View Full Version : Jobs: Spreading the wealth

So as of late, I've been actively looking for a new job. My current place simply doesn't offer the challenge and growth that i'm looking for (ie. told point-blank that there's no more room to go up). The environment is really toxic, and the only real challenge is seeing how much work you can do before passing out, rather than the degree of difficulty and intellect involved.
Though i've been through a few interviews, none have really panned out to being a good match. Seeing as it's still very much an "employer's market", I found that the only solid leads come from personal and word-of-mouth referrals, and was hoping maybe someone here could help me out.
Anyone here have any specific leads/insights/postings they'd like to share? No blind suggestions like "go to workopolis" please. I'm currently in IT (manage a small support dept) though I have a background in both tech and business. Perhaps it's time to go back to school?
If its not in my field, feel free to put up a posting anyway - i'm sure someone here could use a hand too!
Thanks guys

Dude, most of the companies I know (that pay summer students well PLUS you get amazing references) ARE DONE for summer hiring and will be training in 2-3 weeks lol

I had lunch with the owner of IT4ce in Mississauga, which is an IT Solution reseller/ provider. They work with Citrix, VMware, etc. He asked me if I knew anyone for an Inside Sales position they have open. Basically you would pinpoint the client's pains/ wekanesses, and offer recommendations. The right candidate would be able to uncover opportunities and follow through with deal progression. Basic IT sales 101.... hahaha

I think I recall reading somewhere that you were in sales? Are you interested in that still? If so, you could try being a Financial Adviser for an FI or something.

Those are all commission based, depends if he is comfortable living with a variable income.

I haven't touched sales since my retail days, but if the base is decent enough I wouldn't mind giving it a try...

I know alot of these IT sales guys have a base salary higher then the overall salary of most guys I know (which really doesn't say alot as most are still working jobs; not a career). Factor in the comission, you could easily hit $80k-$100k.... depending on how the comission is structured. I know $80k may not sound like alot, but figure the overall average income for an individual in the GTA is about $60k-$70k. It's just that sales has alot of pressure invovled...... if you don't hit your #'s, you could be out of a job.
But then again, I guess that could be said about alot of places.......

^^ Yeah... I had a job offer for tech data for a similar role, but since I wasn't already in the organization, I didn't have a fall-back position to go back to.

I have a friend who use to work at Tech Data. He was more of an order taker then anything sales related. Isn't that some where on Matheson?!?!

It's at Creditview + Derry. Funny thing, I was working in the Tech Data building with another company at the time of the interview :chuckle
I was kind of partial to the job, it's amazingly close to home, but the job involved cold-calling which I don't think i'd be very good at :P

Most distribution reps are order takers, rather than true sales reps. Once you graduate to becoming a field AE at distribution, you are a little less of an order taker. If you want to get into sales, I don't think inside sales at distribution is a good place to start. You should focus more on the reseller community. Try and find a reseller that has a market presence, but substantially smaller than the CDW, SoftChoice, Insight's of the world.

At CIBC, if you work for Imperial Service, they get a base of 55 and then quarterly commission. At the branch I'm at, it's easy for the folks to hit 6 figures after commissions.

^ See, that's a reasonable base. I've come across offers (from synex) for $30k base + comission.
