Hey Guys.

After many many years of living in this house I have finally decided to upgrade our garage door.
Currently, Its a single car/single door garage, with a steel 1peice door. Its currently operated manually. As far as I can tell, the garage nor the door have ever been attached to a opener.

So basically, Im converting from an oldschool manual door to a more conventional garage door opener.
I take it that i would need the whole setup as the original door and hardware looks really dated and I dont think its worth salvaging.

Any recommendations on where to go? and How much it would cost... thats what im really worried about.
I'd like to get a basic door with multi panels so it rolls up, instead of swinging up. Nothing fancy really.

As for doors, the standard now is those aluminum insulated doors, very light. So for an opener, you wouldn't need more than 1/2 horse for something that size. Though MAKE SURE you get a BELT drive and not chain. Belts are extremely quiet compared to chain (good for sneaking out of the house). But are a little more pricy. Installation should run about $75+, Opener maybe around $300 for belt. Not sure about door prices.

You can always buy your stuff at HomeDepot or similar and pay someone to install them. Though buying installation and door opener and door from the same place should yield a better price. Also I heard you're supposed to stay away from CT's genie brand door openers, some installers won't even install those.

My dad purchased a Canadian belt driven unit 1/2hp for me for under/around $200 when it was on sale. it is a basic one with no features and two remote pads. Got it installed yesterday by two ghetto chinese workers in Markham for $70. Took 2 of them about 1.5 hour to finish

But my garage door are those new 4 pieces door, not sure if its the same with old 1 piece door.

You really have to shop around. Try Dodd's or Adams Doors.

As mentioned, belt drives are quiet. Chamberlin is the primary manufacturer of many models. While doing your research, check out the Homelink feature that you can use with a Homelink mirror. If you do not have any other door to get into the garage, you might want to look into the battery backup feature and or the emergency release lock cable that can be installed so that you're never locked out of the garage if there is a power out or something with the opener. The external keypad is also handy if you enter from outside say when doing yard work. Some of these now even have a finger scanner which reduces the need to key in your code.

Check out Garaga Inc. they have distributors across Canada and the USA. Their site is pretty neat you can build your own garage door and take a picture of your house and try your look out to get an idea of how it will look before buying. They also do the garage door installation too. Not too sure where you are located so you can choose one of these locations if one of them is close to you, or if you tell me where your located I can give you the site closest to you, they have almost 100 distributor locations?
