Upgrade to HID's. No better time.

Unless you're going for an HID kit, replace the bulb with a factory Mazda one. They last long (mine did) and do the job unless you're going HID as previously stated; ~$24 installed at the dealership. I'm only skeptical about third-party bulbs that claim to 'look better' and are apparently brighter, but then don't last very long at all. My factory bulbs in my '05 '3 lasted more than 2 years (daily usage).
is that $24 for one bulb installed at the dealer?
yeah im def. not going to do something like the silverstars, i'll either do the oem replacement bulb (if its cost effective) or go for broke and just upgrade to the HIDs
also, if nayone knows anything i would need to consider when installing the HIDs? i hear theres issues with the bulbs flickering when they're used as DRLs, etc. ??

I had used both Silverstar & Silverstar ultra. These bulbs won't last long and they burn out less than 3 mths. Just use any regular bulb with double L (long life) or replace with HID kit.

Instead of the common jump to HID, and to answer the OP question...
here is a non-hid, but halogen upgrade you can look into... these bulbs are Euro spec, which from I understand are known to be brighter but brighter in the sense that there is an actual improvement in light output plus high end quality due to these are actual light bulb manufactures :
You can look into the following halogen bulb:

or get the eurolite bulbs, they last about as long as the stock bulbs. i had them in my 3 for a long time before i got my HID kit, and my dad still has them in his car after about 6 months.

HID from 1 of the sponsor here sells for $80 no waiting. Online, I bought my HIDs 8000k 55 watts (h7) + extra H11 bulbs (yellow) for the fogs for $92 from DDM tuning

Downside is you may have to wait 3 weeks till it arrives in the mal. Brand is Apexcone, I ordered another set for my cousin's 2001 celica with same h7 bulbs. Should be no issue with DRL just connect the ground from the ballast to a good body ground instead of straight to the oem socket. The + from the ballast goes to the socket, you can check polarity by using a peen light tester or multimeter?

+1 from DDM tuning.
my first kit i bought years ago cost me $290, and last me a year or so before the one ballast went.
my second kit i got from DDM tuning cost me under $100, and have more than double the life of my previous ones
fwiw, the old kit was Prolumens, and the new (current) kit is Apexcones. both where 6000k's, but the apexcones seem a little more white.

Thanks for the info/pics.
I ordered a kit from one of our sponsors H7 6000K
now im just waiting for the Capacitors to come in the mail before i do it all up.
anyone have any recommendations or tips with respect to the installation? i've looked over the writeup on this site, and watched the DIY video on youtube.
only thing im not Entirly sure of is using the black gromit that comes attached to the set, as a spacer. i couldnt seem to find any write-ups or pictures of exactly how i should cut that piece up to use as a spacer

I pioneered that method :) I basically would make 1 cut from the outside to the center of the grommet. Then individually cut out the 4 strands of wires. Finally I would slice off the cylindrical shaped part where the 4 wires used to be. This way, there is a hole in the center that the wiring on the back of the bulb will fit through.

nice thanks!
is there any issue in terms of. water/dirt getting behind the oem headlight housing gromit which attaches to the headlight housing?
because now i've cut up this HID gromit which would normaly fit against the larger OEM headlight housing gromit?

The mazda5 oem comes with this adaptor. check your original bulbs if you have that and you can cut that to make a spacer. The apexcone ccomes with the spacer. I think Illumination technique sells them for like $10
