This guy is an idiot. Don't get me wrong, the officer was an idiot with his questions but you simply don't **** with the border patrol.
Be as polite as possible and you won't get hassled. I have never had any trouble like this when I go over.

What a moron. You don't act like an entitled prick when you're trying to enter a foreign country.

Sometimes they ask the same question (sometimes worded differently) twice in a line of questioning to catch you in a lie.

+1. They have asked me what my parents did for work, how much money I make, what I do for a living, etc. Definitely personal questions. All the guy had to say was, "I'm not sure as we haven't been there before". Then they would have moved on. His wife should have kept quiet too. Unless a question is directed at you, shut the hell up.

The questions/expectations on the answers were a bit harsh...but the guy was being needlessly idiotic.

When crossing with some friends once, they asked each of us what we did. Nothing really specific but general "IT work" or whatever. Yet other times "where are you going? How long? Ok, go ahead".

It all depends on the officer and the initial impression or 'gut feeling' he/she gets about the traveler. I typically have a standard set of questions I go through and within one or two questions I'll know where this is going. I'll either finish it up and let them go or I'll start to ask some more in depth questions to help build up to my conclusion.
If you start giving attitude, you will have a fun time going through the border. What could have been a 10-15 minute process could now take a few hours. Just be polite, answer the questions you are asked and don't give any attitude. It's not that difficult.
(I work at the border so I deal with people like this a lot lol)

This guy must have already been on the "list". Nobody records their crossing the border interview unless they know their will be problems. And if he is not on their list, he is after that day on the recording.
Just wow....I'm still stunned that someone can be so arrogant sitting and having questions asked to them. If I was ever in his shoes I'd be as polite as possible as not to have anyone do an internal search for "drugs".

"we don't need any grounds, we're the united states" LOL
Such fascist border guards, this is why I'm not traveling to the US anytime soon.
Pulling your arm away from an officer is assault.... that is a joke, so basically you let them beat you up/abuse you... right
raise your voice = threatening a police officer but if they raise their voice they're just using their authority to do their job... right *Sarcasm*

I don't find it funny.. i find it pathetic.. i understand border guards have a job to do, but when you ask retarted questions like what stores are you going to shop at.. give me a break. Border guards are out to intimidate people.
No wonder theres all these terrorists ready to bomb the US..
pricks.
Border guards, just really ticked off people who couldnt cut it for the police :.02

oh my god.. that's insane...
They are SO harsh particularly at the Niagra Falls border... my friend and I were trying to find the jet boat tours and the GPS messed up somehow and took us right to the US border... we had to go through the whole thing, wait in line, pay the $6 each to get back through, and this border patrol chick was totally yelling at us the entire time and calling us stupid because we missed our cut off. She was like "Are you blind? How did you not see the sign?"... surprisingly she let me back through, even tough I didn't have any ID on me at the time.
Welcome to Canada, eh??

What an idiot. I like the end part, not so arrogant after all. Obviously that person doesn't deal with law enforcement otherwise he would have been more polite from the get-go.
Yah... question the border guard's questions.. ... that's not a disaster waiting to happen. Who the hell tapes this stuff unless he was intending on starting trouble.
You also don't wanna be on that list like loganm3 mentioned, otherwise your in for a headache everytime you cross the border. My friend is on that list because he said he was going to fix a server in the states (business trip). Apparently they don't like that answer - taking jobs from Americans. He was denied entry. Everytime he goes across the border he is delayed big time.

Guy totally deserves what he got. No sympathy from me. "I wont follow orders unless I understand them"..... Good luck getting across from now on bud.

Always be polite, don't yell at them, and don't give them attitude.

Just did a border cross today. 'Randomly' selected for inspection. Sweet.
I was lead to a little garage with a booth, and in that booth a small sealed room. Lining the walls were sanitary gloves... fortunately they only searched the car. I thought it fitting I was wearing my CSI shirt.

No offense to anyone's opinion, but the guy trying to cross didn't say anything wrong. He has the right to question why he is being stopped, questioned and detained. You also have the right to turn away and return without question if you feel unsafe.
People raise their voices all the time, yet it doesn't give ground to arrest anyone.

It's not so much what he said but how he said it. Although he has the right to question why he's being stopped, questioned and detained, the US has the "right" to not explain themselves at all. I don't agree with it but that's just how it is. The US is a f*cked up country....there's no such thing as free speech anymore. Take a look at the Patriot Act...

A lot of people don't realize that customs and border people have more power than cops do in many circumstances. They can detain people and search pretty much at will, without the need for pesky things like warrants and such. Sometimes people think of them akin to mall cops and talk to them accordingly, only to end up having issues like this.

funny comment from one site covering this story:
Here's my theory on that one; the couple crossing the border posing as shoppers were really working for a group of terrorist and while they were being stopped and harassed the real terrorist in the white Buick behind them, got through. Paranoid yet? You should be! And if you don't like my sarcasm.....
