Just a question about the oil drain plug in our cars. The drain plug has a little washer/o-ring/gasket, whatever mazda wants to call it. The question is is that piece one that should be replaced every once in a while, like a crush gasket?

The o ring should come with your oil filter, just change it everytime you change the oil, only takes two seconds

The 0-ring around the drain plug? never seen one in any of the filters that I've bought including Mazda 0EM ones, what's the part # for that if anyone knows?

It's a separate part number.

They always came with the Fram filters I buy from CT.

I just did my oil this week, picked up a fram filter, got both the o-ring for the plug, as well as for the oil filter housing

I've been getting the Quaker state ones usually, no O-ring that comes in that kit

+1 for fram.....just make sure you don't lose the little ring. I've lost it twice now when tearing open the package for the big gasket for the filter.

the OP is talking about the oil pan drain plug/bolt, NOT the 2.3l plastic POS cartridge filter housing's o'rings or drain plug

the drain plug's crush washer is supposed to be replaced everytime... but you can get away with a couple of oil changes if you don't overtorque it... just a good snug (1/8 turn) is enough!
mazda part number for the crush washer is 9956-41-400

The washer on the drain plug in my car is still original at 4 years and 95,000 kilometers. No drips or anything, not even a sign of "sweating" around the plug, but I always tighten it by hand and go easy on it.

As long as the contact areas of the washer is nice and flat, there is no need to change it.

as long as it's not mashed down or deformed, then yeah it'll be ok

There is a thread on M3F (http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=161457.msg3429168#msg3429168) which will either answer all your questions about Mazda3 drain plug gaskets or leave you too terrified to ask any questions which remain un-answered.
