno what I would do.

Pictures will come tomorrow when I get back to Toronto (I'm thinking it might not be too bad). Just the bumpers and suspension maybe. In the meantime they have provided me with a list of shops to take it to. Any recommendations?

sucks that your car ended up in a ditch but at least you and your passengers are ok.

doesn't it say in the owner's manual (or is it the shop manual) that the "tow hook" in the front is not to be used to tow the car but, rather, it is a tie-down for transport?!

really sucks man. looks like mostly body damage from what we can see. just like when i took the ditch few weeks ago, at least everyone is allright and thats whats important.

insurance covered mine cause i didnt have 5 grand to dish out on this. they painted the whole car except the hood and the roof, new bumpers and new trunk lid and also exhaust.

and i didnt know the tow hook was only for tie down, ive used it once to get unstuck, although i just had the passenger wheel in the snow and guess what wheel was turning. had to get out somehow.

Front lip damage was caused by the tow trucks. My car looked perfectly fine from the front side. I also told them about the tow hook but they insisted. I think they were also pulling it up by the tire/rim.

I just got a call from the bodyshop and it looks like it is only soft damage considering I landed in mud/water at the bottom.

stay tuned.

Hey all. Sorry to hear about your crashes. I totalled my car in Jan. Some idiot ran a stop sign and I T-Boned him doing 60k.
We spun counterclockwise about 145 degrees. Ouch. Amazingly... my fiance and I walked away from the crash. A little physio and some rest and we're okay now. The other driver got pretty beat up cuz I hit him right on his driver side door. He was driving a Saturn, so the thing fell apart. I think he just had a broken arm though. Stupid idiot.
Insurance was really good to me. I'm already driving a brand new 2010 Mazda 3! We figured that we walked away from one... why not get another!!

Ouch for all the accidents mentioned in this thread. Its insane how many Mazda's end up in accidents looking at all these pictures, the best part is, at least we know these cars are safe and can handle tough situations.

As long as everyone inside the cars involved walked away with no major injuries then its all good, cars are sheet of metal, you are flesh and bones....good luck with your situation ZeroChalk!

Speaking of animals jumping on highways/roads, I met the driver of this car at work 2 weeks after the accident (he had a busted lip, broken legs, arms and he looked like he was beat up at a school playground..)

http://www.northumberlandtoday.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2561002

Him and his friend were in that ditch for 6 hours before he was able to pull himself out of the wreckage and walk onto the 401, no one would stop to help him for about 15 minutes...unbelievable.

As he told me the day I met him, the OPP told him, "Next time, just hit the damn thing and you'll be fine."

Exactly, unless you are about to hit something like a moose, DO NOT swerve. Swerving will likely cause more issues (flipping your car, running off the ditch, causing others to crash as well, etc...) than just directly hitting the animal.

Speaking of accidents though, a buddy of mine bought a used Mazda 3 yesterday. On his drive home, he was going straight through an intersection and a girl coming the opposite direction decided to make a quick left hand turn. The two had a head on collision and completely totalled his new car. He was alright, but that is such shitty luck.

Ouch! I hope he gets at least what he paid for it. I guess that car wasn't meant to be. As long as he is OK and it wasn't his fault :).

Also, I believe if you hit the animal the accident is not deemed an at fault, but if you swerve and sustain damage then it is considered at fault. Someone correct me if I am wrong...

Correct. If you hit it, comprehensive insurance and not at fault. If you swerve, hit something/someone else it's collision insurance and deemed at fault.

Been there, done that.

Yup. Hitting the animal is covered under comprehensive. Swerving and smacking up your car comes under "loss of control of vehicle" and counts as accident when determining your rate.

Its sad how driving schools do not teach you all this, hence the amount of bad drivers on the road. It blows my mind how most people slam their brakes when trying to avoid a collision instead of trying to avoid it by looking for a way out.

Young Drivers seems to get a bad rap when it comes to driving schools, but they actually take the time to teach you how to deal with these emergency situations. Yeah it's an expensive program, but they teach some good things that most driving schools do not even bother to mention.

Not swerving when an animal is running across the road is one of the things my instructor taught me. It's pretty sad that most people do not know that until after their first incident. Then they find out they are at fault for the damage just because they didn't want to hit a squirrel or whatever.

driving schools teach you the bare minimum when it comes to driving and really only what is required to pass the G2 and G tests. you don't even need to take a driving school to pass the tests.

something like Ian Law's Car Control School (http://www.carcontrolschool.com) will teach you proper collision avoidance and exit maneuvers in a controlled environment (and not just to brace yourself). any type of advanced driver training is a worthwhile investment over spending big money on an expensive "driving" school.

In the article that was referenced he was trying to avoid a deer so I think he was justified in trying to avoid it. It's higher than your hood.

Yes Young Drivers does teach you some good tips (some unreasonable, like leave a 2 car gap at the traffic light and slowly creep up when traffic comes from behind). I think it is natural to try and avoid it - plus sometimes you react defensively to protect your car.
