I miss the days where I could walk into an US Apple Store, buy the original with a CDN credit card, and secretly telling the sales staff to FFFF off with a sly smile when they said, "it might not work in Canada sir and if you hack it, you void the warranty"...LMFAO...

Now...we'll have to see about how Rogers will handle this...

None of the initial 5 countries are countries that have unlocked iPhones (ie Hong Kong and a few others), so buying the iPhone 4 in the US will be a waste of time and money... Also, since it uses a microsim, you can't run a proxy-sim to fake being on AT&T (like the old school days)... Gonna have to wait :/

Apple to offer unlocked iPhones in Canada
Iain Marlow

Canada may be getting the iPhone 4 weeks after it launches in the United States, but we appear to be getting something that’s unavailable to U.S. consumers – unlocked iPhones.

Until now, if you bought an iPhone here you had to choose a Canadian wireless provider at the time of purchase. Carriers offer reduced pricing for handsets but in exchange require purchasers to sign a long-term contract. Regardless, consumers were locked in – you could not simply move to a new carrier, even after your contract expired, without jailbreaking the phone.

According to Apple’s Canadian website, you can now buy an iPhone at full-price from their online store, and sign up with whichever provider you wish.

And ... wait for it ... change your provider any time you like.

This changes the game.

In the U.S., AT&T has an exclusive deal with Apple. Anyone south of the border who wants an iPhone has to use it on AT&T’s network, a company that's had its share of network problems and recently eliminated its unlimited data plans.

But a glimpse on Apple's Canadian website (thanks Boy Genius Report) notes the company is selling its current 8GB 3Gs model ($549) and will sell its new iPhone 4 unlocked.

“When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it commitment-free,” the site reads. “So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time.”

This tactic, which Google and HTC tried with the much-hyped Nexus One, is often viewed as a way for influential handset makers to cut carriers out of the equation. Carriers like to offer handsets through their retail chains, enticing people in with fancy gadgets and signing them up for a long-term contract. Google made an effort at disintermediation, but ended up back-tracking when online sales disappointed.

It's not terribly surprising that Apple is attempting this, since the company often extracts concessions from carriers (and is often viewed as a bully by the wireless provider community).

Of course, iPhone exclusivity is already non-existent in Canada: All three major carriers (Rogers, Bell and Telus) currently offer service for the phone. And all three of the carriers have said they will offer the iPhone 4. So it makes sense to sell the phone unlocked to Canadians, empowering consumers to shop the device around to wherever they'll get the best service (though most data pricing among the Big Three is similar, anyway).

What Apple should do is try to get the service providers in to allow costumers to share their data plans between the iphone and the ipad, i.e. I wouldn't mind to stay locked to a service provider if I can use my 6GB of data a month for my phone and the ipad, this can also persuade customers to buy the 3g iPad which is the most expensive and can generate more revenue.

cwp_sedan
06-15-2010, 02:48 PM

This would be smart, and would probably sell a few more Ipads. But the people that I know that own both just tethered there phones to the ipads to share data.

They had an option last year where you add a year to your contract (after one year of your 3 has expired) and you could go from 3G to 3GS

How does the (Rogers) HUP work? I will have had my iPhone for one year by July this year.

Depends on how Rogers does it this year it may pan out for you or not.

When the iPhone launched in July 2008, Rogers made an exception for all customers who upgraded 3 months prior to upgrade to the iPhone assuming they add a data plan. Then in 2009, when the 3GS launched, Rogers made an exception again but only to those who purchased the iPhone 3G between July and September of 2008.

This year it will be a bit tricky, seeing how 5 carriers have the iPhone. Rogers would be smart to take the hit and offer exceptions for those interested in upgrading instead of switching over to Telus or Bell.

Thanks guys...keeping my fingers crossed.

I just realized I never answered your exact question regarding Rogers HUP's.

Here is an explanation of the current HUP system from Rogers internal notes:

Effective January 15th2010, Rogers is eliminating Hardware Upgrade Tier fees! As part of the new enhancements customers will benefit from being able to upgrade every 24 months at both the 2 and 3 year in market price which will now align with new customer pricing. All customers within a multi-line account will be eligible for 2 and 3 year in market pricing after 24 months since initial activation or last hardware upgrade. And the $35 administration fee will be consistent across all consumer upgrades.

Details:

As a customer’s monthly spend and loyalty accumulates since last upgrade or initial activation, they will have more discounted device options available to them, meaning more device categories (listed below) may become available prior to month 24.

High value customers may have the option to upgrade early (as early as month 12) to a discounted or promotional offer based on the customers monthly spend and time since last upgrade or initial activation.

HUP eligibility will be enhanced to include 5 new device categories the customer is upgrading to:

Category I: Voice (classic phones)

Category II: Quick Messaging Devices (QMD)

Category III : Blackberry

Category IV: Other Smartphones (Android, Windows Mobile etc.)

Category V: iPhone

This is of course under normal circumstances. We should find out soon if any exceptions will be made on the iPhone.

It will prob be delayed in Canada so no need to get too excited yet. Due to high volume of sales south of border and Canada usually being looked at as after thought, it is almost to the point where it will be confirmed as was the same case as the IPad.

You have re-install you apps. Just remember to backup before proceeding.

I don't recommend upgrading yet. Some Cydia apps don't work. I'm having an issue accessing Settings > General, it crashes and brings me back to Springboard. I've concluded that after restoring your backup, something messes up. I was able to access it right after jailbreaking it, but not after restoring a backup.

Actually a lot of Cydia apps don't work.. winterboard and a lot of others... you can upgrade but just don't expect to have everything all fancy and addons working.

Right now the only addon mod I'm running is fontswap for the lockscreen clock and notes fonts. Oh and I"m also running memtool which works fine.

I did a full restore with 3.1.2. If you hold Shift-Restore you can select your fw and I just did a full restore to 3.1.2, then upgraded to the final 4.0 which came out the other day, this is not the GM firmware release.. this the official final.. the GM fw is 316MB and the final official release is 342MB

Works fine for me so far.

Wow... Neglectful (http://www.pcworld.com/article/199853/apple_responds_to_iphone_4_antenna_problem.html?tk =hp_pop)

To be fair, that really is a non-issue in my books. Unless EVERYONE holds their phone like that then they can't please everyone. Everyone is going to have complaints and no one can design a 100% perfect device. Someone is ALWAYS going to find something to complain about. They probably designed it, saw it as a possible problem, but the fact that it only happens when you hold it like that with your bare palm in that exact spot means that it's pretty minimal. Put a case on it, no issue. Hold it with that hand but don't put your palm there, no issue. Added to the fact that not every one has that problem as reported by your link before that which stated...

Our second UK-purchased iPhone 4 was fine, showing none of these handling symptoms

As a programmer, I'd respond the EXACT same way. We can't design something to be 100% foolproof that works 100% of the time no matter what a user does. If they find a way to break it or get it to act weird that really only affects a small percentage of the people where you can't replicate it on every single unit but you have the option to do the same thing a different way, then do it that different way and stop complaining! Basically, in our programs, unless it can be replicated 80% of the time or more, we consider it a non important issue. Specially if they go outside the way we trained and are being stubborn about it as then it's a user error as they are going outside how it was designed.

^^^ Holding the phone in a certain way kind of excludes a fair number of people... If it were something like "the iphone won't work under water while being attacked by a giant squid", then yeah - it's reasonable to expect that. But forbidding certain hand contact and or orientation on a product that requires hand interaction is terrible.

But forbidding certain hand contact and or orientation on a product that requires hand interaction is terrible.

But the point is that it's also not ALL iPhone4's that do that. As illustrated by a quote from BOTH your links provided...

http://www.pcworld.com/article/199853/apple_responds_to_iphone_4_antenna_problem.html?tk =hp_pop (This was in a users comment)

This is a nonissue with my new iphone 4. First thing I did was completely cover each corner while on a call and had absolutely no reduction in signal strength at all. Phone is awesome.

and

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/some-iphone-4-models-see-signals-drop-to-0-when-held-left-handed/ (This was in the actual article)

Bridging the two with a finger tip, however, didn't cause any issues with the reported reception.

...

Our second UK-purchased iPhone 4 was fine, showing none of these handling symptoms.

So the fact you can't replicate it with every phone AND it's only holding it one specific way to me leads to a non-issue. Probably a compromise to address the complaints of the older iPhones signal issues/dropped calls while keeping their design. Basically, I'd rather have this...where I KNOW a way to have dropped calls but the rest is fine compared to not knowing.

Been having trouble reproducing the reception issue. I managed to do something with a weird positioning of my fingers that got the reception to drop two bars after 3-5 minutes of holding it a specific way (based on Internet videos). It didn't do anything tho. All my iphones have done this in some way or another. If you put a death grip on your 3GS it'll drop some bars too, esp wifi.

Maybe it's worse in the US? Their 3G freq is higher and has less penetration (giggity) then our 850mhz.

As for yellow screen, don't have that issue. The screen is absolutely amazing though....

You raise a good point. AT&T is notoriously known for their horrible network, so that could be why things aren't looking good at the moment.

Maybe Apple should've launched it in countries that have decent networks first

Looks like Apple is going to hold a press conference regarding the problems of the iPhone 4:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/14/apple-to-hold-press-conference-on-iphone-4-this-friday/

death grip/antenna gate will finally be addressed but NOT VIA RECALL

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is not planning on issuing an iPhone 4 recall at tomorrow's press conference.

Apple's iPhone 4 has been dogged by reports of antenna-reception problems since its launch last month. The company has called a news conference to discuss the issue Friday. Apple doesn't plan to recall the phone, a person familar with the matter said.
Apple engineers were apparently aware of the risks associated with the external antenna design but "Mr. Jobs liked the design so much that Apple went ahead with its development". Earlier today, a Bloomberg article similarly claimed an Apple engineer expressed concern about the design.

The iPhone 4 signal issue has exploded in the media in recent days even with New York senator Charles Schumer publishing an open letter to Steve Jobs expressing concerns about the issue. Schumer is known for his efforts in consumer protection.

Apple is holding a press conference tomorrow to address the issue.

Price will be standard across all carriers as usual with all iPhone releases nationally and internationally. The only thing to watch out for is any special data promotions which will be definitive now that Bell is introducing a $30/6GB data, which would force Rogers to re-introduce theirs. Also, rumor has it Rogers will be allowing anyone who has not upgraded or activated prior to June 7, 2010 will be eligible for some sort of upgrade credit on the iPhone 4.

Actually, a multi-carrier dealer.

What phone do you currently have?

Blackberry 8830. Not a BAD phone...just I'm getting tired of it and want a full touch screen phone. Looked at Android phones but keep coming back to the iPhone.

Take my word for it, working 2 years in wireless and going through 2 iPhone releases, the BlackBerry Storm, and several Android devices (Including the Xperia X10). Nothing "just works" like the iPhones.

I currently have a BlackBerry 9700, 9000 and an iPhone 3G, and had a 3GS (sold it). The iPhone 3G is slow-as-fack but it still impresses me more than any of the BlackBerry-duo's I own.

And I am speaking from a consumer stand point with technical support, quality and functionality. Its worth the wait if you have to wait.

I've waited this long to get an iPhone. It's not the wait really. It's more the fact that I'd rather not go in store if I can avoid it (avoid it because I don't like to and not a lot of time to). But none of the companies seem to make it easy to do stuff online. I guess they just want people in the store :S

I always said this to customers that wanted to leave Rogers.

"Go ahead."

In the end, I know they'll come back. As a multi-dealer (dealing for Bell, Fido, Solo, Rogers and Virgin). And I have a few buddies at Telus, Rogers is the most lenient of all. All you gotta know is how to talk them through what you want without any yelling or anger of course.

Oh yeah ? Bell to offer 6gb for $30 ? Don't see it on their website yet.

Might as well pay the $5 extra and get 5.5gb more !

I am waiting on my sources to get the up to date skim for the upgrade policy.

I sincerely doubt the bugs will be worked out on this hardware cycle - you'd have to wait till the next generation comes along.

If they make a hardware change, it'd be like admitting that they were wrong... And we all know how well Apple does that.

Think about it this way. Sign a 3-year, grab the iphone, and by next year/next gen, renew your 3-year to get the new revision.

Yes. I did a HUP in November to a BB9700, and I hate it with the out most regret. POS phone, been through 5 of them and now I just don't use it at all. Using a BB9000 instead which is also a POS but is a lot more stable and solid than the 9700. I miss my 3GS so much...never gave me hassle.

How does renewing work exactly? So it's roughly $299 with a 3 year contract, so in 1 year if I want the next gen, I have to pay another $299 for a new phone and sign another 3 year contract?

Well that doesn't mean they'll get it for a full subsidy. It could mean they'll get it for $399 instead of $199. Don't forget Rogers did the same thing when the iPhone 3G was released and allowed EVERYONE who activated/upgraded 3 months prior to the release of the iPhone 3G to pick up and iPhone 3G for $199/$299.

She barely gets any service in our building now with Bell, and when she does the call gets cut off within 1-10 minutes. She gets delayed text messages (by like hours, not just minutes), and some don't even come through. She gets wrongly connected calls and a ridiculously expensive plan without any forgiveness on their part. Bell sucks balls.

Rogers isn't much better but I can at least get a better deal through them.
