THE TASK: I want to install a front-bumper parking sensor in my 2010 Mazda3 GTs.
This kit has a head unit, a “sensor” that sticks to the inside of the front bumper, and an on-off switch and beeper to be mounted in the cockpit.
I want to tap into the cigarette lighter wire for power, and install the on-off switch nearby on the side of the centre console.
The head unit must go in the engine well near the front bumper (it’s smaller than a pack of cigarettes, and can be secured with snap ties and mounting goo that comes in the kit).
QUESTION: Where can I route the wires from the cigarette lighter area through the firewall and out to the head unit near the front bumper? Is there an accessible port somewhere on the firewall? I don’t want to drill a hole or disturb sound insulation, etc.
BACKGROUND: I installed a rear-backup kit already, and I can now relax while my wife reverses into a parking spot! Now I want to protect the front bumper from parking lot dividers!
The rear unit gets power from the reverse light, so it’s off until you select reverse gear. The device starts to beep slowly when you’re ~ 3 feet from an object, and the beep gets faster as you move closer. It becomes a continuous tone when you get within ~ 12 inches. It’s invisible from outside the car. It even detects low concrete parking lot barriers and pedestrians walking behind the car. Not as good as a back-up camera, but the next best thing.
