SAN FRANCISCO--A developer conference can be kind of a snooze for non-programmer folks, but Research In Motion might have some rather interesting news to reveal today. After a smattering of reports of an impending BlackBerry tablet hit this spring and summer, RIM may take the opportunity during its keynote address at RIM DevCon, which kicked off at 1:15 p.m. PDT, to show off what has been dubbed the "BlackPad."

Seems like everyone's making one. Waiting on Maytag's version.. :pop

But this has potential... to be modded in a mazda3 radio since its small enough!

I still don't think this is going to have an effect on ipad sales. I mean it is much smaller but I'm still yet to see a device with a touchscreen that operates as seemlessly as a ipad.

What is interesting though is that RIM has engineered the development software to be used on macs now which will give it greater exposure to third party developers who only program apps and such on macs. So there could be some interesting apps on ipad that you may see on this "BlackPad".

Also in response to Phillie's comment this definately has car aftermarket implications however the the USB location on the side may present a challange.

^^^ Hahah, I didn't realize the Playbook had a fan club.

The part where you blew it was when you said "WHO NEEDS APPS?!"

It's a new device, no committed support yet. Sure, you'll get the traditional people who have their own interests committing to the platform (IE: Kindle for example), and others who already offer Blackberry apps (IM+, etc), but I'll wait to see if EA Games and other large companies get behind it. They haven't really gotten behind the Android platform yet, and that's a much larger platform.

It looks awesome, has a lot of potential, but it's too soon to tell, so don't go around waving your fan boy pom poms without seeing what the product can actually do in the real world. ;)

iPad is too limited, I agree, but remember that Apple usually does that so they can surprise people later and open it up. IE: Original iPhone, no apps... people were up in arms... they eventually opened up the app store and pretended it was never planned. I'm sure iPhone will get flash at some point too, since that seems like the next big thing people are wanting....

Edit: Personally, I'm holding out for a good Windows tablet or a WebOS device. Although this one looks really slick too. I wonder what the battery life will be like.

hey .. y cant the playbook have a fan club like the ipad ? :)

anyways .. apple wont be gettin flash .. thats for sure

and ok ...

apps .. ya you can make apps for this and that ..... but name me one really good app that is useful?

now on the other hand .. full flash support ... do u need apps on your computer? nope .. because you can go onto the internet from your computer go to any site you want and everything is there ...

watch movies and play music online ...
download movies or songs straight to the device ...
millions of flash games online
live video feeds

theres just so much to do with flash on a device ... that you do not need apps ... apps are already online all over the place ... all you gotta do is google it and it comes up and thats it ... done ..

if anything ... with a device like this ... specs killing the ipad ... i am 100% sure their will be tons of large companies getting behind it ..

i also know that this tablet will take over the corporate world

-cj-
09-27-2010, 06:52 PM
That's the thing, it won't take over the corporate world without apps. A good office suite, for one. I know they said native editing, but even Apple's office suite is lacking (And I'm sure this one won't be as polished). Plus even with Apple's platform, there aren't a lot of "content creation" applications available.

In the early days, Apple tried the app-less approach (Sure, without flash support), but the general consensus was that web apps sucked.

The GUI looks sexy though... Hopefully they give Apple a run for their money.

I think you mean SUN's Open Office... I think they created Java if I remember correctly, but I don't think Open Office is java based...

However, Google Docs can be run from a web browser... but in the business world most people hate it. (At least when compared to the real deal)

true .. it is not as good as office word and excel ..

but since blackberry is known as a corporate device ... im sure companies will be making office apps for the Playbook ... also remember blackberries already have "DocsToGo" which many corporate users use when on the go to edit / view documents

and remember

This OS would be so easy for developers to program for that the app store would explode almost overnight. Adobe AIR, full Flash & OpenGL too...

As a consumer this device won't be available until the spring time.... thats a full year after the iPad came out, RIM would have to be crazy if not stupid to not have advanced the technology further a year after the fact. With out pricing, battery life and a real world test drive its hard to say that it will even be competitive based on just a spec sheet. BB has struggled with their touch screen devices so far, if this doesn't improve on that experience in the real world it doesn't really matter what the specs say in a press release.

Too bad almost every industry reviewer disagrees with you... or given the numbers and credibility of professional hardware reviewers say that you as an obvious fan disagree with the many reviewers and shareholders. The Torch sounded great in the press too, and once it hit peoples hands things went downhill. I am not saying that will be the case with the PlayBook, but RIM hasn't been able to get it right so far so I wouldn't immediately jump on the bandwagon calling this a superior tablet device.

Compared to other displays, text looked blocky, and images didn't have the clarity we would have expected from a smartphone in 2010. Touch sensitivity wasn't outstanding on our review unit, making for a real lack of confidence when it came to finger tracking. We feel like there's polishing to be done on the software side that would greatly improve the experience, particularly when attempting more precise pinch-to-zoom and swipe gestures (more on that in a moment). Oh, and SurePress? Nowhere to be found on the Torch

If you're a Bold fan, then you're probably used to a pretty snappy UI... but you're also probably used to seeing some freezes and ticking clocks. That doesn't change with the Torch. As we said previously, the phone is running atop a fairly slow CPU (given the current climate) and RIM seems to be throwing a lot more at it -- in terms of functionality and graphics -- than in previous phones. The result is a mixed bag: sometimes you feel like you're blazing through the device, while other times you're presented with an aggravating freeze.

The Torch seems sluggish, underpowered, and dated from a hardware design standpoint, and BlackBerry 6, despite its new features and polish, still feels woefully behind the curve. To call the Torch the "best BlackBerry ever" wouldn't be an understatement, but unfortunately for RIM and the faithful, their best isn't nearly good enough.

hahaha its funnny how you say every industry reviewer dissagrees wit me ... yet if you ask every single person that actually owns the torch u get a totally diff review.... have u tried a torch yet? ..

seriously .. please try the device before you agree with reviewers ...

since the iphone came out ... any touch screen phone that comes out (including androids) reviewers have bashed it and have always said "it doesnt compare to the iphone" like come on .. how many touch screen devices are out there and yet they continue to say the iphone is still the best .... people need to try these devices out before they review it ... using the phone for 5 - 10 min isnt a true review

consumer electronics gave the new iphone 4 a "not recommended" review ... do you see that in any of the iphone reviews? no .. cause evey reviewer is stuck in some sort of magic world where no matter how many problems the iphone has .. it is the best phone ...

like come on .. seriously now?

anyways ... torch touch screen is amazing ... please try it for yourself and stop listening to these guys who review for a couple of min and go back to their iphone

check out some blackberry forums ... anyone that has bought a torch has disagreed with the reviewers ... and many people have switched from iphone to torch and have said the touch screens are par

We've gone full circle, I simply said we need to wait until we can get a unit in hand to see how it performs in the real world and you went on rant about how great BB's are and are now telling me that we can't trust the reviews (the very same reviews that you were using to argue that the PlayBook is a dominant tablet) so which is it lol?

How about we both take your advice and not defend or criticize it until its available to actually try in the real world since I highly doubt you've used the PlayBook either. Based on the announcement there are a lot of things that sound cool, and there are a couple things that sound like they may have the potential to not be all that great (i.e. no 3g/4g initially, no price or battery details yet etc.)

Same was true of the Torch when it first launched and based on sales volumes that doesn't seem to be the case so we'll all get to sit back and watch the tablet market unfold. Dell is in the market, samsung is coming as is HP and others. Things are heating up quickly...exciting times for this new and emerging market.

Announcing a spec sheet is one thing, sales are another. By the time some of these devices start shipping it wouldn't surprise me at all if some of the current products have or are near refreshing

agreed ...

but just a few notes ...

price was mentioned to be similar to ipads ...US$499

it will not be sold thru carrier meanin no contracts and such ... data plans would be used thru your BB ... (better then paying for 2 plans)

Actually I have both the torch and iphone 4 and Ill tell you why the iphone is better (the iphone 4 has flash by the way).

Size the torch is a big ass phone iphone is not as big, imo the iphone is still faster and smoother, the torch is not as responsive as the iphone is I find the torch still has some small imperfections in it in terms of the touch operation.

And you say who needs aps well 1 billion apps sold or something like that tends to say apps matter in this world, if it didn't why would BB make their development software mac based as well so that BB would have access to more developers.

Iphone 4 untouchable, however the interesting thing to note here is that neither apple OS or BB OS have number one market share in the north america in consumer cell phones that title actually belongs to Android and with the HUGE push that android is putting behind sports on the phone and enterprise management watch out.

torch is a big ass phone? how!??! because the keyboard slides out? :S if you dont want to use the keyboard (i dunno y you wouldnt want to) then dont slide it out and its small :S ... this isthe first time i have heard the torch being a "big ass phone"

And you say who needs aps well 1 billion apps sold or something like that tends to say apps matter in this world, if it didn't why would BB make their development software mac based as well so that BB would have access to more developers.

1 billion apps sold because it does not have the feature to go online like the Playbook would and browse the web with full flash support and view flash programs/videos/games .... do you use mini apps on your laptop or desktop? no .. because any app you need to use is either flash or a full feature app like office suite or adobe photoshop .. which has a bigger chance to be on a bb device then an apple device

Iphone 4 untouchable, however the interesting thing to note here is that neither apple OS or BB OS have number one market share in the north america in consumer cell phones that title actually belongs to Android and with the HUGE push that android is putting behind sports on the phone and enterprise management watch out.

iphone 4 is not untouchable ... ive been to many apple forums and have seen many problems reported ... an firmware update is really needed ... a i"phone" has signal issues ... how is it untouchable???

btw .. update to the newest firmware for your torch .... any "lag" you see will be gone ... new firmware fixes many problems the torch orginally had and runs alot smoother with better battery life

Ok i am partly to blame for mentioning the iphone and torch in my point but there is more than enough fanboizim on every side of the fence in this thread lol. Here's what I like about the playbook: I like the tethering, the ability to extend your phone onto the tablet is cool, the connectivity options are good, as are the HD camera's with f/r ability

I think the apps, delayed product availability to the consumer, delayed 3/4g features, potential battery life and real world performance may be the potential Achilles heel... for that we'll have to wait and see

My final point the BB stuff is all a copy from apple anyway, look at the basic operation of a torch works like an iphone, hell the storm was a copy of the iphone and look how that turned out.

I think on the bb website they have a picture of the playbook displaying something that looks allot like face time from iphone 4. Hell the ipad came out first any way.

By the time this device rolls out, Apple will have announced the next gen iPad which will either be on par or better than the Playbook. RIM fails again with a device launch, it needs to be on the market now, not 6 - 8 months from now.

They may have improved it somewhat but resolution wise it still isn't as good as the iPhone and its underpowered.

Apple designs the chip, the hw and the sw which is why features like facetime can work so well (mid call touch a button) vs. on the EVO 4g it is a separate app that has to be launched beforehand. RIM didn't mention this but the torch was not backwards compatible with all of your apps when it launched, same may be true of the playbook (at least early on).

When you start pulling from a large parts bin ala Windows style you can get a varied end user experience and you lose the integration between the chip, the hw and the sw since you are at the mercy/limitations of other companies development. The EVO 4g sounds great on the commercials but has been shunned by many owners and reviewers for not living up to the hype. features is one thing, a good integrated experience that delivers customer value, performance and battery life is something else.

Its nice to see people are so passionate about tablets lol, I would suspect RIM will have done a good job and the product will work well when it eventually comes out but by then I doubt it will be cutting edge in terms of the tablet market space. As I and mazidane said this product should really be out yesterday not six months from now but none the less, all things considered this is good for tablet computing. All competitors pushing to raise the bar and define this new segment. Exciting times for us consumers

As the PC world proved, there will not be room for 5-6 processor types, operating systems and app stacks... a market where a Droid can't talk to another Droid because the HW from two different manufactures can't enable a particular feature, where you have operating systems from RIM, Apple, Google, Microsoft, HP/Palm and Nokia to name a few isn't going to last forever. At some point this will be some consolidation/standardization based on the top 2-3 players (similar to windows, mac and linux) and the rest will fade into the history books

but they do believe in HTML5 :), try youtube in HTML5 and see how much less of a system hog it is over flash.

HTML5 is also on the Playbook

By the time this device rolls out, Apple will have announced the next gen iPad which will either be on par or better than the Playbook. RIM fails again with a device launch, it needs to be on the market now, not 6 - 8 months from now.

apple may be releasing something similar with specs to the Playbook ... BUT ... never forget ... this is a brand new OS .. BY QNX ... Apple will always be 3 years behind QNX OS ... the iOS does not even come CLOSE to the Playbook OS. RIM does not fail bro ... the Apple does .. and thats why steve jobs is scared shitless as you can tell from his Tweets yesterday ...

They may have improved it somewhat but resolution wise it still isn't as good as the iPhone and its underpowered.

ya and that resolution/screen/and specs also drain the battery of the iphone ... and its sad that in some comparison videos the torch loads faster then the iphone and also does multi tasking better then the iphone ... WITH LOWER SPECS ..

All devices will have their problems, nothing is perfect, however as far as the signal issues go, they have been exaggerated I have yet to drop a call in my two weeks of owning one.

exaggerated??? it had its own NAME + conference + press release ... they had to send people free BUMPERS to fix the problem ( which i have to say is a HUGE fail ) why would you buy such a good looking phone and cover it up with a ugly bumper? retarded ... the signal issue was not exaggerated ... it was a huge problem ... the only thing that apple has going for them are apps ... which soon wont matter because flash is now out on the Playbook and the OS is made so much easier for developers ..

Besides the battery life question not being answered, the other big question not answered is how the PB will connect to the internet.

"FULL FLASH 10.1 ... which means you can go to any website" is fine, but when most corporate CISO's still fear wireless in the office, its not really going to mean much to RIM's core customer base which are running those 250,000 BlackBerry Enterprise Servers out there. Leaving things to rely upon https in any supported browser plus the RAS of choice of the company in question pretty much means any tablet will do. RIM still has a ways to go here, but at least they've stepped on the field.

i think you forgot to read the part where it says its fully blackberry enterprise ready out of the box ... it connects to the internet via either tethering .. or wifi ... and will be launched in 3g/4g models aswell..

First off I'm not arguing I'm telling you how it is based on pure market data facts my friend. I'm not arguing based on enterprise markets either, I'm making all my points in regards to the consumer market.

First I'll start with the torch vs. iphone 4, simply put the iphone 4 has sold more than 2.5 MILLION phones since launch, I'll put the slow sales now down to stock availability. I have the iphone 4 and who cares if you put this phone in a case, 95% OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE PHONES PUT THEM IN CASES I'm willing to bet you had or have a phone in a case so what difference does it make if you have to put it in a case, if you didn't the cell phone accessory market wouldn't be as massive as it is, and also who holds the phone in a death grip any way and plus on top of that walk downtown how many people are on bluetooth head sets NOT EVEN HOLDING THE PHONE. AT&T the only network that carries the torch said they are dissappointed with the Torch's sales, I also have the Torch and sorry but the thing is not as smooth as the iphone, it's got a weak processor and overall out side of bbm what is the point of the phone barely any apps and if you want apps you have to pay more for them for some strange reason.

Now in regards to the Playbook no one on here can really argue which one is better because no one has used a playbook but the ipad has sold over 1 million units since launch and thats a very sizeable number so for the playbook we will have to wait and say. But my comments regarding apples superiority comes from the fact that sales are better for iphone 4 than the torch.

BOOM I'M DONE WITH THIS THREAD!

2.5 MILLION PHONES SINCE LAUNCH WORLDWIDE.... did u forget that the torch is only available in the states right now!??!?!??!?!??!

and why do u keep goin on and on about apps? is that all apple has? apps? get into reality and look at the top phone companies in the world ... NOKIA #1 .. FOLLOWED BY BLACKBERRY #2 ......

Without seeming bias...this will do VERYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY WELL right off the bat. Why? ENTERPRISE...for regular consumers, it will also do well...but ENTERPRISE will eat it up on a grand scale which I didnt read through the the back/forth.

I'll prob get one :). It wont convert people who have iPads but it may/will sway people who havent jumped on the tablet market. If you like Apple's iOS and everything associated it, you most likely wont go and get a Playbook.

lol, I wasn't asking if it had those specs, I know it does, I've read the specs sheet, I was just saying that its "good thing" that it comes with those specs if its going to handle flash decently.

ya and that resolution/screen/and specs also drain the battery of the iphone ... and its sad that in some comparison videos the torch loads faster then the iphone and also does multi tasking better then the iphone ... WITH LOWER SPECS ..

I charge my iPhone every 2 days and I'm a heavy user as its my primary phone for work, I have WiFi, Bluetooth and apps running in the background. I just upgraded from a BB 9700 and the battery would barely last a day with everything on, and multi tasking on it was painfully slow, not to mention waiting 10 minutes every time you have to reboot the dang thing.

I use mine without a bumper and it works just fine, I'm not going to say there weren't any issues but they were certainly blown out of proportion. Flash is there on the Android OS as well don't forget.

Don't get me wrong, I'll applaud RIM if the PlayBook turns out to be a decent product based on real life testing and not only on the spec sheet. However based on their recent history of launching devices, I'm not holding my breath. Google and Apple are the clear front runners for now....

Here is a comparison I jacked from Endgaget (see below)...everyone who is planning on getting a tablet, like a phone, choose based on comfort. If you like iOS, then get the iPad, if you want something that is not that, smaller, then consider the Playbook. It is at the end of the day your own purchasing decision. Obviously make an educated decision but, dont make your decision based on anyone else. I have had a blackberry since week 1 of the 8300 and have had many blackberry's since (currently 9700) but am still giving recommendations of the iPhone as it depends on the type of person, what they plan to use their phone for, what type of things to they like (simple UI, games, chatting with friends via sms, need/want physical keyboard)...

Personally, I'm leaning toward the Playbook however, I will be getting the second gen iPad for my parents.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/2707/comparer.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/i/comparer.jpg/)

Keep in mind that HTC will be making a tablet as well and they are known for making quality devices these days (not as much htc phones in Canada as in the U.S.).

There, now go nuts guys lol continue to attack each other :chuckle

Now I don't want insaini's head to explode here (and this will only apply to people who have used and iPad) but I think that spec is a compliment to apple.

I think it shows how efficient the apple OS is vs every other platform. I mean it is so fast and smooth and partnered with the fact that it uses the least poweerful hardware I think that is a real statement of how good apple really is.

Apple has a higher stepping stone than RIM when it comes to touch screen products. this is RIM's first actual Ipad competitor so of course it's not going to be as good as the Ipad function and capabilities. i tried out the Ipad at the apple store and i own an Ipod touch and I support apple all the way even though i have a bold 9700. I use apple products every day at work, and my iphone is my only phone, so I'm definitely an advocate for apple, but I think it's useless to spend money on something that acts as a laptop but can't even view about 30-40% of websites out there properly.

the way i see it, mac is always the first to bring new things out. and others follow. the followers should be able to double up on apples products because they have more time to plan and build, yet there not...
i for one think these tablets are stupid ideas. my iphone4 runs faster and smother than the ipad, just with a smaller screen.

theirs nothing the ipad can do that the iphone or ipod touch cant do ... atleast the blackberry tablet has a big improvement in cpu chip and memory compared to their phones ... including HD cameras .. flash .. storage space .. and alot more .. plus it works with your blackberry ... you can call it an add on

I guess the real comparison would be the BB PB with the ipad 2 that will both launch withing a month or two of each others.
The ipad is the better tablet of 2010 (sales reflect this fact). No point comparing the two right now as the ipad will be almost year old by the time the BB comes out.

Now let see what 2011 has for us. We know about the BB. Let's see what apple has to offer. Then we can argue.

ahhahahaha ... and the ipad doesnt have problems ... being first gen aswell? ... iphone 4 is on its 4th gen and still has problems ... what are you trying to say? apple is reliable and RIM isnt? ... if thats your point ... you need to rethink ...

RIM #2 phone company in world ... most secure and most reliable for certain things ... why you think the corporate world ( that run the world ) all own blackberries?

here's a question. how come RIM/blackberry doesn't have a store like Apple does so they can advertise their products? they rely on third party companies to have their products shown to the public. if your so uptight about this playbook tell RIM to open their own store. maybe that way it would give RIM a chance to show the world what they are really about.

yes that's why everyone is switching from bb to iphone.

Not in the corporate world they arn't.

I work in the IT dept at The Cooperators where all our infrastructure is BB based. We investigated / tested the iPhone platform and we found it couldn't even touch the security features RIM has to offer. Not to mention the HUGE costs involved in converting large corporation infrastructure over to iPhone. I could see the iPhone as a good platform for smaller sized businesses but like mleblond said they will never touch corporate sales on a large scale.

Not necessarily. And mleblond is right. RIM will never go out of business, they will always have a large corporate client base.

For one, Canadian government workers (like 90% of Ottawa's/Eastern Ontario's population lol) are only allowed to use blackberry devices, being the only (Canadian) product on the market that offers that level of security. iPhone would never be able to top that kind of security. And even if they tried, I doubt they would bother making the switch. I just worked on a huge government manual at work recently actually regarding blackberry and its security features. It's impossible to crack.

EDIT klym pretty much said what I did, beat me to it :chuckle

You pointed out that "Nobody is switching". Regardless if it's 2 to 200,000 people, the point i made is that people ARE switching, making your point invalid.

Regarding your rebuttal concerning the "amount" of people switching.... You point out that i only know 3 people switching from BB to iphone and you say "big deal", yet you respond with "I know more people switching to BB" and somehow that makes your point more valid? Are you 10 years old? Just stop before you make yourself look like more of a fool.

people switch to new phones everyday .. what does that mean? that because a few people switched to an iphone .. it is obv that the iphone is better than the blackberry? wrong

so the other day i found out a friend of mine bought a sony andriod .. he previously owned an iphone ... that obv makes the android better since i know someone switching from the iphone to an android ... :loco

throw on top of the fact that RIM had to build some separate infrastructure due to some guy named Barack Obama wanting to keep his blackberry lol

This is enterprise ready(which they emphasized) which like the blackberry, will be adopted by enterprise (RIMs history of security, standards, etc). The blackberry at first was an enterprise device which they still easily dominate and this will be the same. The ONLY difference is, this time they are selling to consumers with their new product right off the bat.

No need for people to call each other names over gadgets...as said, either way someone is taking your money lol

I am someone that gets to carry both an iPhone 3Gs (personal) and a Blackberry Curve (business) and I do not recommend Blackberry products. I just find that most Blackberry products are too unintuitive to use...and if the Playbook is the same way it will be on my blacklist. My Blackberry was the first piece of technology that I needed to look through the manual to figure out, what I consider to be, some pretty simple functions.

The actual device from RIM is used right now in football? I know foozeball teams have playbooks, but that can't possibly be the driving force behind the name and the device concept. (I haven't had chance to actually read up on the device fully yet).

Holy revival-from-the-dead batman - as a first post on this forum no less :P This thread is about 8 months old now.

Without incurring the ire of some really uppity people that have posted here, here are some PERSONAL observations:

* Playbook is a decent size, feels solid, however the OS is still very immature, lags
* What the **** is a GoldenTrek? Upon further inspection, it seems like yet another cheapy tablet clone...
* The Galaxy tab 10.1 is actually going to be the thinnest and lightest unit in production, once it's released to the public
* The Optimus pad looks interesting with its 3D cameras, but other than that it's another cookie cutter dual 1ghz droid-pad... Actually I think the battery life is rated to be pretty poor on this unit
* No tablet review is complete without the sales king, the ipad2. The OS is locked down tightly, apps are subject to stringent enforcement, and it costs quite a bit. That said, the build quality is good, the OS is stable, and the battery lasts for around 10+ hours

What you may want to consider is that tablets with Tegra3 (quad 1-1.2ghz) chips are right around the corner, and of course the iPad3 or Ipad2s is rumoured to be milling around an end-of-year announcement/release as well.
