I did local store down the street in oakville. Nobody there so no waiting. A lot of locations still without shipment.

I moved from the 9700 and so far one hour in its WOW! No iphone debate as im a heavy business user and larger screen with touch shortcuts will save time and keep my eyes on the road.

ordered one through Rogers retentions, got one for $199 ten months since I last upgraded, so if you're not due for an upgrade and the store won't do anything for you, call retentions to order!

yea i love retentions :)

I ordered iphone4 even though i did a hardware upgrade 4 months ago. WINN

I'm probably gonna sell my 9700 and get it soon. Being that street price is $600 flat (not store but street), its not bad at all since I am retaining my HUP ;)

alhope34
10-02-2010, 12:42 AM
Lol no offense taken, I was just sayin is all. I guess people just have different priorities. Almost no one I work with can understand why I'd pay $655 a month for 6 years for "just a Mazda 3 with a fancy body kit". To each their own, I suppose.

Roconne
10-02-2010, 12:55 AM
In the same sense, I could say that I would commit myself to a mental institute if I found myself paying $655/month for a car :chuckle

People spend their own money in different ways so I don't judge how people decide to spend their money. I might not always agree with things, but who am I to say what they should or shouldn't buy.

$600 is not that bad for a brand new phone, take a look at what some of the other new smartphones are/were going for. People will spend tons of money to have the latest technology.

alhope34
10-02-2010, 02:10 AM
Yea, I understand that after taking a step back and thinking about it. I don't care about newest this or best that, I buy out of necessity other than hobbies (which includes vehicles). My 5 year old samsung phone still works fine, so I think why replace it. Same as how I'll sew $14 wal mart pants back together 5 or 6 times till there isn't enough material left to sew.

Hopefully you werent referring to my post cause I said I'm gonna sell my 9700 and street price is $600. I sell mine hypothetically for $350 and that taken away from $600 = $250. Rogers gives it on 3 yr contract, for $199 and if your not lucky, $35 admin fee...so essentially I'm getting the 3 yr contract price without reuppin...thus preserving a stacked (3 yr contract price HUP without even needing to re-up).

my GF picked up the phone today. I know i was hating on it when they first announced it, but seeing it in person, its pretty sexy lol.. navigating around the software is a bit laggy cause of the low processor, and for some reason the phone will not stay locked after you press the lock button (could be a reason for this, just havent read the manual yet) but overall its a nice phone.

Don't let me start again with the BlackBerry vs iPhone discussion now.

I've used every single BlackBerry released to date since the 8300 and every iPhone since the 3G. I know what was good and what isn't today about the platforms.

send and receive about 20 emails a day
bbm about 7 hours a day (constant)
youtube videos on the train (half an hour)
browsing on internet about an hour a day
games about 15 min a day
on the phone for about half an hour a day

from 7 am till 11 pm usuage

i am left with 1 bar before i recharge it

this is with 100% brightness .... when i had my brightness set to 30% ( and was still BRIGHT ) ... i use to have about a half bar more left every day ... but then i got a privacy screen which took away brightness so now i use it at 100%...

also i noticed the holster saves a lot of battery by putting it to sleep

had mine since Thursday morning and I love it. It's fast, no lag. You can actually browse the internet now, social feeds rock, OS 6 rocks, camera phone is improved by 1000 times and it goes on.

debating about putting a pedobear on the back of the slider ;)

But yeah this phone rocks.

Rumours have it the new bold will come out with os6 leaving the 9700 on os 5...just read up on crackberry.com

My friend works at RIM, I tried OS6 back in May on the Torch. I've also tried a "Curve" that looks like the Bold 9700 but with EDGE only running OS6. (Not sure if this will make it as a production model).

BB OS is crap for one reason, it uses Java.

they said carriers will EITHER give you the OS for the 9700 OR sell a modded 9700 as the next bold. Rogers is to release it in late October start of November. I couldn't wait and wanted the better processor and more memory. My bold was laggy because of lack of memory...

Isn't the next bold is just the same unit with more memory, better camera?

Either way, my money is on nothing ground-breaking for the next little while. Odin-refresh (aka storm2.5), Onyx-refresh (aka Bold2.5).... Just re-hashes for the christmas season. Oh, and they may sprinkle something else bland in the mix like a pink/blue/red bold or something like that.

Really? you must be on it constantly ... and streaming videos... and... i don't know what else...cause think even if i tried to drain the battery as much as I could during the day it wouldnt die before getting home from work. (8AM-6PM). the most i've got it down was 50% during that time with IM's and emails all day. then goes down to about 20% after like 2.5 hours of talk time in the evening. your battery is broke!

the other night, i got about 4 hours of talk time and had 35%battery life left from full.

SilentJay
10-06-2010, 11:02 AM
^^^ Unfortunately, i'm not - I use it from time to talk on, but never more than 10 minute conversations. Using either the latest OS or leaked OSes, same battery life. I've gotten it swapped out with another brand new unit, same idea.

I'm gonna try to give the phone to my buddy to load in OS6 and see if that helps, but thus far, it's been a great phone and all, but the battery stinks for me.

i got to mess around with the torch at dundas square today and theres one thing bugging me. When you text message with the onscreen keyboard, its not a full qwerty keyboard but instead the "pearl" keypad when it is vertical; but when you turn it horizontal it becomes a full keyboard. Just a FYI for anyone maybe thinking about going from iphone to bb (like me).

If by being like the "pearl" keypad you mean a few letters are grouped together in one key, then that is not the case when vertical, I have the Torch and vertical or horizontal, I get a full qwerty keyboard (maybe its some weird setting on the one you tried). But really, if you have a physical keyboard on the phone, why would you bother using the touch screen keyboard...

Played with a torch about 2 weeks ago. It is def an eye catcher, and build quality is pretty solid. The new OS is a huge improvement. Surfing is now bearable , but not up to speed with with the iPhone. I found it to be a bit sluggish when surfing picture heavy websites. The touch screen is also much improved when compared to a storm.

Rim and apple need to come together and dominate the smartphone market - best Of both worlds. I want a BB with iOS + bbm + all the apple apps !

What? Where'd that come from? Man, you're pretty much downright hostile whenever you sense anyone talking "poorly" of RIM :P

What I was suggesting by my statement, is that apple would need to invest butt-load of money to catch up, infrastructure-wise, to be able to facilitate BBM and push-emails the same way RIM does.

Going into construction you will probably want a more solid phone (less moving parts the better). A 9780 is a better candidate for that purpose. Just get one with an Otterbox case to go with the 9780 and your phone will be almost invincible. My buddy works in a shop environment, and the Otterbox case on his 9700 has done him wonders. I will be looking at getting one myself once RIM releases the Triton 4G sometime next year.

A lot of people said that you would either just the touchscreen or the keypad.
But to be honest, I use both! You can't have long nails & have this phone though since the keypad is smaller.
I love love love the 9800 =) The social feeds app is the BOMB, I can tweet/update my FB status/update my BB status/update my MSN status/update my MySpace status/update my Yahoo! Messenger status all in one shot!! Ahhh!

I also like the Universal search, you can have the option to search for the word in your Facebook, Text Msgs, Emails, Contacts List, Google, Youtube, Calendar etc.

There's a lot more stuff that I can talk about =P

Now..I just need a screen protector and a case :)

Btw what kind of issues are they talking about on the Torch?

I heard stuff like lagging issues, and slow processor

Anyways I tried the 9800 and Im really turned off because of how heavy and bulky it feels. Coming from the Galaxy S which is super light, I just cant justify the bulkyness of the Torch.
I think im going to look for a Desire HD or just get the Desire Z. But in the mean time, im going to grab a 9700.

Lagging is largely solved via OS update, preceeded by shrinking all the bloat out of the OS.

The "slower" processor isn't all that noticable unless you're "gaming" on the device. I own a galaxy s now, and can say that the experience is pretty similar, besides 3d work. Think about it - a 624MHz processor is able to render webpages only a bit slower than a 1Ghz droid/apple phone, while maintaining a pretty long battery life.

Conversely, the unfortunate part for me, was that the phone just didn't "feel" right. You're right about the bulk, but also because the fit-and-finish just wasn't there. A wobbly screen and loose keyboard kinda did it in for me. A front-facing camera would have been great, and a better rear camera would've been nice too.

yea you are right about the slower processor not that noticeable, but I cant handle the look of the Torch, it looks like a old outdated phone. Not sleek at all.
I just ended up going back to a 9700, until i come across another phone i like.

RIM has to step up their game, like someone mentioned, iphone + BB mixed phone would be awesome.

iPhone + BB is the Torch! lol
I don't think it's slow at all lol
You can also set how sensitive everything is.
I love it, no complaints from me.

And how does it lag? My phone hasnt lagged at all.

They are coming out with a thinner Torch for people with these comments.

Check toronto.kijiji.ca and toronto.craigslist.org. I picked up my Torch off someone BNIB way less then that cash. Just be careful (not that something will happen but it can).
