Ok so whenever i start my car and the temp is anywhere from -2 to +7 degrees....give or take a degree. my engine just squeels and hisses. And it continues while i drive and usually doesn't stop until the engine is really warm, it takes a long while to go away.

and if i take it to the dealer, the noise never shows itself while its there.

everything in my mind tells me its something to do with belts or a pulley or something....

anyway else have this problem or know what it is.

thx

you can check the Timing-belt and / or tensioner. Usually needs replacing around 100-120k
just hope it's not the flux capaciter. That's a PITA to fix

Open the hood and listen to the belts to see if its coming from there. Sometimes the belts have moisture on them and the moisture makes the hissing noise. and then the belts dry (car heats up) and the noise stops. its normal happens to me sometimes in the morning

This is a known issue that plagues many of us. There is really not much to worry about. If it makes you feel better you can change the belt tensioner and belts; this has resolved the sound for some. I've had this sound for close to 5 years now. I changed the belt tensioner but it didn't make a difference; I'll be changing belts this week as part of my maintenance so I'll let you know if it makes any difference.

Happens to me also during raining days.

Just a quick update. I don't know if you guys in the GTA had any hissing yesterday or today, but the conditions have been just right for it. I'm happy to report that for the past 2 days I have not had any hissing noise. I had my belts changed on Monday night and this (so far) seems to have resolved the issue. I also had the tensioner replaced last fall but I still had hissing.

BTW, knock on wood, I've never had any squealing.

LOL! When I said 'had my belts changed' I should have more accurately stated that 'Jimmy changed my belts'.

I changed the tensioner first and it didn't help (and I paid a good chunk of cash for it). After changing the belts everything is irie. My suggestion is if you can afford it change the belts and tensioner at the same time (will be cheaper on labour too). If you could only do one or the other I'd suggest starting with the belts (cheaper parts). If your tensioner is shot then definitely change it.

thanks for the help and update guys, nice to know im not the only one......it's quite an embarrassing noise though i must say. I always expect to hear noises like ours to be coming from a 1987 oldsmobile cutless..... or something similar :)

I found this (http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=163197.0) on m3f. No pics, but it walks you through changing your belts.

I've just started to get a "wish wish wish" sound which only seems to be partially based on RPM (It speeds up and slows down a little bit, but generally stays the same. I think it could be the AC Unit (which is loud as hell when it engages as it is...)

I can hear the "wish wish wish" Sound for the first 10k... but I park underground.... Is this the same issue? Am I correct that there is 2 belts? 1 for Coolant/alternator/power steering and the other for A/C?

Hrmmm... Still on topic, if it is a belt, is there some sort of lubercant that is safe to use on the belts?

My brothers old Mazda pickup (1991) he used a piece of wax on the belt while it was running. Had to do this once every 500km or so to get rid of the squeal... but the truck had 380,000km. He called it his "mazsarati" because it was mazda, and rotting away.

When serpentine (wide flat ones) start to squeel or make noise. It's a good indication they need replaced before they fail. There is a product out there called "belt dressing" which you can find at Canadian tire. However, I would not recomend this for serpentine belts. It cures the squeel for a little while, but then it will squeel worse. The belt dressing is more for the old style v-belts.

Jimmy @ Street Performance, he is the mechanic guru around here. As for belts, give Joe (Flipdady) at Mazda of Toronto a shout. If not, I'm sure you can get it from any dealership or automotive store.
