My best friend is looking to sell/give me his car, but he is no longer living in Canada.
Does anyone know the proper procedure to obtain this car?

Thanks.

Hm...I imagine he would have to just email or fax some signed papers to you...if he's giving you the car, you still have to pay taxes on it. Try giving them a call:

Questions? Call ServiceOntario's Driver and Vehicle Contact Centre:
Toronto Area: 416-235-2999
Toll Free: 1-800-387-3445 (Canada wide)

Info: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/used.shtml

I have no problems with paying taxes, but I need to find out how I or he would be able to obtain the used vehicle kit to sell the car to me.

just go to the service ontario kiosk with the VIN and you're set. You can do it yourself.

UVIPs are no longer available at ServiceOntario kiosks.

You can go into any Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Offices (http://www.ontario.ca/en/services_for_residents/STEL02_155833) with the VIN and request a UVIP.

In order to get the car, you will need:

1) your friend's signature in the Ownership Transfer section on the back of the ownership papers. (or the signature of the current owner of the vehicle)
2) your friend's signature will also have to be on UVIP. (or the signature of the current owner of the vehicle)

That is the only thing you'd need from your friend as the MTO needs those 2 documents to transfer the ownership to you. You will pay taxes on the Wholesale value of the car on the day you transfer the vehicle.

the other parts of the buying process are up to you (Safety cert and DriveClean test).

So technically, (other than the signatures) my friend doesn't have to be present in Canada to sell/give me his vehicle. Thanks MajesticBlueNTO.

Nope - as long as your friend signs the paperwork, you're fine. :) And really, the MTO would have no idea if you signed them on his behalf... Lol.

Jashik, I got my UVIP at Square One offices when I was selling my car, go early in the morning and you will be in and out within 10-15 min, otherwise, expect 30-45 min at the line up. UVIP is like $20 IIRC...

They are exactly $20. That's the law from when they first came out.
