Here's the thing about 100mph. it doesn't seem like much. However, most passenger car tires aren't rated for this. Also, the shoulder of a freeway is notorious for having all kinds of loose gravel and tire shredding debris. We aren't talking about a professionally groomed track, or a prepped car. Driver probably didn't have much talent either...
