With the good weather just around the corner it’s imperative that owners realize that there is a need to service their cars.

Since the introduction of the computerized electronic injections systems and the complete abandonment of the older carburetor system, vehicles have gained the ability to self adjust. The computer continually monitors the parameters that are needed to operate the vehicle with in emissions standards and automatically makes adjustments. The net result of all this technology? People have wrongly assumed that today’s cars do not need to be maintained. They do.
Every new car delivered comes with a recommended maintenance schedule. This schedule is actually the minimum service required for safe and reliable driving. When using the schedule use the severe service schedule. In Canada we have wide swings in temperature and climate. Vehicles operating in these harsh conditions due require more service. Skimping on the service is a false economy.
Oil changes should occur at least every 4 months or 5000 kms (8000kms if you’re running synthetic oil).
Cabin air filters should be swapped out once a year, best going into spring.
Engine filters (air, CV, etc) should be checked and changed as required.
Brake systems, should be inspected and serviced as required. Brakes should be serviced going into the winter and coming out of the harsh weather.
Tires should be inspected for wear, damage, and stale dating.
Wipers and washer systems
Heater and air conditioning systems should be checked for operation.
Exhaust systems, damaged, cracked or bent. The tech will check for the efficiency of the catalytic converter and other sensors mounted in the exhaust stream.
This is just a short list of things that need to be looked at and serviced. Many models require timing belt changes, sensor up dates etc. Has the vehicle developed and leaks over the season? Are recalls or update pending?
Take a moment and talk with your tech about the best way to service your car. A good shop lives by a simple motto, “Supply safe, reliable and economical service”.
Words to drive by.
