Today, went to the gym with my buddy, and we decided to 'lift up the gate' to get into the parking lot, when we got back to the car, my buddy received a $250 parking ticket . violations description said : gate lifted by person - damage to equipment.
but the night before, we saw at least 7 cars went into the parking lot by lifting the gate. thats y we decided to do the same.
so my questions are , should he pay the ticket ? what can happen if he doesn't pay the ticket? (he does not go to that university)
It's a Municipal Charge.(government)
To renew the plates me must pay it. else they can put him into collections, and this can never expire, if they forget and call him 15 years later he still needs to pay
The argument of seeing other people do it is not valid, so he will have to pay. If this is a parking ticket then it won't affect anything, just be thankful they didn't hit you with a trespassing charge which could be a criminal offence.

that is wrong. unless they have an agreement with the city it's a private ticket (which is what this looks like), which means they only 2 choices. 1. they'll search up the plates and withhold diplomas/graduation to anyone in that household if they go to that university or/and 2. they send the ticket to collections after it hasn't been paid for a while. however it's more than likely they have your plate so if you park there again or anywhere on univeristy property the car will get towed.

+1 to what ShortBus said. Chances are the car and the driver will also be banned from any university property for a year, and if he is caught there he will be hit with a trespassing ticket.

True but then again all majors school would have that agreement in place. I got tickets from Seneca, Centennial and UofT on multiple occasions (never having enough change to pay) But i would put my money on it being an actual parking ticket hence a government charge
I also use to work collections and these tickets would come up as Municipality of Toronto not of the school
If you really want to see, wait a few weeks and see where the reminder letter comes from, the school or the city

here is the ticket
On the ticket, it does not say anything about the result of fail to pay
and it also said observed pulling bk gate.. does that mean its observed by a person, not a camera? if thats the case, they dont have much solid evidence ?
Could we appeal for them not having evidence? or shoould we appeal and write a apology letter? or should we just ignore it ?

Yup it's from the university not government, but either I way talk to a lawyer and see which options are available , if he did break the equipment, find out what actually broke, and so forth.
The worst is that it can be put into collections, ding his credit, and be taken to court for it

I had a University parking ticket once, and when I went to renew my sticker the DMW knew about it and wouldn't let me renew unless I paid it.....

If you get a ticket from UWO and if you are a student there, you better pay up (or appeal). You can not graduate/enrole in new courses/receive your grades if you have outstanding tickets on your account. Not sure how you can appeal the ticket though, it should say somewhere on there what your options are.
If your license plate is not registered with the school, they likely wont be able to link it to you. It might then just go to collections, which also might not let you renew your sticker until it is paid.

Honestly, Im thinking 250 bucks is waaayyyyy over priced, and is set based on the understanding you broke the gate. Come on, I can park on the city streets of toronto illegally and its like 60 bucks. I can park in a Green P not pay for a ticket and its less than that.
Do you really feel you damaged the gate? I suggest you didn't if other people were lifting it time and time again before you.
I can't comment if they are in kahoots with the ministry and you wont get your sticker, but id send them a letter and tell them that you were having issues with the thing activating, and because you saw other people lifting the thing, you thought this was the work around,
Id play stupid and silently question their ability to be cop and jury on this whole thing.

this one is tricky...because obviously they have evidence on hand that the gate was lifted. They can possibly pursue it with cops as trespassing if he doesn't pay.
If it was any other parking ticket (e.g. non-pay) you don't have to worry about it. These are privately issued tickets and they can't really go after you, except to tow the vehicle the next time it is on their property.

All this to save what, $20?
I would just pay it and learn your lessons.

Been in a similar situation where I thought the ticket would go away but like someone mentioned when renewing my sticker it came up right away.

You do know a lawyer will cost almost as much as a ticket and he
Might end up paying it anyway. Thats the problem nowadays people not wanting to own up. It's obvious that doing that is illegal, man up, paying the ticket and get on with life. And feel lucky they don't press transposing charges

How about you go to the Campus security and explain your regret and promise them it won't happen again.

Bingo. What you did IS trespassing, and you're extremely lucky you only got a ticket. That's the same as me opening your garage door and hanging out inside with my buddies.

Although, not going to lie, I've seen several people attempt this in my 3 yrs at Western. Not sure what their result is though.

I got a ticket from UWO when I was parked at London/Essex Hall while I was there for the CAISA Fashion Show and never paid. I've since renewed my stickers (many months later) without any issues.
My 2 cents.

My buddy got a ticket from UWO a couple years ago when we went to pick up our friends on campus and he never paid it. I just called him up out of curiosity as to what happened and he told me it never went to collections and he got his sticker renewed with no problems. The guys we picked up told him that the school will hold any request to graduate or enroll in courses until you pay the ticket. He didn't care since he didn't go to to UWO :chuckle

These tickets look similar to those at my school. The school's parking authority hands them out. If you have bought a parking pass using that license plate they can link it to the account. You won't be able to graduate until you have $0 balance. If they don't have your plate on file and you owe at least $50 (that least at my school) they have started going to MTO to have the plates run to produce an address. They when mail you a bill for the MTO check and the fines you owe. I always used to get $10 tickets for parking on meters (I never paid since I thought they can't do anything). Once I heard they started looking up people I stopped using the meters and paid off my $130 in fines. For the last few weeks of school I just followed people out of the gates or just called the gatehouse to say I was a courier, which is very common at my school. They don't have many cameras on the parking gates luckily.
Note: I don't condone cheating the parking office at your school. lol

interesting article, personally i say, dont worry about it, worst that can happen is they might send it to a collection agency and that might affect your credit rating...

I think York is more strict about it. I've seen York towing cars around and/or putting them into gated lots lol.

Nice, just pay it then, although lots of people said nothing will happen. But split the cost, 60 per person for a peace of mind is worth it! lol

Don't pay it. I never paid any parking tickets from University, and have never heard anything more about them. University parking tickets are private, no record of it goes against the plates. If you get multiple tickets they may tow it, so just take different cars or change the plates lol.
