April 13th 2010,
Starting tomorrow, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will kick off their Spring Seatbelt Campaign.
Running until April 24, and working in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation as well as other road safety groups, the OPP is hoping to curb the unsafe practice of driving without restraints.
The OPP claims that through the first three months of this year, 11 people have died as a result of not wearing a seatbelt and dozens more have been seriously injured. In 2009, 68 of the 310 deaths in car accidents on Ontario highways were attributed to the lack of a seatbelt.
Drivers found not to be using a seatbelt properly can expect a $235 fine and two demerit points.

Buckle up! Police to launch seatbelt blitz across Ontario
April 14th 2010, THE CANADIAN PRESS
Transport Minister Kathleen Wynne and other dignitaries will attend the official launch later today at a Toronto school.
Police estimate that for every one per cent increase in seatbelt use, five lives are saved in Ontario every year.
This spring's campaign will focus on drivers who fail to secure their children safely.
Child safety seat clinics have shown that 80 per cent of car seats are installed or used incorrectly.
Seatbelt tickets issued by a police officer have a set fine amount of $240, and upon conviction, drivers are assessed two demerit points against their licence.

I wear my seatbelt every day, but I think it's extremely hypocritical that police tell everyone to buckle up or they get a ticket when they usually aren't wearing one themselves.
The cop that died in Peel recently wasn't wearing his seatbelt. It was buckled behind him so it wouldn't chime...

There are a lot of older cars (Muscle Car Era and prior) that don't have seat belts or at best have lap belts. The rinky-dink lap belt isn't gonna do a thing if I were to get into an accident in my '69 Malibu but I put it on pretty much all the time now just for the sake of not getting a ticket (if they would ever give me one). In any regular vehicle though it's the first thing I put on. Hell, I usually put it on even if I'm moving around a parking lot at 10km/h - it's just my natural reaction to getting in a car seat.

They don't put their seatbelt for a reason, well a "detective" shouldn't just in case of emergency, as I believe it interferes with their gun holster or how they pull out their gun just in case.
I know, I watch too much Criminal Minds. LOL. The "detectives" should be the only one's doing this, not the timmies/cruising popos. :chuckle

This is a terrible excuse. It takes less than 2 sec to undo it and jump out of the car. They can always take it off at any time.
I wear my seatbelt all of the time, always have and always will.

I think it's the same with seat belt. Accident can happen in less than 2 second too.

you want a simple solution to this?? Anyone who gets involved in an accident, and who is not wearing a seat belt automatically forfiets any and all right to:
1. their insurance- they are on the hook for not only thier vehicle but for any and all other damages (to other cars, property, towing, clean up etc)
2. OHIP coverage- you pay out of your own pocket if you get injured, can't afford to pay?? well to bad either end up permanently crippled or die we don't need people like you spreading your genes

I know but still, they can take it off at any time. It's not like random people are driving by a cop and shooting at them. If it does happen it's 1/347,264. :chuckle

Nice number
By the law, if you are behind the wheel of a vehicle that is turned on, you must have a seat belt on. Cops sit around and idle alot (paperwork..etc...) Think of that cop in Ottawa that was sitting in his car, doing paper work, and got randomly killed. Or was it out west where some guy came into a donut shop and shot those cops. There are people out there randomly killing cops. I tend to err in the favor of the police (probably applying for Toronto this fall)hahaha

yeah, well in this case, we aren't stopping them to check their seat belts so I would just suggest that everyone buckle up if they don't lol.

the fact that police needs to have a campaign like this for seatbelts is just sad on our part. if you dont want to wear a seatbelt you should just jump off the CN Tower since your asking to die! if your in a hurry, start the car and put the belt on then, you have to let the engine run for a bit anyways to allow the oil to run through it! within the few seconds that you have to wait, you can pu on a seatbelt!
also with the police not having to wear seatbelts cuz it gets in the way of their holster. thats stupid cuz if the belt buckle is right where the holster is, the police can unbuckle the seatbelt with the index finger while grabbing the gun with the rest of his fingers and using his thumb to unclip the holster. if he has to reach down there anyways he should learn to do it all in one motion or else hes gonna die/get hurt either way!
sorry for my rant.

Police are actually exempt from seatbelt laws though.

The 401 West onramp is going southbound on Warden is pretty much a blind almost 90 degree curve and there are quite a handful of times a few OPP cruisers have a seatbelt stop/check set up. And it's alway so sad to see how many ppl are already pulled/getting pulled over when I'm on that ramp getting onto the highway.. Also sad that they really need 2 cruisers out there.. The one officer alone wouldn't be able to keep up with writing no seatbelt tickets..
I go a little overboard with wearing a seatbelt.. It's habit for me to put it on, even if I'm just moving to different spots in the same parking lot. Guess it can't be a bad thing to go overboard on wearing a seatbelt.
