OK, this might be a stupid question. When you guys are driving in the city, do you guys ever use the 6th gear? Does it help save gas or is it just going to strain the motor?

Thanks.

I never use 6th gear, even on the highway. Also, a big debate, but some people believe that stress on the engine at low rpm is what causes it to fail prematurely.

Yes/no depends upon the situation. If you are at 50kmph and in 6th you are definitely going to load your engine on any type of incline.

Keep in mind that 120 km/h and 6th gear puts you at 3000rpm.

Personally I wouldn't get to sixth in city traffic. Most likely I'm in 3rd or 4th. I find I tend to change around 3k-4k rpms for normally driving. If you are getting to 6th you must be at 1500rpm, which is really too low with any load. I might get to 5th in a high speed area. On the highway, I'm defiantly going into 6th but I'll drop to 5th for passing.

Cool, thanks for the tips. I figured that 6th doesn't make much sense. Good to know that I'm not the only one that spends most of my time in 4th gear when I'm driving city.

I'll pop into 6th gear anytime I'm cruising >80km/h. If I need to accelerate again, I'll go back into 5th or 4th if needed and do so.

Hence why I said depends on the situation. Bypass roads intown are fast moving and are 80s, I might get into 6th on those.

I'll cruise in 6th in an 80-zone or higher. Not in the city.

usually when going over 80kms/h, try to avoid that engine stress

What engine stress?

I put 6th gear when cruising over 85km+ not all the time, but depends on the situation.

So 6th gear, going 85+, nice.

But it also depends on the situation

I put it in 6th when cruising at 70km/h or faster. Any acceleration and I'll drop it to 3rd or 4th or whatever the appropriate gear is. 97,300 kms so far and all is well.

I guess most of you who try to avoid 6th don't know anything about transmissions and gear ratios. Doing 120 at 6000 rpm is awesome in 5th, a real gas saver too!

I think you mean 120 at 6k in 3rd. *sarcasm noted*

Lol yea really, eh. There's no point at all cruising at 80km/h in 5th. The car will pull just fine like any other around 1800rpm at 70km/h. Hell, my dad's Yaris even revs that low at 70. If a 106 hp car can do it, why do people think the MS3 can't?
