So this weekend my friend and I were doing a sub install on my car, he did a great job - we had everything clean with all wires hidden under the seat or under the plastic panels and scuff plates. Sounds pretty good inside the car and no rattling or anything outside the car - exactly what i wanted. so we went to a bar to grab a few drinks to chill after , and im feeling good driving home with some good tunes bumping in my car

this morning i go to my car to load my laptop in for work and I see:

ugh my friend must have dropped something on my car while we were working. so i thought. i try cleaning it off with my finger, nothing. the red seems be pretty into the paint. then i take a close look ....

http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/4781/dsc04459y.th.jpg (http://img811.imageshack.us/i/dsc04459y.jpg/)

http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/6329/dsc04460fk.th.jpg (http://img693.imageshack.us/i/dsc04460fk.jpg/)

[http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/6915/dsc04461q.th.jpg (http://img155.imageshack.us/i/dsc04461q.jpg/)

WTF! someone must have hit my car pulling out of the parking lot last night, I've got red from the car and blue from the plate, not to mention my own plate is totally effed up now

So I went to a couple of places and they quoted me around 420-450 for a new aftermarket bumper painted. Would I need to get a new bumper? Or can this one be salvaged and repainted?

that sucks man, too bad you never see it happen... some moron reversed into the front of my car last week and busted my front plate cover off and cracked my license plate mount, also left stress cracks all in the paint under the plate mount. i was so pissed.

Although it doesn't appear to have been hit hard as in high speed, I'd still replace it. Honestly, my advice is to file through your insurance co. The cost you were quoted will go up if the foam support underneath was damaged. I have a sunlight silver bumper skin from my 05 that needs to be repainted and possibly a little body work (I was tapped from behind). PM me if you're interested.

BTW, it looks like a glancing blow; like someone hit your car at a perpendicular angle. Any driveway across the street from where you parked?

That sucks! Hopefully you can get it fixed quick.

Check out your options for replacement parts through our affiliate dealers. You would be surprised in the cost of a new bumper (meaning not so bad). I had my rear bumper cover replaced by Uni-body and their price for a used replacement was more expensive than a new one from MOT. :loco

I actually had smaller damage than that done to my original rear bumper and was told that it would never look as good if they tried to repair it. Ended up getting the Speed3 bumper used. The foam insert was around $65 if I'm not mistaken.

Check with Richard @ Street Performance and he'll be upfront on the bumper and a price if it can be fixed.

usually.. for rear bumpers.. most shops try not to take it because it's plastic.. and there's chance of cracking when they fix it.

But for a damage like that.. I say take it to richard also... he can quote you by looking at it.. and he has never gone over his quote once with me :)

Have you tried talking to your insurance? Some policies do not penalize you for hit & runs.

+1 on going to see Richard at StreetPerformance. My parent's Camry is currently there getting basically the entire driver side repaired because it got backed into. After that I will be taking my 3 there to get my rear bumper that I got used painted to match the rest of the car.

i was probably hit in the parking lot where i was that night
its a big piss off because there were only 5 or so cars in the lot and they STILL managed to hit my car....im pretty sure i know who from the bar did it too, bunch of 50 year old old guys were really wasted and yelling at each other and the waitress

i dont want to go through insurance...i already had to put in two other claims this year (one my fault, one is not). this has been a really bad year for driving for me.....

i feel your pain bro

yeah i checked with them and their quote was in the price range i mentioned in my original post

so i hopped onto Kijiji and found this:
http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-auto-parts-tires-auto-body-parts-Mazda-3-white-rear-Bumper-W0QQAdIdZ214833054

i emailed the guy and he said that the bumper might fit both sedan and hatchback (i dont think he knows though, and neither do i lol)
would anyone be able to tell? or are they actually interchangable?
http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/8846/mazda3bumper1.th.jpg (http://img834.imageshack.us/i/mazda3bumper1.jpg/)

also his asking price is a bit recidulous since i can get a new bumper painted for that price but if it fits then maybe i can negotiate something

Bumpers are not interchangeable between sedan and hatch.

ok thanks for letting me know
would a 05 bumper fit an 07?

Yes and no. The way I understand it is the shape of the foam backing is different. You will be able to install an 05 bumper on your's, but you also will need a new foam backing piece.

Not too expensive for a rear bumper!? When I got hit from behind (very minor damage but enough that it could not be fixed), the cheapest thing I could find new was like $700, that includes the bumper (~300), the paint (~250), the installation (~100) b4 tax. Mazda was charging even more (I think closer to $850). Then you look to scrap yards and you are lucky to find the same model/colour as yours and they will still sell the bumper cover for like $350.

Hey Krazy, since I sold my rims I decided to just get a new bumper entirely
I put a deposit down for Chipmaster in Markham today to do jsut the bumper for now
I'll post pics once it's done

BTW has anyone called "Kevin the dent guy" this year? Chipmaster estimated $90 for each dent, 2 total (i figured I'd get it all done at the same time)
If he's still doing it, I don't mind organizing a group meet to have some work done

just wanted to post an update
i got my car fixed today finally
Chipmaster ordered and painted the wrong bumper at first, I kinda feel bad for the guy actually he probably didin't make much money (if any) off me after that

overall the bumper seems pretty good, it fits 95% perfect (you can notice the gaps arn't exactly the same but i could try and fit it again)
Paint job had very small missed spots along the edges but its barely noticeable
i have to wait until sunlight to see how good the color match is though, but im pretty pleased with it overall and would recommend Chipmaster Markham
The owner Ron is a really nice guy and kept apologizing about the wrong bumper
