View Full Version : I want to detail my car from scratch! (Pun entirely intended)

I picked up my 08 m3sGT yesterday and noticed a few clear coat scratches and one rather large rock chip underneath the driver side door handle. The car was washed out of the dealership but frankly they did a bad job of it. :flaming I've decided to put some real TLC into this body and detail the car myself as much as possible, both for my wallet and expectations' sake.

I have lots of time so I figured I'd ask around to compile the complete detailing sequence. I want to accomplish the following:

1) Wash the car of any dust/spots that were left over from the dealership
2) Take out (buff? chemical? pen?) all the scratches, chips, swirls that I see on the exterior of the car
3) Protect the paint from future scratches/chips (sealant? 3M film? Both?)
4) Rust proof before summer heat hits (Oil? Electronic module?)
5) Polish/wax/shine everything so that my scratchless, chipless, swirless body can be presented to the world. :thumbsup

I'd greatly appreciate any input, as this is my first car and I plan on keeping it till the end of its life. I'm very meticulous about my possessions (I don't replace things very often) hence the near-OCD level of care I plan on putting into this vehicle. :chuckle Any brands/services you could recommend that would be far better than doing it by hand would also be appreciated.

TL;DR : Help me get rid of scratches/chips and protect my exterior as thoroughly as possible!

Thanks in advance :headbang

Autopia.org has a great detailing guide/handbook. Read it, and post up an questions you have.
