Lovely. Rented a car for the weekend and got home pretty late last night. I walk out to my driveway this morning to return it, and find long scratches from back to front along both sides of the car :flaming Definitely looks as if it's been keyed. fffffffffkkkkkkkkkk, I have NO idea when this happened....
And figures, I didn't take their insurance because it would have been an extra $80 (which is more than the cost of the rental), but my insurance company covers me for rentals anyway.
When I brought it back they didn't say anything to me, they definitely saw the scratches but only charged me the rental fees.
Can they come back to me now and make my pay for this? Or am I safe as they did not bring it to my attention upon return?

If i'm not mistaken they sign off on it, and if they let you leave without paying they can't come back to you for cosmetic reasons. Engine problems is a different story. I'm sure there's something in the fine print to screw you over somehow.

Did you read the fine print before you signed off the rental saying they would? I know there are stupid clause's such as "the owner shall be responsibile for ALL fees and authorizes 'car company' to charge any misc fees invovled"

Keep the sign off sheet and if they gave you one, the inspection sheet, where all items are listed as before rental and after, if you have this and the scratch is not indicated, they cannot charge you for this, as you can always argue that it happened after you returned that car.

Actually they didn't give me any sign off sheet... they only gave me a receipt for the amount charged to my credit card.... bad?
And yeah I'm sure there are a lot of things that will screw me over in the fine print :bang

I've never rented a car before but i couldn't see them coming after you for a scratch...do they not do a circle check when returning the car??

More than a scratch, it was keyed so some parts of it went through the paint. And they were long, like across 3 panels on each side :(
Who does that???? How do you wake up in the morning and say to yourself, "I think I'll key a car today!" :complain
I'm hoping I get lucky somehow and they just let it go... but knowing my luck that won't be happening haha

they will probably come back and charge you. my friend bent a wheel and returned it and he still got charge for it a couple of months after, go figure.

Brutal situation. I agree, don't know why someone would do such an act.

Yeah it must have... either at a rest stop on the highway or at my place... although all the other cars in my driveway including my own were fine, so it had to have been at a rest stop...

ughhh haha yeah I guess. Still goes on my insurance though. Comprehensive which won't do anything to my premiums, but it still looks bad :(

maybe you did something to the other person who keyed your car.
for example: not signalling to go into another lane and then braking hard to turn into a street -_-

LOL just checking, cuz that happened to me =[ good thing, i didnt rear end, it woulda been my fault -_- we were BOTH turning on the same street so i was on the right lane.
anyways, that sucks, hopefully they wont get back at you with any charges.
if they do, then i think it would be unfair because if they didnt charge the scratches up front.
then what if the scratches were never there in the first place, and someone couldve done it after you surrendered the car, it wont make sense for them to charge you.

Ash... you'll get a bill from the rental agency. Did you use a Gold or Platinum MasterCard or Visa when renting the vehicle?
