So I am currently with Rogers using an iphone 3G (with no data plan), and in the next few weeks I am going to upgrade to a new phone and sign up for a data plan. I am stuck between the Torch 9800, HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S, or iPhone 4. I have a lot of friends on bbm so I am leaning towards the Torch 9800, but what is your opinion?

I'm (unfortunately?) a fandroid so I say Desire or Galaxy. ^_^
I wouldn't really base my phone purchase on the fact that 'my friends have one' - in ref to your 'leaning towards the Torch' comment.
Maybe go in to a store, try them out, and see which feels better?

True say, btw I never used an android phone before... can you fill me in on why it is such a good OS?

It's a good OS depending on your needs... I'm hugely against proprietary software and OS' like BB OS 6 and iPhone with it's new OS 4 hold me back tremendously when I want to mod something in my phone. Then again I studied computer programming in college, so it's mostly a personal pref.
If you stop into a store, they should have no qualms about letting you try out the phone prior to purchase, since how else can you be sure that's the phone you want if you're trying to choose between a bunch of different models?
BB OS 6 is new, but still stable (from what I've read). iPhone OS 4 is stable & now has the multi threading capability which is pretty sweet for an iPhone. Android is not as stable as the others but allows you to do a bit more of what you want if you want to do so...

Hmmm.. I see, the Samsung Galaxy S does sound very appealing. With it's high res (bigger) screen and powerful processor. Also swipe typing is an interesting idea, and it has free google GPS.
BTW does anyone know how long the rogers $30/6Gb deal will go on for?

Swype is such a sick app, seriously.
All current Android phones I'm aware of are GPS ready.. I have yet to see one that is not...
I forget who, but there's someone on the forums that works for Robbers that should be able to answer your question maybe soon-ish. :)

I'll lay the Pros/Cons for you from experience and you can decide...
BlackBerry: Great for email and BBM, very boring platform with a lack of good apps. For example the Facebook App is lackluster compared to the iPhone/Android.
Android: Great platform for a technically inclined user who likes to customize and modify their phone with home brewed apps. I personally find the software great, but the hardware is lackluster in terms of design (compared to Apple and RIM)
iPhone/iOS: Great platform that "just works", email has been greatly improved. Great web kit browser, if jail broken, you can have an app for practically anything and app support is the widest and well done
I personally have had 4 BlackBerry's (8310, 8900, 9000 and 9700), 3 iPhones (3G, 3GS and 4) and an XPERIA X10 demo from work. Plus I've tried the 9800 before it was released and the software platform is still a business platform even though the interface has been eye candied to catch up to iOS and Android. From going through all these phones, the platform that really works for me all around has been the iPhone platform.

By far, get the HTC desire
I just bought a Bold 9700 last night as my 8330 curve is on it's way out. I would have bought the desire if I was not on construction sites all the time. Touch screen phones do not last well in my line of work. The only thing that lasts are blackberrys unfortunately. Iphone 4 is a boo boo and the HTC desire really really is a wicked phone. I have buyers remorse but I know I just couldn't have the desire for long without replacing screens over and over. I love Blackberry but since I have a serperate work phone I was hoping to be able to get someone with a little more speed and tinkering ability. I researched for days and days and the HTC Desire came out on top for me every time.
I guarantee none of the touch screen phones will last a whopping 2 years like my trusty curve has, and my 8703e did. I don't even want to know how many phones my employer has had to replace in the lifetime of those 2 phones.
Next time I'll get an android phone or something...2 years from now i hope LOL!

There are lot's of reviews out there...
I will be replacing my phone soo, so I have been investigating the Galaxy S, the Desire, and even the Legend.
iPhone is nice, but I dislike the close O/S. A bunch of people out there like the Galaxy's specs, but are leery about buying something from Samsung because of the company's poor track record for upgrades and support.

I would disagree on both fronts. I have had my BB 9700 since the second day Bell carried the product. I have had 2 do battery pulls twice, and have not encountered other errors. I am a very heavy user, and also use many applications.

The iPhone 4 is a boo boo because of the mentally retarded mistake they made with the antenna....watch youtube videos of it. I have personally witnessed a friends iPhone do this... Apple's fix? offer a free rubber bumper skin so your hands don't short out the antenna.
On top of that a bunch have complained of defective screens with a yellow tinge to them. Apple claims it will go away eventually...
Apple screwed up huge! one of thier big wigs form IBM resigned over it...but was more than likely told to hit the road lol. Supposedly the developers were required to use a rubber skin to conceal the appearance of the iPhone 4 during development so the problem was not noted until the day of it's release.
Battery pulls? once in a while with blackberry but they are by FAR the most stable phones I have ever ever used. I am a heavy BB user also. My curve is 2 years old and required 2 or 3 battery pulls. My frigging ipod has required MANY hard boots and it is less than a year old. iPhones are not as stable as any RIM device IMO.
Blackberry build quality is second to none...ONLY phones I can't regularly break! dollar for dollar the blackberry will be one of the cheapest phones you will ever own as it will last and last. Battery life is incredible on the 9700 as well. Can't wait for mine to arrive.

i don't have much to offer but to say the HTC Desire is awesome.
I had a chance to hold and play with my friends the other day and it is extremely WELL built and very solid.
A bit on th heavy side but nothing too heavy compared to the iphone
the samsung is nice too but is nowhere close to as sleek as the desire. screen seems a bit dingy and not bright enough either.
personally I wouldn't mind venturing into the realm of HTC if it wasn't for BBmessenger.
I realize there are substitutes like google talk and etc but somehow bb messengers's simplicity and reliability are pretty good to me
when it comes time to upgrade i'll be considering either android or blackberry again.
i still like the tactile feel of buttons... don't know why..

I think I've done over 50 battery pulls on my bold 9000. It started to get slow and laggy near the end. It took a beating and the only thing to mess up is the trackball , which is fixed with the trackpad with the 9700. The apps on BB suck. The os is dated. Email and bbm are the only things worth mentioning.
IPhone 2g > samsung instinct > curve 8830 > bold 9000 > iPhone 4
Don't think I will ever part with the iphone again. Played with the galaxy before getting the iPhone , I really liked it but I find android os a little too overwhelming sometimes.

Oh yeah, surfing the net on a BB is so painful it's not even worth doing.

I agree that Blackberry has some SERIOUS catch up to do in terms of the browsing experience and the OS in general. Not very rewarding experience.
I wish I got the HTC instead!
BBM is awesome though!
Another note....WTF were they thinking with the "Torch". That phone is a band aid that isn't going to help their cause.

I hope you enjoy the 9700. I've grown to hate BlackBerry's now, they used to be #1 in my books. I had my 9700 replaced 5 times (build quality every time), my 9000 3 times, and my 8900 2 twice.
My experience went like this: Nokia N95 --> BB 8310 --> BB 9000 --> iPhone 3G --> BB 8900 --> iPhone 3G[S] --> BB9700 --> iPhone 4.
Every time I left the iPhone I regretted it, and I think I have settled on the fact that I will never own another RIM product, they rehash the same formula and release it as a new phone. Sure Apple does the same thing, but they add a "twist" to it and the build quality is consistent.
Mind you, this iPhone 4 antenna issue is way overblown and I have yet to see my iPhone 4 lose a data connection or a phone call. I've already used it for 10 hours of talk time and 2GB+ of data on 3G since launch. This issue plagues people in very low reception areas hence why people on AT&T are bitching and complaining.
Having worked in wireless for 2 years, I can't even explain to you how many BlackBerry's come for servicing and returns due to build quality. iPhones and Android phones were rarely returned/serviced.
Its all about what kind of experience you've had with these devices and manufacturers.

for Blackberry, you guys know that you can do key strokes versus actually pulling the battery... press left [alt], right [shift] (the [aA] key) and [del]; it resets the phone for you, similar to battery pull

I work in low reception areas all the time so the iPhone issue worried me. I did consider getting an iPhone 4. I will just get an ipod touch for the car/wifi and keep the BB for a phone. I also like the tactile feel of a full qwerty as well. I text/BBM a LOT. There is no perfect phone IMO. I'd love an HTC desire with a full solid feeling qwerty slide, similar to the motorolla milestone, but that phone feels very breakable.
Hard to get the best of both worlds. The torch won't be that answer either.

I have the Bold 9000 and it has worked great since Dec 2008. I have had to do battery pulls a few times but the worst part is since upgrading to OSv5, it takes 2 battery bars to reboot the device which sucks if you have a crash when your not near a charger as the phone is useless. BBM is the best but I wanted a touch phone and started looking at devices. I was looking at the Sony X10 but it seems big but cool because it has android but an old version. then I looked at the Iphone as why buy something thats always trying to compete with the Iphone but then it's impossible to get one unless you line up so I started looking at alternatives which is the Galaxy S and it looks great, has android which is open and will sync with all my goggle appz that I use everyday and it amazing but bit's longer then the Iphone 4 and my current phone which sucks as I don't want a big phone.
I am gonna try lining up this week and if I can't get the iphone 4, then I am gonna either get a Iphone 3Gs or the Galaxy S. I need a new phone now as it seems that if my phone is bumped like I put it down too hard or something, I have to do a reboot which kills my battery.

Anything but BlackBerry, launching a brand new phone like the Torch using last years technology doesn't say much about where RIM is headed. Add to that the BB OS6 is not supported by the Storm 2 a phone that launched about 8 to 10 months ago, is a major disappointment.
I have a BB9700 at the moment, its an ok phone overall, however my next phone will not be a BB, unless they make major strides in OS, hardware and UI development.
BB phones are generally underpowered and if you combine them with multi tasking and all the apps that you may want to run, its only a recipe for battery pulls and automatic phone reboots.
BB are using the BBM to their advantage at the moment, but thats about all that they are good for plus email. Apps are not their forte, unless App World 2.0 is a major development.
Time will tell.

Mine just lasted 2.5 days with a little bit more then moderate usage. It still had 44% left when I put it on charge last night. On days when I used it heavily (lots of game playing, app downloading, streaming video, etc.) it took 13-14 hours to get to around 25%.

Seriously? People are actually suggesting the Torch?
It might be the best Blackberry to date...but that isnt saying much as the OS has fallen way behind AndroidOS and iOS. The upcoming Windows Phone 7 is already looking much better...
As much as RIM is good at iterating its hardware...it is really bad at working on its software.
As an iPhone user myself...I can tell you that you will hate the Torch. BBM is just not worth it...

are u kidding me? ... first off you've most likely always been an apple fan boy and have never had a blackberry ... go try blackberry messenger and tell me you don't think its the best thing you have ever experienced on a phone... apple is trying so hard to implement something similar to their OS but most likely will never succeed.
Also who cares if the OS is not as good iOS and AndriodOS ... it does the job ... 95% of the businesses use it and has mostly likely never let them down....
those os's have alot of games and stuff ... why do you need games on your phone? get a console
those os's have alot of apps ... blackberry app world has apps that people would actually use in their everyday life ... they don't need farting apps
go try typing up an email / work file may it be excel, word, or powerpoint on an iphone or andriod and let me know if you succeed ...
a blackberry was always meant for people who need to get work done ... they just added these apps and games for these people who always complain ...
dont say the torch or any blackberry is a bad phone ..
especially if you have never had one ..
and please tell me one thing ... whats the diff between the old iphone and the new one?
front facing camera? hd video?
go buy a real camera if you want to use it for taking pictures and recording video ...
the os is the same shit as before ... i dont see no difference in it other then some new added garbage..
get a blackberry ... u wont regret it ...
o and one more thing .. what the big deal about pulling out a battery and putting it back in? u have to restarted the iphone when the dam thing freezes anyway so i dont see what people are trying to get at ... dont act like the iphone doesnt freeze ... you run a couple of apps (if it even has multi tasking now.. i dont think it does ) .. the stupid thing freezes

I've tried 4 different BlackBerry models and sold hundreds of them at work, and I think they are horrible products.
BlackBerry's cannot multitask without lagging or freezing. Their internet browser STILL has to catch up to Safari and the Android Browser.
RIM is a business platform and there are only 2 advantages to having a BlackBerry, BlackBerry Messenger (which I used to like and now HATE with passion) and E-Mail (Apple is slowly catching up with this segment with Microsoft Exchange).
The reason why I hate BBM is for two reasons, number one is that people take that shit too seriously, you open a message and read it and they expect you to respond immediately and if you don't they get all like WTF! WHY IGNORING :complain and then I hate it when I JUST met someone and they ask you for your PIN, how about NO.
Java is a slow language to have an OS based off, RIM needs to find a better coding language to work with.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, look at the commercials RIM is putting out on TV. All they advertise is BBM, its all they have going for them at this moment.

It's been dropping wayy before this suadi fiasco. Use your BB to look that up! Oh wait, it would take you 2 hours and then require a battery pull. Eat it
It's gone from 150 to 60 ... and hasn't rebounded from highs more than a year ago.

go try typing up an email / work file may it be excel, word, or powerpoint on an iphone or andriod and let me know if you succeed ...
a blackberry was always meant for people who need to get work done ... they just added these apps and games for these people who always complain ...
dont say the torch or any blackberry is a bad phone ..
especially if you have never had one ..
and please tell me one thing ... whats the diff between the old iphone and the new one?
front facing camera? hd video?
go buy a real camera if you want to use it for taking pictures and recording video ...
the os is the same shit as before ... i dont see no difference in it other then some new added garbage..
get a blackberry ... u wont regret it ...
o and one more thing .. what the big deal about pulling out a battery and putting it back in? u have to restarted the iphone when the dam thing freezes anyway so i dont see what people are trying to get at ... dont act like the iphone doesnt freeze ... you run a couple of apps (if it even has multi tasking now.. i dont think it does ) .. the stupid thing freezes
you sound like tha fanboy. and to quickly call him a fanboy...wow
It's been dropping wayy before this suadi fiasco. Use your BB to look that up! Oh wait, it would take you 2 hours and then require a battery pull. Eat it
+1
doing things in the BB takes so much effort. Especially webbrowsing

I've owned 2 Blackberry's and 2 iphone's
For my needs (surf web, games, useful apps, music, movies), the iphone wins. I love BBM and it's hard to get back into text messaging, but I'll survive.
exactly my point .. blackberry was never meant to be used for these kinds of things ... so why would you buy a blackberry? stick with the iphone ... thats what it was made for ... but why would you bash the blackberry just because it cant do those things? it was never meant to ..

i also notice your sig has fb twitter and email ...how long does it take for you to type something up on an iphone in one of those applications?
please dont say a touchscreen is easier to type on rather then a physical keyboard..
I type faster and with less errors on my iPhone than I did on any of my BlackBerry's. I can also text a lot easier/safer while driving a lot easier on my iPhone(s), its hard to believe but its true. (I know I don't text while I drive but I do respond the quick "I am driving." when I get a call.)
Also, I do hate to give my PIN to some random girls, because its those girls that are like OH MY GOD!!! YOU HAVE A BLACKBERRY!!! ADD ME ON BBM!!!111 that are drama queens and take shit out of context when you don't reply or something along those lines. I'd rather only give my PIN to people I know very WELL, but its hard when people put you on the spot and ask you to add them, it kills me.

hahaha yet i dont use my phone to reply to you on this forum because thats not what i use my phone for ... as you can see i have specfic needs for my phone and the blackberry is great in doing all those ...
i dont need movies or music .. i have an ipod for that .. web browsing? .. i look up the news and it takes me a second to do so ... i dont need no crazy ass browser which includes shit that i dont use
i pull my battery out once a week due to alot of applications running in the background ... y do you act like the iphone doesnt ever freeze or get slow?
just cause the battery pull senario is popular on the blackberry doesnt mean you have to talk about it when talking about blackberry 24/7 .. im sure if the iphones battery came out ( which it doesnt and when it dies i hope you crack your screen trying to get that peice of shit open ) ... then will see whos talkin shit ...

i could say the same thing about any person who has posted in this thread bashing the BB .....
i guess alot of people now feel better about buying a andriod or an iphone since they are bashing the torch?
I didn't see much bashing of BB. More so people stating BB's limitations. You've repeated those limitations.
Anyways, I have the iPhone 4 and I haven't dropped a call yet. I'm not using a case either. So while the antenna issues are valid, they were definitely overblown by the media in my opinion.

lol calm down dude, every one has their choice, all devices have their positives and negatives, RIM at the moment is seriously lagging behind, I asked someone I know, who works for RIM why the Torch had last years processor and crap screen resolution, all he could say was he didn't know why, and he has had a prototype of the BB device for a very long time now.

hey guys,
you guys are forgetting abt the people that cant afford data plan. I am a wireless user thats on pay as you go and all my buddies use feature phones.I believe feature phones are the most reliable out there. they rarely freeze up and are usually very durable. Alot of these smart phones have large screens that can easily be broken when dropped and therefore will cause alot of problems down the road. Cellular telephones are meant to call and occasionally send/recieve text messages. I have an old samsung flip phone that has lasted me over 4 years and is still going strong. The internal motor inside my phone seems like it has alot of life in it, maybe pushing past the 300,000 minute mark. you guys can argue all day long abt which smartphone is superior, but in my honest opinion feature phones are the most reliable when it comes down to talking to your buddies. I have a laptop that i use to play games and surf the web when im on the go ( only when wifi is available).
So guys can we please get along?! we are the Mazda super crew and we should all learn to accept the fact that barack osama is always right!
Thats my cool story.
Thank you

Hmm, very interesting lol.
After some research this is my conclusion:
As of now, I am very interested in what the Galaxy has to offer, it is indeed a great phone but as people in this post have said, Samsung has poor customer support which could be a problem later on. The HTC is a great android phone but falls behind the Galaxy due to a very short battery life and availability with Rogers (the carrier that I intend to stay with).
The BB Torch falls behind in hardware and software, the new OS is a great improvement but is still no where as good as the iOS and the android, also it seems as though RIM has half A$$ED this phone... QVGA screen..No HD video recording... No HTML5, No 1Ghz processor. With that said I like BBM a lot and it is indeed very addicting, also it uses 1/3rd of the data compared to other smartphones, it also sends emails and text very efficiently.
My top choice as of now is the iPhone 4 it is a great all around phone with its only major flaw being the antenna design but IMO that is not that big of a deal, I also qualify for HUP with rogers and I recently signed a sick retention plan :) The only question now is if I can get one before sept 30th so that I can get that $30/6Gb deal and the free case. In the end it is just a phone and I am not willing to line up 4 hrs to get it and at this rate, the supply and demand problem probably won't calm down until after sept 30th....

Bell has the 6GB offer at the moment, and is offering to let customers share that data with an iPad for $10 a month compared to ROGER's $20.
There are many advantages of going with ROGERS over Bell and Telus, specially with GSM/HSPA+ devices.

I'm a little biased towards BB, only because I've been so used to them, starting with the 7xxx series (waaay bback when the screens were black and white)
However after using the ipad for a number of weeks, I'm beginning to really enjoy the touch screen aspect of. The iphone4, with the really nice looking screen and great apps are beginning to really sway my opinion towards apple.
I'm due for an upgrade so before making a call, I'm going to check out the torch. One thing I don't like is the fact that the screen is not "HD" in terms of todays standards with regards to smartphones. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but it's one x towards it. I would like to try out OS6 as well as I heard some pretty good things about it.
Either way, I'm going to wait it out a bit longer. Would like to try both phones side by side before making the jump.
Besides... I friggin love typing on a keyboard. Especially BB keyboards. :)

I'd say go with the Galaxy S. When you look at the whole package, it matches up very well to the iPhone, and does things the iPhone can't do. Like divx and Flash support. Also if you travel a bit, you'll appreciate the Galaxy S supports TV out via micro USB to HDMI cable or a composite cable that connects to the headphone jack.
The Best Buy at Bay And Dundas has an iPhone 4 and a Galaxy S demo models if you want to do a head to head comparison. The Future Shop at Yonge and Dundas has the HTC desire and Galaxy S.
Also read the reviews out there. Tons of head to head comparisons of the phones you're looking for.

I'd rather not have a phone then have to use a BlackBerry again. The Torch is horrible, look at the sales so far...they've already slashed the price down to $99. I called this one before they launched it, the day I tried it back in May, I knew it was going to be a FAIL.

Speaking of the Galaxy S, I tried it the other day. I had my iPhone 4 and the Galaxy S side-by-side. The screen is just as nice as the iPhone 4 in terms of resolution, but the color looked miles ahead on the iPhone 4, then I tried the browsers on both on similar sites. The sites loaded faster on the iPhone 4, and once both loaded the Galaxy S lags when you scroll around the pages. Aesthetically speaking the Galaxy S was boring too.
Honestly, if I were to get an Android. I'd get the Nexus One.

I didn't go that into depth but my friend has a Galaxy S and we each tried each others phones at a BBQ on Saturday (I have the iPhone 4). I found his touch interface to be a bit laggy compared to the iPhone and the interface wasn't as intuitive as the iPhone in a couple spots. An example was the camera. Sure it had all these options that the iPhone didn't have but you have to drill down and play with the settings to find anything (like using the front camera) unlike the iPhone default camera which was simple and had the basic needed features right there.
That being said, so far there's a few apps he has that I wish I had (not jailbroken as I made the mistake of going to 4.0.2) but other than that I'm happy with what I have.
