Wouldn't your school not be able to provide you with any references for specific companies willing to take on an intern?

Yah seriously... what school do you go to? Usually they have a list of popular firms that are willing to take on students...... and then you gotta FIGHT your peers for the best placement muahahhaha :chuckle

3 weeks? it will be hard for anyone to hire for such a short duration.
are there any specific criteria? like it has to be a dedicated firm? or as long as it is graphic design work?

Well it's minimum three weeks....And I can't be working alone, I need at least one more person to coach me.
If it doesn't have be a specific firm, and you just need to be coached by a designer as a criteria, send me your info and I'll ask my sister to see if anything is available at her workplace as they have a design group, but it's not a firm.

I would try going for a design firm first, just because you get more creative freedom. You need to be building a portfolio right now to show what you're capable of... not sitting in a cubicle slapping the same logo on every piece you create.... (cuz chances are you'll probably be doing that for the rest of your life if you don't get your foot in the door while you're still young, fresh and full of ideas!)
Seriously, get a list of all the firms in Toronto and start cold calling. As well, try getting in touch with Creative Niche too... they're a placement agency and have the contacts of every single agency in the GTA.

While I agree with what you said, sometimes you have to take whatever you can get just because there is nothing else despite the cold calls and such. Especially if you are on a time crunch. And in her situation, is she going to hold out 1 month? 2 months? 6 months? a year? for only a CHANCE of getting into said firms? Or do what is necessary now to complete her education requirements wihtout delay? Hard choices to be made!

Well, usually if you don't end up with a placement the remaining students spend that duration in-class doing work for an actual client that the prof arranges for. At least, that's how it worked at my school, hers might be different. Still better than most in-house positions IMO! :chuckle
There's also HUNDREDS of design firms in Toronto. So unless she really sucks, I'm sure she'll do just fine ;) lol

haha.... yeah, I'm just throwing another perspective in there. Though might not be valid because I'm totally not in the field.
So I defer to your judgement! lol

I used to know a guy who did graphics design for stores such as Goodfoot, StolenRiches, LiveStock, and various other boutiques down along Queen St. These are all boutiques in the downtown core specializing in sneakers and clothing. I think he only did freelance work though, but I'm not 100% sure as it was a while back...

Arcade Agency? Small firm. Don't think they are taking interns atm. They were pretty stacked the last time I checked.

Has to be an unpaid 3 week internship (minimum). After that it's fair game.

Give Entro Communications a call. My GF for internship there a month ago and afterwards they hired her with a contract.
