I found a bottle of Octane Booster I received for xmas last year from a friend of mine. I sorta tossed it aside because I wasn't sure if it was safe to use in my MS3.
Any harm in using it?

I think these octane boosters are more placebos then anything. Shouldn't really do any harm though. Just make sure it's actually a fuel addictive, and not an energy drink (Believe me, I know it sound stupid but has been done).

Oh it's no energy drink I can assure you :)

Haha, ya I can't find the thread now, but there was a link to a motorcycle forum where the guy poured like 3 bottles of the NOS energy drink into his tank thinking it was octane booster....Had to ask :chuckle
I would say if you have it, might as well use it. Probably won't do anything though.

Hahah Nos energy drink.. wow ya I'm not that stupid (yet) to put in a energy drink.. that just blows me away that someone actually did that.
If the container is in the fridge at 7-11 how the hell would you think it's for your car? :)

the only reason to ever use octane booster on a MS3 is if you're stuck in somewhere where they don't have premium unleaded/91+ oct gas, so you'd use octane booster. otherwise, you'll not see appreciable gains...engines need to be tuned to take advantage of higher octane...running higher octane on its own will not yield more power if your engine isn't tuned for it.

Cool thanks Fobio
Ya I just happened to find it when I was cleaning up the garage last weekend
I guess I can dump it in the gf's car :D No real point in keeping it on hand

It 'could' give something if the octane booster has the chemicals or massively spikes the octane levels to minutely/marginally 'clean' the injectors of carbon, but at most, you'll be noticing 'barely' any 'gains'.

So if I supposedly had access to 87 grade fuel, putting in an octane booster would make the speed 3 run like 91. Please clarify. Thanks in advance.

technically yes, but higher grade fuels should also contain more "detergents" in them as well...
in the long run, running 91 oct is enough and running 87 + octane booster is financially stupid.
so, for example, you drive into some parts of northern ontario or in the US and all you have access to was 87 oct, then having a bottle of octane booster will be useful to maintain the minimum octane requirement.

Thanks man...going OT here but is toluene a good substitute?

ppl have used it as fuel replacement and other recipes use it as octane booster...I personally have no experience with it and wouldn't have a reason to touch it.

i used toluene before... cheaper and better than octane booster... just have to use lots of it

Do high octane fuels and products like the one the OP posted help to clean oil buildup inside the cylinders -- even if only theoretically?
Like say for example you had a bad seal in a piston ring, and over time oil (and I suppose other residues) was getting in there... would high octane fuel/fuel additives theoretically help clean that up a bit?

Octane boosters do not really do that, however, there are Fuel system, and fuel injector cleaners available.

Ok, cool -- thanks. Was just wondering if maybe the higher octane would contribute somewhat to the cleaning effect.

I've always ran a bottle through before a dyno day ... actually one the week before so the ECU would adjust and another on the tank in the car for the actual dyno itself. never had an identical car to compare against but i've always come out well in terms of the output rankings put down for the day
