Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend where I'd be able to get my hands on a Grom / Sylfex / or anything else which would allow me to hook up my ipod to the stock audio system via 3.5mm and/or iPod cable

Thanks

You can buy the accessory connection for the iPod from any dealership. This uses the standard iPod dock interface, and disables the iPod controls while the engine is running. The steering wheel controls do still work, but the inteface is somewhat clunky when switching between playlists. Alternatively you can search ebay for various kits, or if you're willing to put up with a bit of interference (particularly near radio broadcast stations..) you can invest in an FM transmitter for your iPod, which doesn't require taking apart your dash to install.

Which accessory disables the ipod controls.
the only adaptor i've seen for an ipod is the one that goes in the cigarette lighter

There's definitely other ones man, those are the shit FM transmitters that you get really really sick of after awhile because their quality sucks. There's factory options, but what I'd recommend is asking someone who's already got an iPod adapter hooked up through their ashtray or something, maybe see where they got it and for how much. Make sure to get something that'll still allow you to use your SW volume controls with the connection hooked up.

For safety reasons, the actual Mazda Genuine Accessory disables the ipod controls. It plugs into the back of the head unit (into the aux connector IIRC) and you can run the cable more or less where you want. Mazda recommends you install it in the glovebox, but this requires drilling a hole to route the cable. I have mine installed differently - no drilling required.

The FM ones aren't bad as long as you can find an unused frequency. Good luck with that in Toronto. As for the volume controls, the iPod Genuine Accessory thing uses the dock connector for output, not the headphone jack, so the built-in volume controls do nothing to the output; volume is controlled entirely by the usual vehicle controls. My steering wheel works fine with the normal controls on both the head unit and the steering wheel.

You don't have to drill into the glove box if I remember. On the 05 mazdas there is a plastic flap at the back of the glove box you can just push out.

I had an FM transmitter and I've never found a clear frequency anywhere in Southern Ontario. It's now in a drawer. I'll give to anyone who wants it for free. The problem is that the Mazda3 gets great radio reception, so it pics up stations from everywhere!
