Looking to pickup a wireless router for my GF. I've had a Linksys and SMC and haven't been too happy with them. Must have the usual features: WEP/ WPA, signal boost would be nice as well as printer server too. Not looking to spend too much and wonder what people here have been using.

Thx

D-Link Xtreme Wireless N Router (DIR-655) (http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/d-link-xtreme-wireless-n-router-dir-655/10082039.aspx?path=692254fc8477fefc0efc18acd6f0278 7en02)

I have this one. I'm happy with it and it does have a print server part to it as well.

If u want to upgrade this is the new one, i would suggest looking into NCIX or Canadacomputers to buy router and other computer parts, sometimes futureshop has lower prices and also Bestbuy has the pricematch thing.
NCIX has a new store in the GTA now to so its perfect.

+1 On this router. I am a PC/LAN Analyst with the Cooperators and I have it in my home. Easy to set up, use and have had no issues so far. Check out NCIX rather than futureshop

i had the 628 but my parents have it now since the house im in came with one. i never had issues with it. the 625 i had before had some issues though. if you go with dlink i would go with one of the newer ones like 815.

we have a linlksys in the house and its a piece of crap. range sucks even with an extra antenna on it.

also you cna look into the wrt firmware depending on what model you get. its awesome, you can do a lot of things with routers that have the funstions usually locked. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Get a router than allows you to use DD-WRT. 3rd party firmware is the best, it is more frequently updated and is a lot more functional than normal firmware.

The most recommended router for this is WRT54GL, its hard to find brand new, if you find one on Kijiji. I totally recommend it.

Yeah but now you're stuck with an old LinkSys AND max 54-G wireless. Don't get me wrong, they were great back in the day, but there's better out there now.

I'm using a Linksys WRT-610n at home, no speed or distance issues and hardly requires a reboot.

I have a lot of peers that run the DIR-655 and love it as well.

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 V4 that I will sell you for $50 as I just got a Time Capsule (back up and router)

The Linksys Wireless AP (Access Point) Model # BEFW11S4 does a very good job of bringing this standard to the average PC user. In addition to acting as a wireless AP it also functions as a standard Cable/DSL router and 4 port switch. Using the IEEE 802.11b wireless standard, it provides a very reliable connection with incredible range. (Linksys says 91m indoors & 457m outdoors, however I did not have the chance to test these claims) It provides numerous options for network administrators, such as blocking specific internal users’ access through filters. Also, it is capable of 128-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) protection.

In conclusion, The Linksys BEFW11S4 Etherfast ® Wireless AP + Cable/DSL Router is an incredibly easy to use wireless device. After using this router and looking back at my previous bouts with wireless technology, I am simply amazed. Wireless technology has come a long way, and Linksys has done a bang up job of bringing it to the average household computer user. For the average computer user, this wireless router will be a good choice

This has been very consistent for me for years, and is now surplus (http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAd?AdId=231012625) since I have a wifi router as part of Bell's Fibe service.

NCIX has a new store in the GTA now to so its perfect.

Check canadacomputers.com and tigerdirect.ca and ncix first...then futureshop/bestbuy, sometimes futureshop/bestbuy sales go under cost and beat the smaller stores (used to work computers there)...but in all other cases, the first three stores are generally cheaper...

I've been looking at the Asus RT-N16 (best one for DD-WRT or Tomato support -- N support, Gigabit, USB):

http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=63587

Except I'm waiting on MLPPP patch for Tomato...

People said the stock firmware is terrible. Re-flash with DD-WRT or Tomato.

note: newer and more expensive does NOT mean better. Look at review sites like tom's hardware and stuff. I have the D-link one mentioned in the second post and it's been fine. Any if you have ANYTHING that isn't Wieless-N compatible (cell phone for example) your router will default to the slower speed for all devices. You will never comenear to 300mbs. Expect about 50-70mbs from a wireless-N connection.

Linksys WRT54GL is the only one I will turn to and then load Tomato customer firmware for stability if you don't mind not having wireless N. After version 3 on the WRT54G series, the quality has gone down.
