View Full Version : Engine takes too long to get up to speed

I've got a 2006 gt hatch and I'm noticing every time I press the gas the engine takes so long to get up to speed, my foot on the pedal feels like I'm on forth gear off a green light and there is more vibration on the pedal than normal. Not sure if anyone has had this problem and has a fix for it

with the heat and humidity its normal. The computer can only compensate so much

Mines the same way. humidity really pulls back on these motors. However last week i thought to myself "wow motors really pulling hard" then this heat showed up. That ended that fun :D

Good thing - i was jut thinking the same thing, it's like starting in 2nd sometimes...

Yeah, if it's only happening in the hot weather it's normal. The hot air is far less dense, which equals less oxygen in the engine and less power. On a positive note, this also means increased fuel economy as the ECM has to decrease the amount of fuel to keep the stoichiometric ratio.

Try disconnecting the battery to reset the comp.
PS- WES why spelled wesley in katakana?
i thought it was just me! SRI+Hot humid weather doesn't really work very well

Naah computer's fine - with cooler weather and the a/c off it does just fine (or once it's up to speed - but starting up a hill it feels weak)
Wesley would make sense if that was my name right? :) I think I may have to learn some Korean - easy language from what I hear. (vs Japanese and especially Chinese)

How about to try octane boost/premium whenever hot and humidity.

What is the benefit to the op if he runs higher octane?

+1 and instant respond up to speed.

The OP's car is tuned for 87. Adding 91-94 will result in nothing except wasting money. Higher octane fuel does not mean higher power. Higher octane fuel is designed to help prevent ping / knock. If the OP's issue was ping / knock then I would agree that moving to higher octane would help.

Have you try it yet???? I did and it responds mavelous when you have an A/C on, like coupe day ago whenever you pass another car. Sometime, gas station ran out of regular and they replace regular with premiun. Try it for yourself for one tank whenever the weather outside is really hot and sticky then you will understand what I say.

I'm not saying you're not right in your assessment , however, I won't believe it until I see data. Show me a dyno graph, AFR's, accurate engine temps, etc, then I'll believe it. Unfortunately I can't compare my car to yours as my ECU is already tuned for high octane.

Sorry, I don't have any data for it and I also use mostly regular gas. once a while, I fill up with premiun then I have noticed different especilly when A/C is on. On Hwy, the car will be jerk/shudder (I'm not sure what to say) with regular when it's hot and sticky but it's smooth respond acceleration when fill up with premium.

running higher octane is better for your engine in general, runs smoother and cleaner. additives are not good for your engine. regardless of size and power. no its not a necessity like more powerful engines but it is better and does improve how well your engine runs. im not saying your going to get power gains, but again makes it run better or last longer even.

Its a mazda 3, the car is just slow.... boost it or stay in 2nd and 3rd gear at all times!

same .. the thick, damp fog this morning didn't help .. day before, i was enjoying a nice drive before work. Car isn't exactly pulling hard but it was ok for drive, stopped at a light, hit the throttle and it bogged hard and threw a cel .. i do have an sri but notice on not so hot and humid days the car just performs awesome..

more vibration than normal means something isn't right... forget what everyone says about the heat... it doesn't make the car a complete slug just because of hot weather! you're not describing well what's going on so it's best for you to bring it to a shop as its hard to diagnose problems over the internet

The Issue with the SRI can usually be a leak in the assembly, tighten everything, I even went as far as using Blue Gasket-maker to seal the entire assembly, and that fixed my problem. Mazda had noticed the code thrown was that the car was running rich under acceleration, this was due to the air hitting the MAF in an odd way. A leak causes disturbance in the air-flow and may cause such a CEL and issue.
Hot and especially humid weather affects our cars, feels like no matter how much you stomp on the gas, the car refuses to get to a higher RPM. It's like a torque thief.
I use premium at all times in my MZ3. I find it affects engine heat, but it does run smoother, and cleaner. Call it a placebo effect, but there is a slight upgrade in 3rd gear acceleration when using high octane fuels in our cars, or so I find.
