View Full Version : Rolling a Stop

Did you know it's 3 demerit points for rolling a stop sign!?!?!? I sure as heck didn't until I looked it up this morning.
Pulled out onto a main road last night in front of a coming police car. Thought nothing of it and then his lights went on. He came up to the car and asked if I knew why he pulled me over, I said I didn't actually (since I really had no clue why) and he said because you rolled the stop sign. I'm like oh, maybe?! as it's not even something you think about really...and he's like you did, I'm just like I don't know. He ran my stuff, came back and then just let me go, without so much as saying "I'm giving you a warning". I'm guessing pretty much just a nuisance pull over because he saw a slightly modified car out at midnight and was looking for other issues.
Either way, rolling a stop is just as bad (if not worse since 3 points is 20 over) then speeding.

They make it a point of significant importance during the G2 and G tests, to fully stop and exaggerate looking both ways before continuing onwards.

You realize that you are supposed to stop at a stop sign? That's why the sign says "STOP" on it. I don't think he popped you because of your car being modified, but more than likely because you failed to obey the rules of the road. I'm not digging on you, although it might sound like it. I was riding with a friend of mine in a completely stock car and he did the same thing at a stop sign in East York. We got pulled over and my friend wasn't as lucky as you were; he got a ticket. The cop told him he failed to come to a complete stop.

It's a moving violation hence the high penalty. I learned the hard way as well within the 1st week of getting a MTX car in front of my old apartment right after exiting the garage. Oh the good old days...
Edit: I just realized you didn't even get a ticket. WTF!? lol You should be happy.

Why do people still think that points are what causes your insurance to go up?
You can get a 1 to 14KM/hr over (0 Points) and still have it cost you up to an extra $45 a month.
And we all do a rolling stop, but I always observe and watch out for cops ALL the time when I drive, because I know these little things are what they look for, and we all are guilty of them...so no one here can say they've never done a rolling stop, but its smart to actually stop when you see a Police cruiser in the vicinity.

I swear that I'm the only person who actually fully stops at every stop sign. I find it unbelievable how many people barely even slow down when they get to a stop sign or turn right on a red light. It really pisses me off because I'm often a pedestrian as well and I really get aggravated by people who don't stop when turning right at a red. I've almost been hit a few times because the other driver sails through the crosswalk while trying to quickly beat the traffic coming from the left. This is why police ticket "rolling stops".... cause the guy that turns the corner at 20kph on a red could say it was a rolling stop.... where do you draw the line?

Yeah, good luck for you with no ticket. A friend of mine got this rolling stop ticket on the motorcycle - didn't put his foot on the ground! Good ballance and full stop doesn't count with both feet on pegs!

About a year ago I was parked up literally 2-3 feet infront of a stop sign just off of Erin Centre blvd near Queen st. I was parked there for a good 4-5 minutes doing various stuff inside of my car (looking for directions, looking for a lighter, etc). Once I finished everything I had to do and figured out where I was going, I decided to just rolll through the stop sign, considering that it was around 3am and I'd already been stopped there for a good 5 minutes. Surely after I rolled through it and got to the lights, the vehicle that had appeared behind me by that time started looking more and more like a cop. Then once I made a left hand turn onto Queen, I saw the flashing lights. FML.
Moral of the story - just stop for the damn sign. 2 seconds of your life could save you $125 and a few demerit points.

I admit I'm lucky not to get a ticket. I didnt even realize it was such a serious offense. I usually don't come to a complete stop but I slow enough to go into first (manual) and off the clutch without any rev matching or stuttering, so really at like 2-3km/h. No sidewalk at the location, it was midnight and I signaled and had a clear view each way. I didn't even think anything of it when I did it, I was just surprised this morning when I looked up to see what the fine on rolling a stop was and saw that it was 3 points!

Is rolling a stop sign different than running a stop sign in Ontario??
Here they are the same thing we get a wick fine of 300 bucks and 3 demerits. REgardless if you run a sign and tbone someone or go through one in the middle of the night with no one around and you are going 10km/h.
Cops fail to realize the difference and again will continue to let the bad drivers kill and mangle innocent people on the road all in the name of generating revenue.

Guess i will be taking this one to court, not sure what to say it would be my word against the officer.
I should clarify, when he said i rolled a stop i was trying to make a right turn on a red light! Red lights are to be treated as stop signs correct, when making a right? Anyhow i thought i did stop he thought it wasn't long enough.
2 cops had a line of 6 cars waiting they had us all pulled over and were taking their sweet time passing out fines to each.

Don't police cruisers have dash cams. Which in this case could prove you rolled through?

Stop signs with a white border are optional. You treat them like yield signs. I like to call them Stop-tional.

technically you were supposed to stop at the line for 3 seconds which gives you enough time to check to see if the intersection is clear and then proceed.
Fight the ticket to get a reduced fine. That is what i did when i got the same ticket..except i apparently ran a red light even though it was still amber.

I didn't roll through a red light, I made a right turn at a red and the officer said i did not stop "i rolled it", which i don't think i did.
I am not sure if a dash cam was on, or even if his car was pointing in the direction that i turned from.
If i went to court, could i request dash cam video as part of disclosure from the prosecutor?

depends if you fully stopped behind the white line. and advanced forward because there was no pedestrians. inched forward and saw no traffic and went for it.

Don't think this will help you. It would be too easy to get away with any ticket if that was the case

Well, let's see what happens. will go next week for a court date.
a friend of mine who is with a police dept basically told me it'll get reduced, but for insurance purposes, key is to delay the court date as much as you can.
Apparently if something is going to be on your record for 2 years, it is based on 2 years from the date of offence once convicted. So if you can delay your court date for up to a year (just an example) and you get convicted, it's on your record for a year only, since you have been convicted one year after your offence date.

Shows up from your conviction for insurance and will be on your record for 3-6 years.
Cases sometimes takes two years to complete the trial, by that logic, it may never show up.
Also, if insurance really want to, they can find a lot more than what is on your abstract.

It is on your abstract from the date of conviction.
So if you get the ticket in January, and then goto trial and get convicted in October... that just means you essentially wasted 9 months the ticket could have been already on your record that whole time.
Trust me I'm speaking from experience here, still have another month until the ticket is finally off my record, a full year almost longer than it could have been if I had just paid.
This is why I tell people to just pay their tickets if its something they KNOW they are guilty of (IE: speeding, or this)
I got a warning from the cops about rolling a stop sign on my bicycle......
Same while riding downtown
But as for the rolling stops they just piss me off, While riding I've almost been hit at least 10 times or so and actually hit twice. the first one bent my wheel and sent me crashing to the ground, 2nd time I barely stopped when i got to the car but because I was clipped in I lost my balance and my handlebar dug a nice line into his hood. He was pissed, I told him to call the police and explain why his car is stopped in the crosswalk (not as kindly of course) after a while he got in his car and left.
But yes, I have 0 sympathy, sorry like -10 sympathy for anyone who gets dinged for rolling stops or running redlights/stop signs..etc there is 100% no excuse for it, even more so when people don't know how to use a stop sign and just blow right through it, it's funny how mad someone can be when they can't see my Orange Car, or my Yellow riding jersey but can see my finger in the air. Part of me just wants to pick up a clunker and let these people hit me

Well atleast i can argue for a reduced fine :)
Rolling a stop... yes bad, goin straight through a red... yes bad.
I admit i may not have stopped long enough while making my right on the red, but honestly as i approached i did make sure there was no on comming traffic.
Anyways it is what is it. Just gotta take it like a man lol

OP, take it to court...request disclosure. No dashcam, it's your word against his...either way when you get there you'll notice theres a lineup of people infront of you with the same ticket you have getting offered no points and naming of "fail to yield" for their abstract and/or a reduced fine.

Just make sure you look around before you roll through. I don't even bother stopping for the ones at mall parking lots if it is dead.
