Mazda may fix about 280,000 Mazda3/Axela cars worldwide
April 15, 2010 08:31 CET

TOKYO -- Mazda Motor Corp. said it would recall 89,822 Mazda3/Axela compact cars in Japan and China to fix a problem with the oil hose, and a further 191,503 sold elsewhere including Europe could be subject to repairs.

In a filing with Japan's transport ministry, Mazda said driving on rough roads for an extended time could cause the oil hose to rub against the radiator's protective panel, causing oil to leak with wear. In the worst case, the car would be unable to start, it said.

No accident or complaint had been reported in Japan from the defect, Mazda said.

The Mazda3 model sold in the United States carries a different engine and is not subject to any repairs, a spokesman said.

Mazda will decide how to repair the model in Europe and other markets according to safety regulations in each country, he said

here is the recall in question:
http://www.mazda.co.jp/service/recall/177/176/105/003704.html

it affects only 1.5l (japan) and 1.6l (europe/R.O.W.) automatic BK (1st gen) Mazda3s
a poorly molded radiator core support (fiber glass) has sharp edges which will rub through/cut the auto tranny cooler hoses... on the 1.5 and 1.6, there is an external tranny cooler that sits in front of the radiator (near the top) and there are holes that pass the hoses through near the top driver's side corner of the radiator... the fix is to replace those hoses with updated ones that have foam protectors in place... this whole setup doesn't exist on the 2.0l and 2.3l (and 2.5 in the BL) which north america only gets, so it's nothing to worry about for us... the 2.0l/2.3l tranny cooler is a cylinder that is bolted onto the tranny and water hoses go to it instead of having ATF feed into the radiator or an external cooler as typically done...

YES, it is possible to get the 1.5l/1.6l tranny cooler and run it in tandem with the stock water cooler on our 2.0/2.3s, just like the 2.5l BLs (and 2.0l mexican BLs) do... it is a part orderable by a dealership here, but not the hoses (which are the "faulty" parts in question)... it will bolt right onto our cars which makes perfect fitment, except you'll have to reengineer the hoses yourself!

so short answer: we got nothing to worry about! this recall doesn't affect us!
