I don't get it. Tablet PC's aren't a new thing. Yet people are going on about how this new Apple device will change the world! :bang

I've never been a fan of tablet's. They come off to me as horribly impractical and quite fragile. The IPad doesn't even have USB ports so it's not even suitable as a pseudo laptop.

So what do you all think? Marketing gimmick or will this thing really change the world?

Aside from all of the extra applications that are available the IPAD is something to compete with the KINDLE book reading tablet. That's my take on it. I don't think Apple was thinking laptop at all when they released it. The extra applications make it more appealing than the KINDLE

I think the iPhone's touch interface was revolutionary when it came out.. but that was a while ago (3 years or so?). This is a slick-looking device, but it looks like a giant iPod Touch to me (although admittedly I haven't looked at it in-depth).

If i remember correctly the 16 GB IPAD is going to retail for $499.99 plus if you wanted the wireless and 3G its $629. The kindle retails for 259.99 on amazon and comes with the wireless feature. To me, this is in fact their version of an interactive laptop tablet. Unleash the power of the app store will a full touch screen keyboard, email, web browsing, photos, music, videos, and this screams computer to me. I mean what do you use your computer for at home? anything other than what i listed? lol

It's probably a last minute fill-in idea to satiate the raving/salivating/frothing apple fanboys before something really worth money is released (fingers crossed, iphone g4). You have to keep harvesting money from them or else they lose interest in your company. Isn't that right Optik? :chuckle

IIRC, there are 2 versions of the Kindle, the DX version actually retails for $489. If was in the market for a ebook reader for $10 extra I'd get the iPad, no brainer, it does so much more.

This is definitely for a niche market, not everyone will want one, I think its going to compete against the Kindle, and a few net books as well perhaps, although strangely enough amazon has a Kindle app for the iPad, so it will be interesting to see whether amazon's ebook sales or apples ebook sales triumph.

I was recently looking at LCD Picture frames, more specifically the 10" Sony as it has one of the nicest screens I have seen to date. It is also very clean looking. This was $300 and it pretty much only displays photos. An iPad for $200 more will do this, as well as many, many more things. I think if I was ever to pull the trigger on picture frame like this I would pony up the extra little bit of cash and grab an iPad. A Picture frame that you can check what time movies are playing, be your music source for your home theatre etc.

Definitely a toy for my use, but I think we will start seeing these being put into use in many industries as well. I would think hospitals could find a great use for these with the right software and database setup.

Not for everyone, but I think it will do well.

Well, vie had my ipad for a few days now... And I'm totally impressed, the screen is outstanding, the apps are great. Typing is way better than I expected.

Only real thing I'm thinking now is, if there isn't a way to tether to my iphone by the time the 3G one comes out, I will sell this one and buy that one.

^^^^ Believe me, i've been watching those crop up. Not everyone is paid as much as you are, so I'll probably have to get a knock-off. Unfortunately, the battery life on these are somewhere between 1-3 hours at most and the performance on them isn't that great (stuttering, etc.)

I'm in the same situation...I now want to buy an iPad. With all of the meetings that I have been going to lately I see how I can take advantage of using an iPad instead of lugging around my MBP.

My question is, which carrier should I go with? Bell or Rogers or Telus? My iPhone is with Rogers, if that makes any difference.

As far as I was told when i was shopping for data for the ipad ... you can keep going as much as you want. They aren't gonna stop you. You just pay the overage fine.
I think it might be about $15 extra. But dont quote me on that one.
