I update mine if it comes out. Theres no harm in upgrading so I dont see why not. The only time i wasnt sure if i should update or not was the time when it said by upgrading, I will no longer be able to install an OS (i have a fat one) which was fine for me because I wasnt planning on doing it anytime soon but was not sure if I still wanted the compatibility to do so in the future. I ended up doing it

The only reason not to update to the latest firmware, is if you plan on hacking your PS3 or installing Linux. The latest FW update removed the option to "Install Other OS' which people used to run Linux etc.. however someone figured out how to hack the PS3 through installing linux.
I held out for awhile, while I decided if I wanted to wait for a PS3 hack or not.. but I ended up updating the other day..I couldn't wait any longer and besides the hack is a pain in the ass to do and it's not official yet.

I've done it each time too, but Yah, that OS thing scared me too.
but like I said, i'm a total noob when it comes to these things so like you, it's not like i'm going to change it out either.
seems like there's an update every couple weeks.

Friend updated when he popped in Fifa World Cup and it broke his ps3 (outside of warranty).
It doesn't want to read any blueray discs anymore , strictly DVDs.

Does he have the old fat PS3 or the new slim one? That's strange.. unless the lens that reads blu-ray is dead or messed up. It's rare a system update would cause issues with the blu-ray player and what it plays.

Sounds like the blu-ray lens is gone. Even though you are out of warranty, you can still have Sony replace it for $150 or something like that. If you look around online, you might even be able to find guys who do the repair for cheaper.

I did some searching around and I found this online..actually on an auction on ebay for replacement lens for the PS3 as I was curious to the problem your friend was having.
* If your PS3 do not read any disk at all regardless of what kind of disk (DVD,BLURAY,PS3 or PS2 for backward compatible systems). Try inserting a disk and observe whether there is a swirling icon on the top right part of the screen (for those with new firmware it is the hands of the clock). See whether it swirls for at least 10 seconds as though it is trying to load. IF you have that then the lens diode has gone south or things are misaligned on it.
Pass this along to your friend and have him try this out. The lens are going for $44+ USD on ebay.
