View Full Version : Grinding around turns

I recently lowered my 2010 with Road Magnet 1.25 inch drop springs. All was well my first week of owning them, no noises etc.
Well as of this morning when ramping onto the highway (right hand turn) and ramping off the highway (also a right hand turn) I am getting a really bad grinding noise (sounds like metal on metal). I would assume it could only be attributed to being lowered. I haven't gotten an alignment yet, but I don't see why that would cause the problem. I doubt I am rubbing, as it is only a 1.25 inch drop. And the car is too new to have things like wheel bearings and CVs wear out (well at least I hope). I have no shaking in the steering, or in the pedals.
Any ideas?

How far do you have to turn the wheel.... Estimate it on the road then try to park it with the same amount of turn and have a look.

Yeah I will try that, but I don't think it was the tire rubbing, as the turns weren't that agressive. But I will look later.

It is possible that some bearings fell out of the upper strut "thingy". I can't remember what the part is called, but there is a bearing that you take off when changing springs; if any ball bearings fell out that is likely your issue.

Most likely it's the backing plate for the brake rotor, when they removed the strut to change the spring they problaby bent the backing plate a little bit and it is touching the rotor, it's kind of hard to check on the ground but you said you have to go for the alignment have them check that that when they put it on the rack to do the alignment

Someone else mentioned that. And it makes total sense. Found quite a few google hits on this too.
Donutz, it is a possibility. But the guy that installed them is a friend and would have let me know if he did that or not. Plus I consider him a pro as he can fix anything. Just seems he may have bent a crappy piece of metal.

Even just bending the backing plate a littl bit can cause that and you wouldn't even had noticed you did it. The backing plates are made pretty thin, no big deal, no big problem, easy to fix bend it back.

It's possible that some ball bearings fell out and he never noticed. Good thing is this part is relatively inexpensive.

True, just not sure what I didn't start hearing the sounds until 8 days after having them installed.

get the wheel barrings checked even though the car is new, you never know and it sounds like that could be the problem

Well I am thinking it was either a stuck pebble or the dust shield, as I couldn't replicate the sound last night or the morning after pushing the dust shield back some. So hopefully it was just a false alarm.
