View Full Version : Rock chip on windshield

Hey, so I had a small rock chip on windshield last week, with small cracks around it....very small.
So I took it to Glass Doctor in Barrie and had it covered my insurance to repair.
Now I've never had a windshield repaired and assumed all glass repair places did it the same.
The guy drilled hole where the crack was then applied some gel to it, when I left, the cracks were less visible but you could still see them.
I was told that if it were to spread "and that he never has had it happen" to come back and have the repair cost reduced off the cost of a windshield replacement through insurance.
So a couple days later now, the chip/cracks are the same if not worse after the repair! So I call speedy to ask about their service and how it works, it's totally different (vacuum the air out, and fill with a residue) and apparently "is virtually undetectable" when finished.
I called insurance to tell them about the shitty repair job, and just waiting to hear back from them, they are trying to get a hold of claims to see if they can have it repaired again waiving my deductible, be no point to replace the windshield for a small little chip.
Has anyone ever experienced this? should I have it done at Speedy or Apple auto glass?
opinions please, thanks

I've had 2 or 3 done by Apple Auto Glass and all have never cracked afterwords. *knock on wood*. I can still see my latest one after the repair but at least it's on the passenger side. They won't guarantee that it won't be visible, they just make it so the crack doesn't spread.

Thanks, do you know if Apple uses the same process as Speedy?

Yep. "Most" places use this process to repair a crack/chip. Injecting resin, etc.

Try the kit from CT first. It's really easy to use and it's only $13

I had mine done at Apples as well and it was a very small chip. This was done about a year ago. They filled the chip in with their special gel but you can still see the chip. The gel is suppose to make sure the cracks will not spread.
Do you happen to have pictures before and after?? It might help you out with your claim with your insurance company.
4164517252 his name is john. $40 dollars, if you are in Markham, and Scarborough area he will come to you. im not sure if he is willing to go to sauga or downtown. just ask him. my fathers car had it done by him and its barley noticeable.

How much do they usually charge for a chip repair? (roughly)

$80 each I think. It's been a while.
If you have glass coverage through your insurance you might be able to get it covered.

I would avoid claiming something this inexpensive. A claim is a claim and I like to avoid giving the insurance company ANY reason to raise my premium.
Thy being said, I've seen it as low as $65/chip

I've heard some pple use crazy glue to good effect - similar family of cyanoacrylates, does not wash out when dry and has refractive index close to glass when dry

Went to Ron a couple months ago to repair a rock chip on my windshield and he did a great job.
He charge me 40$ tax in and guarantees his job.
He is a retired glass guy who works out of his garage in his home.

Just remembered. The chip repair does not always get rid of the chip 100%
In most cases, you will still see a bit of it.

Went to Apple Auto Glass in Thornhill (steeles & Yonge)
met with mike there who took care of my care personally, great guy, very nice. Windshield looks good. unfortunately they weren't able to make it disappear, but at least its sealed and hopefully it wont start cracking.

on a sidenote, on my 04, with 90,000km I never had a chip.... now driving the same route, even more carefully with 08 speed I already have 6 chips. Seems as though quality has gone downhill. anyone else notice this?

I have an 07 GX sedan and I still got several chips as well. I am not really sure if it's the quality or luck because my family has a 2010 accord and the windsheild quality is the same or worse than my 3. Chips happen on that thing very quickly as well.
I wonder if insurance covers that... argue that it affects 'safety' lol they are a scam anyway, might as well play their game

I had a chip filled at apple with my old car (drilled it out and filled it) things seemed fine for a year or so but one day i noticed the "plug" fell out and only had the small drill hole there (not all the way through but still noticeable) so i went to Canadian tire to get one of their glass repair kits to fill it in again as i did not have time to go back to where i got it repaired in the first place and it seem to hold up much better (i also filled in a few other chips with a similar kit and they all seemed to do the job) now the kit is not perfect but it does seal it so you dont have to replace the entire windshield.

Met up with Ron today at his home garage to repair two rock chips. One of them was categorized as major as it was spidering.
Ron's an older retired gentleman with a lot of knowledge and experience. He uses the manual process of injecting resin into the cracks instead of the big shops with their automatic machine. Nothing beats the human touch I would say.
He's located out in the Port Union and Hwy 401 area. Highly recommended.

I bought the $13 kit at Canadian Tire for the 1 chip I had from the 400 and it worked great! Very easy to use and all I have is a small spot showing where the chip was. For someone who drives on the highway a lot (I used to do about 300km a week on the 401) I NEVER got a chip. I have even followed behind trucks to try and see if I'd get one! I guess I'm lucky!

It must have something to do with bad batches of windshields... not bad enough to be a safety issue, but bad enough that they chip very easily

I think if the crack is small and you have the time and patience, just repair it yourself. I used a DIY kit from https://crackeraser.com/ and i was pretty shocked how well it sealed the crack on my windshield.

Why are you replying to a 6 year old thread ?!!!!
FYI, chip repairs are completely covered by most insurance so why spend money on a kit and DIY when you can get it professionally done at no cost ?

If it's a very small chip, I just DIY to save the hassle of visiting a glass shop.

Aren’t they all over the place now though? Always see these guys at Crappy Tire parking lots.

Stone chip will spread bigger if it does't repair it properly and eventually, you may need to replace the whole windshield if it is not repairable.
I fixed the stone chip on my new SUV lat year, got it done at Speedy Glass. It cost $120 and insurance paid 100% of it and provided one year warranty.
No increase on my insurance renewal this year, so best is just to claim it under your insurance's comprehensive coverage. Pick the one that your insurance company authorized and drop off the car. The shop will bill the insurance company directly.
