CN: A fool and his money are soon parted. These guys will lie to get the sale. Overall, bad experience.
The story is quite LONG, but bear with me because aside from doing a review, I am using it as a venting tool.
I tagged along with a friend, his mother, and his uncle to help negotiate a purchase on a Hyundai Elantra Touring GL (the hatch). I have tried to get them into a Mazda3 GX sport but they (his father) refuse to even look or consider any other alternative. Apparently, his father's co-worker has a hyundai and its apparently better quality than the Mazda. They think Mazda quality is suspect because one of their family members bought a loaded 2010 6 and has a few issues with it. It doesn't even have to be Mazda, they didn't look at the Matrix, or any other car in this segment (compact hatch). This is how stubborn headed they are, which obviously is a sign that its not going to go well.
Initial impression of the Elantra leaves a lot to be desired. Its not very stylish, practical but not stylish as the 3. The steering wheel feels like the lid of a stucco'ed rubbermaid box. The seats were ok, seemed to be more soft than the hard Mazda3 seats. The dash and door panel pieces where cheap plastic pieces that were as unimpressive as the 8th gen civics nasty plastics.
Going into the dealership, I've already researched how much one should be paying for the vehicle. A guy on RFD got $20940 OTR for the exact vehicle. No special grad thing or anything extra, and its around $300 markup.
Now, my friend's family has been there before. So they were greeted by their sales guy (asian guy name GEORGE) and immediately referred to the sales manager (RAYMOND CHOW) beacause the sales guy had another customer. My friend wanted a white on but understandably, the 2010's were low on stock of the white one. We were told that 2011 would be avaliable with no new changes to the new model year at the same price less a $1000 rebate.
If we get the 2010, he only had a grey and couple of reds in stock (not the color of choice)
Here's where the lies start. He says that he is no bs, he gives the best price, take it or leave it. He first tells us that for the 2011, the best price for that was to be $22,413. Ok, So asking if we forgo the white and get one of their remaining stock 2010 with a non preferred color, the best price is $21,800. Oh wait a minute, lets do a little math here, thats only a 600 dollar difference between the 2010 and 2011. Thats a whole $400 that he's swallowing from the rebate on top making $1100 on the sale itself.
All the while, saying that he here to make it simple, take it or leave it cause thats his best price. While he's doing this, he's making small talk with my friends mom, and I can tell she's not really knowing whats going on and she's just going along for the ride and answering to his compliments. Not a good sign.
We get the numbers, and think its a bit high so we walk out to be stopped by George the salesperson. He says that we shouldn't leave and that he will go to talk to the manager. Comes back with $21,500, and we tell him thats still to expensive. SO what does he tell my friends mom? Its expensive because theres a $400 dollar anti theft installed (in cantonese). Thats the exact words he used. Now obviously there is no such thing, and its actually $400 for etching. So this is where I get enough of the lies. I challenge him and tell him that its an optional thing and that we didn't want the etching. He gets agitated and tells me that he can't do that at first and you have to buy the car with it. I insist and for the remainder of the sale, he never directly talked to me again. He directed his attention to the mother and the uncle. I told them to walk at this point cause its obvious that they are trying to take advantage of them. But the mother and uncle is hanging around refusing to walk. They hang around waiting and making small talk, begging the salesperson for just a bit more. This obviously is a bad sign and something you should never do with a car purchase cause then they know they've got you.
So where it stands, from their last offer of $21500 tax in, if we take off $400 + tax for the unwanted etching, thats around $21050 right? WRONG! He goes back to talk to his manager. Comes back with $21400. Then its gets really stupid cause my friends uncle says that sounds almost fair however, they needed to budge just a little more but gave the salesperson his credit card BEFORE agreeing on the price. Final back and forth, settling on $21,200. I wanted to walk if they didn't do $21,000 because 1.) the color is not what they originally wanted 2.) I felt that the guy got defensive and agitated at me for challenging his lie and 3.) They lied multiple times.
Thats still a healthy $550 dollar profit as they approach the end of the month. Especially when I saw that they had a target of 125 cars on a board in the managers office and they had only managed to sell around half that by the 23rd approaching months end. I felt that they would be willing to do $21,000. But my friend's mom and uncle were ready to buy and who am I to try to stop them if they really want to part with their money?
Lastly, on the bill of sale I told them that they needed a stipulation saying that deal dependant on delivery before sept 3rd because they need it by the 6th to help my friend move back to university. The manager starts writing that on the bill of sale when the uncle chimes in and says that its ok, forget writting that, we trust you. OMG!!!
It was a very frustrating experience and I suggest that anyone on here thinking about a hyundai... hmmm genesis coupe... avoid kingscross hyundai or atleast be knowledgable and prepared before dealing with these guys.
/end rant.
