so the image will be in the middle of the road for drivers to run through them?
doesn't that promote mowing down little kids? lol

I wonder what would happen when they remove the illusion. Then when a kid really is chasing down a ball they'll have cars mowing them down.

It's a "boy who cried wolf" situation.

"The girl’s image will be applied to the road in a school zone on 22nd Street just north of Inglewood Avenue, near Ecole Pauline Johnson school, on Tuesday.

Preventable.ca is paying for the $15,000 project."

I don't think a kid materializing out of the road is going to do anything but spook drivers. And then only works till you remember where they are.

It is amazing how many ways people can figure out how to waste money and endanger lives.

yah, they should hire a stuntman or something to just run out on the road and get hit by cars.
nothing like the real thing, eh? haha

it's a school zone, so the impact will be 40 or less... survivable!

I was 22 when a left-turning idiot failed to yield to me, cycling @50KM/hr on a green with a yellow jersey, on a green. Result : concussion with a year+ in a dentist's chair to replace ALL my front teeth. Anyone younger will be much more fragile and from my observations NO ONE EVER keeps to the 40KM/hr limit in a school zone. Let me be more explicit, imagine if it is your kid who is hit.............or if you have to comfort a child DYING in your arms.........

personally i think it will be a STUPID and DANGEROUS idea. Why you ask? well now imagine that a real child in another area were the image is not set up runs on the road. now in the drivers mind .....oo its just a hollograph and BOOM theres the child mowed over. I wouldnt want this to happen.

My thoughts exactly. It will make drivers less aware and alert. Scary when you think about it.

I'm sure they will just come up with a sensor so people won't have to think about it and will warn the driver of children playing in the street. :bang

Perfect solution. Want people to slow down? create a surface rated for 40km/h or less.

You are taking what i said way too personally. the whole point of my post was to point out the stupidity of the holographic child as a deterrent. that's not going to solve anything. and as i said before, it's only going to promote mowing down kids because it desensitizes the driver to obstacles, particularly along that stretch of road. Really, the most effective way to slow people down is to park a police cruiser. people usually slow down to below the speed limit then. or as others have said, speed bumps.

Based on your comments, I'm assuming you are all for this holographic child thing. Cool. More power to you. but i think it's stupid and won't do anything productive which is why i'm mocking it.

I get that this is a sore point for you obviously due to your own experiences so I'm not even going to address your personal attacks and the implication that you are making that i don't care if kids are hit or die. I'll just presume that you got heated and are passionate about the subject matter. understandably so.

Getting hit by a car at lower speeds is actually worse than getting hit by a car at faster speeds. At least from what've seen in the news...

You're correct as this subject is a touchy one for me and it did not help pulling a PUI ( Posting Under Influence) so my apologies all round.
The point is people still do not understand that they are operating a piece of machinery that can maime and easily extinguish a life ( human and animal ). This should never be taken lightly period. Adding all these "safety" features to cars and roads may initially help but it should never replace the driver's awareness of their surroundings.

Yah, I didn't take any offense to the intial comments because I understand how it can be for a person who has personally experienced certain events to be especially passionate about it. We all have one or a few instances of these in our lives. So no apologies necessary. In fact, I apologize for having seemed insensitive before.

On your statements, I agree 100%. Unfortunately it seems like the "awareness of surroundings" is in decline for the past number of years because of all the other distractions that are in our cars now. Cell phones, sat-nav, radios, etc. The very fact that we had to pass a law to tell us we can't do those things while driving says that we are on a downhill spiral.

For $4,900, I will run out chasing a ball into the road :)

Fair enough. Well for $4,800, I'll just go run back and forth across the road (heck, I could use the cardio)...
