Hey Guys,
So the wife and I are headed to Paris in about a month. We both have iPhones (From Rogers if it matters).
The hotel charges $18Euro/day for wireless internet access.
Is it possible to unlock my phone, and use it in Paris on one of their providers? Is it possible to tether with my laptop also, while there?
If anyone has some options for me it would be greatly appreciated... :)

You can unlock it / jailbreak it. What version of iOS are you running? If you get a voice plan from a French carrier make sure it includes a data plan if you plan on tethering

I am only there for a week. A buddy said when he was in Greece he could buy a cheap plan to use for a few days.

ultrasn0w works. I hope you're not on iOS 4.0.2 with 3GS/4 (new boot rom) because they fixed the PDF exploit.

you can tether it with MYWI (15 day free trial from cydia)
if u need to get cydia on ur phone, (aka jailbreaking it - just go to the link on ur iphone and it will automatically do it)
http://jailbreakme.com/faq.html
JailbreakMe works on the device itself! Visit this website on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to get started.
What's a jailbreak?
A jailbreak is simply the ability to run apps and use themes and tweaks not approved by Apple. Jailbreaking doesn't slow down your device or use any extra battery. A jailbreak lets your device be how you want it.
How can I be sure I always can jailbreak in the future?
Firstly, don't update past 4.0.1, the last firmware JailbreakMe supports. Secondly, and arguably most importantly, allow Cydia to "make your life easier". This will allow you to always restore back to the latest firmware available when you select that option.

Simple process, if you have 4.0.1 or under. Go to Jailbreakme.com, let Cydia Install. Once Cydia installs, download Ultrasn0w which unlocks your phone. Once its unlocked you have the freedom to use it anywhere.
Also, a Jailbreak is out now for iOS 4.0.2.

Noob questions:
- Can I go back from Jailbreaking?
- Can I still use iTunes or will it no longer work?
- If I jailbreak, what CANT I do... like iOS updates?

you can use anything that u were able to use before, but now u can install 3rd party apps. U can always go back to "non-jailbreak" by restoring through itunes. As for update, it is better to check online before u do any major OS update, cause you may lose ur jailbreak because of it.

Don't update unless you know the jailbreak can be done, even the small patches like 4.0.2 made jailbreakme fail.
Yes you can use iTunes like normal.

1) yes, but remember to save your SHSH blob in Cydia (by clicking "Make my life easier" when you first launch it) or using TinyUmbrella (which will save the shsh to your local computer). download the firmware that the shsh is signed for, most likely 4.0.1. To backout of a jailbreak, you have to Restore the phone using iTunes. there are a bunch of tutorials out there outlining the process.
2) yes, iTunes will still work and you can still download stuff from the AppStore.
3) if you jailbreak, you can do iOS updates, but you lose the jailbreak and will have to re-jailbreak after the iOS update. If you have apps installed via Cydia, you will have to back them up somehow (tutorials on the web show how) prior to the update, then restore after the update -> jailbreak.
if you do jailbreak, change the device's root password. the Cydia page shows how.

Thanks guys!
Jailbroken, and DLed ultrasn0w. Ultrasn0w Installed and asked to reboot, which all went fine. Is there any way to tell that it installed properly? I know its not an executable type app, but I dont want a surprise in Europe.
Thanks!

IIRC Rogers has a temp international plan, for vacationers. But you'd have to call their C/S rep to confirm.
Otherwise - WiFi is internationally free. But make sure you turn off the 3G and the Data Roaming
Thanks guys!

Find a non Rogers sim card and pop it in and see if you can make a call, that way you know it's unlocked.

+1, it might be a little tricky and might require restarting your phone.

That's for sure, the baseband needs to be reloaded for it to take effect.
