View Full Version : Passenger Motor Mount: Options and Opinions?

So...my PMM is shot and I need to replace. Thankfully I have an ETD installed so it's basically doing the job of the ETD and the PMM and it's doing it quite well so far, but I do need to replace the PMM and was wondering what my options are.

Excluding Medieval (obviously), the 3 brands other than an OEM mount that I have found that make the PMM are:

AWR
Street Unit (SU)
Top Speed

If I recall correctly, the SU units had reliability issues and on their site I can only seem to find the PMM as part of a package and not individually.

My big question here is does anyone have any of these 3 (or another brand if someone else makes a PMM for the MZ3) installed and how well does it perform? How much did it cost (OEM is around $70 from Joe I believe)?

Also....will I still be able to mount my ETD to these mounts? I do not want to spend the money on a PMM only to discover that I can't use the ETD I just bought anymore.

Any tips/advice/insight is greatly appreciated!

PS - I did search the forum quite extensively and I couldn't quite find what I was looking for and there were many dead links to the Mazdaspeed forums.

You're building up your mm collection, no? I believe you have dibs on the TRZ tranny mount that RUNUOVR is selling? If this is the case, and you have ETD and AM rear MM you are going to be fine with another OEM mount. Is your mount the one that originally came with the car? If so, what year is it?

It is possible, even with an ETD, to tear another OEM mount, however, even if you had to purchase 2 OEM mounts it would still be cheaper that buying one of the AM options (with the exception of Top Speed's mount).

I replaced my 04 one with another stock unit from the dealership.

Has been working great. No vibration issues. Etc.

I like stock sometimes.

That I am indeed. It wasn't the plan but that's what's ending up happening. I will be getting the TRZ Tranny Mount from RUNUOVR and I already have the SU RMM and NRG ETD installed on the car.
As far as I know the mount is the one that originally came on the car and my car is an '06.
The mount was broken before the ETD went on, but the ETD+RMM has almost entirely alleviated the problems I was having because of the broken mount.

I know that the other options are a lot more expensive, but I'd rather buy one of those and know that it *should* pretty much last the lifetime of the car and give me better performance than buy an OEM mount. That is as long as it's not like 5 times as expensive. And I also have to be able to mount my ETD to it, although that shouldn't be an issue because the ETD and the PMM have to mount to the same point on the engine.

Do you have any experience with any of these PMMs?

Also, how much was your PTP Kicker Mount and where'd you get it? Depending on how much the PMM options cost, I might just get an OEM PMM and pick up the PTP Kicker for the same money or less.

question: how to youu know your motor mount is shot?

It is a fluid filled motor mount and the fluid from the mount is leaking everywhere and the metal of the mount itself is completely sheared. And if you had driven my car before I put in the RMM and ETD last weekend, the engine had extra movement in it and it would squeak and creak anytime it moved.

My car already has a fair bit of vibration from the RMM and the ETD, but I love the sound I get and the extra performance is noticeable. I'm not against OEM, but if there is a reasonably priced aftermarket alternative, I may as well go for it if it's not too expensive.

I don't have experience with any of those AM PMM's, however, I looked into them when I was deciding which mounts I wanted to get. I have an 05 and had the OEM mount replaced under the TSB because it failed. When choosing my mounts I decided to leave the PMM OEM because I was going to add an additional mount to that side of the engine. Either of these options (ETD at the top or Kicker at the bottom) will help reinforce engine support on that side, so I believe the OEM should be sufficient. If you were only going to rock 3 mounts then upgrading the PMM might be a good idea depending on what you want from your car.

I bought the Kicker from PTP's website (google PT Performance). I believe it was around $150 +/-. Cost-wise, if you get the PTP and an OEM PMM you're probably looking at a similar price to an AM PMM.

As I mentioned, my car is an '06 but it is over 100k already (118k approx.) so would I still be able to get it replaced?

What do you think would be better in terms of performance - Stock PMM + PTP Kicker + ETD, or AM PMM + ETD? (This is taking into account the RMM already in place and the Tranny Mount that I will be getting installed).

I want the best overall performance but I really don't have the money to be spending or I'd just do it all. The thing is, if I have to get the PMM replaced anyways, I might as well spend a little extra and get it done the way I want it.

What are all the mounts you have again? TRZ Tranny, PTP Kicker, ___ RMM, OEM PMM?

I use AWR and nothing else. These mounts are mint. If you want the best performance and don't mind paying for it, go for AWR. I have the softest durometer and it's still really good.

Yah, they seem to make quality products. I'd prefer not to go with SU as I know they had issues in the past and I think that they're also more expensive.

If I were to go with AWR I'd get the highest durometer since NVH doesn't matter to me as long as I can still drive the car. (AWR has 70, 88, and 95 durometer rated PMMs).

Can anyone just verify for me that my ETD should still mount fine? That is my biggest concern with an aftermarket PMM. I suppose getting a kicker and OEM PMM would alleviate that problem if it is a problem.

You should be fine with ETD + Kicker + OEM PMM. with the ETD and the Kicker, your engine isn't going anywhere. The Kicker was designed by PTP to work in conjunction with the PMM; PTP was going to make a stiffer PMM but decided on the Kicker instead as it "boxes" the engine in to the chassis (mounted to 4 points rather than 3) -- in effect, working better than just a stiffer PMM.

If you get the OEM PMM, you can follow the steps here (http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f33/stiffen-your-passenger-motor-mount-diy-12293/) to shim the PMM to stiffen it up. The link is for an MS3 but the concept can also be applied to the MZ3 OEM PMM.

TRZ Tranny, PTP Kicker, CPE RMM, OEM PMM.

I don't know what the likelihood of you getting your PMM replaced under TSB/warranty is. Like Majestic stated, your engine isn't likely to move much with an ETD and Kicker.

Thanks Neil! I'll have to make a piece like that in the student machine shop before the term ends. Hopefully it'll work well!

Jason....I guess this means I'll be one step ahead of you (ETD) once I get the Kicker, eh? Will we be the ones with the most mounts done?

So...PTP Kicker + OEM PMM it is.

Once all this is done I'll have:

SU RMM
TRZ Tranny
PTP Kicker
NRG ETD
OEM PMM

Nothing is the same brand, haha.
