My parents are currently in China, and will be visiting Taiwan on the 14th of this month. I was hoping to get them to pick up a cellphone for me from there.
I was looking at things like the HTC Magic, and the Nexus One. Also, I heard about the Meizu M8, which sounds interesting but is hard to find info on.
Any other suggestions? Reviews on either one?

I don't like the HTC phones... do they have multi-touch like the iphone yet? if not, then skip it!

I just got an lg pop and I like it. It's kinda like a cheaper version of an iphone. Has lots of good features and a wicked camera IMO. It's a fun phone

The Nexus One is a good phone. I'm using the HTC Dream and loving it. Give it a shot!

The Android OS looks really appealing to me. Really gives apple a run for its money.

Doooooo it. You'll love it.
The OS is open-source and there are so many free apps for it. I just read this the other day:

I'd definitely go with a Nokia N97 or N900, always been a fan of Nokia N series phones, would be what I'm using if I hadn't gotten a Blackberry, can't go wrong with a Nokia!
fyi, I wouldn't recommend getting a phone from Asia if you plan on using a data plan with it, the 3G networks from Asia/Europe are a different frequency so your data here would suffer (you won't get 3g coverage), I'd go with a North American version of whatever phone you want (if that is available).

the rest of the world is still trying to catch up to the iphone by copying it... Have you seen the preview video for iphone os4 coming out this summer? Lots of new cool features

I want the Nexus One. Stupidly though, I bought a new phone 2 summers ago and then like 2 months later everything went to iPhone-esque touch screens. Maybe when my contract is up the Nexus Two will be out.

my experience is that cell phone prices are pretty much par between china and canada. excluding maybe HK.

I find that buying the phone in HK tends to be cheaper than buying here.
I think my phone was almost $100 CDN more expensive here (found in PMall) than in HK
As for recommendations, I can't really give any.

Nokia's build quality is sturdy as hell. I use an N73 I've dropped it countless of times from leaving it on my lap when I drive and I forget it's still there when I get out of the car =\
The other day I was walking to the car and I dropped that thing so hard on the concrete floor that the memory card came out of its slot and all it got was just a small chip, unbelievable!
@stevenma188, did you decide on a phone yet?

Still deciding on a phone. You guys are correct in that the price difference between China and here are minimal (sometimes more expensive depending on the phone). I'm just going to buy a phone here when my contract ends in July.

Nope! I have the app, it actually works.
My guess would be since the phone has a compass built in, the app detects any sort of magnetism.

Depends what you really want it for.
If you want it for not just phone, but multimedia, random games, fun apps, then I'm pretty sure iPhone wins by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aarr..
I personally use the HTC Hero, and I love it to death.
I can't see myself using the phone for gaming often anyway, so I can skip that.
I use all my things through google: Google Calendar, Google Contacts, GMail, so the Android platform really helps me sync and organize all my google stuff.
Hero looks nice too!
But if I were you, and if you can wait... I would wait for HTC Desire, it looks seeeeeeeeeexy
But then again, if you want it for multimedia, and games, I highly doubt Android will overcome Apple's App Store anytime soon, so you should get the new iPhone that's coming out.

Copy and Paste is actually available on the regular iPhone 3G...so that's not what he's talking about. There's much cooler and more innovative stuff they're bringing out for the 4G model.
& also, UOU has one of the coolest/funniest signatures on the forums...I don't understand your need to bash him.

Credit goes to another member for the design, but i suppose you left your attention to detail in the same place as your sense of humour. These five companies seem to be copying the iphone, but then again we've already established you don't get out much and or pay attention to detail well so it's no surprise this is all new information to you.

Anyone have any hookups for plans? GAHHHH so many decisions to make.

ROGERS
- Call CSR
- Talk about how your plan is expensive and that you are thinking of switching to another company
- If the CSR doesnt satisfy your budget, request to speak with Customer Care
- Inform Customer Care your budget, and inform them that you got the plan at the same price with another mobile company (Koodo, Public Mobile, Wind Mobile)
You should have the cheapest possible plan ever after speaking to them
