I know a thread was posed on RFD and I found the link:

http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20101005/new-parking-bylaw-101005/20101005/?hub=TorontoNewHome

Link to the actual bylaw that passed: (Go to parking section (10.5.80) begins on page 29.)

Does anybody think this is simply a cash grab or due to people who complain that they rent out their parking spots to someone else EVEN though its your property. For example, if you have a single garage on your property, you are allowed one car in the garage and one car on the driveway. This is like saying you can only have one child per house. Thoughts / Opinions?

It's bullshit, i was just about to post this

lets take an Average modest Family, Two Adults and 2 kids, chances are mom and dad each have a car, the kids grow up and both need a car for work and or school. (this is my family). We park 3 cars on our driveway and 1 in the garage. we have a fairly big driveway but it was made that way we did not expand it.

I cannot possibly see this staying for long. Growing families and growing costs of living means kids are living at home longer, so they will have a car fir each kid for a few years before they move out. On my street alone there are many cases like this where there are 3 or 4 cars per household and this is in Malvern let alone a "richer" area

However, CTY states that Police won't traffic right away and will only ticket on complaints. I wonder how it works for multi million houses.

This is why I don't respect politicians.

this is for new home construction only and does not apply to houses built before Oct 1 2010. But leave it to Toronto to make a bylaw like this, thats rediculous. The only thing it's going to do is make more people commute and move out of the 416.

Before we complain why not actually look at it. First of all it is ONLY for new houses, and second of all it is not going to be enforced for anything other than complaints. The law was not created to stop people from having 4 cars in the driveway that are actually driven. It's to stop people from having 2 driveable cars, and 2 pieces of junk in the driveway. I presently have 2 houses in my neighborhood where they have at least 2 cars in their driveway, filled with junk that have not been moved in over 2 years. I believe this law is to help these situations

I wonder how it works for multi million houses. This will fall under a by-law, therefor the police will have nothing to do with it. Bylaw officers will be the ones who ticket, and it will only be on a 'complaint' basis only. They wont be out there actively searching for people to ticket.

I don't really see how having junk cars in the driveway should really matter though. It's on your property and if I wanted to have shit in my driveway (civic) then I should be allowed to because it's MY driveway. What's next, the passing of a by-law that limits your household to no more than 3 TV's? Because there are tons of people who hoard old ass tv's that are not "usable".

they also have a bylaw for older houses that restrict owners from widening or lengthening their driveway
Even if you purchased a house decades ago, and the PO widened their driveway - the new owners could be fined and or forced to return it back to normal lengths (break up the driveway)

I understand it only affects new home, but this is a big problem, even on the complaint basis.

1) as i started before kids are living at home longer then ever, and in a few years this will be a major problem

2) complaints, it's a $5,000 charge, this will cause alot of bad blood for people in the neighbor hood. Just imagine if someone didn't like you, they could screw you over with a $5, 000 charge, thats ridicules, ( i know $5000 is the max but still thats a huge fine)

There is no reason to have this law, if it's for people having junk on their driveway then there are already by-laws in place to address that for having an unkept property.

Within a year New home buyers will be able to "apply" for a Multi-Vehicle parking permit, for a small taxable service fee of $3928716619.42

Whichever mayor that legally vows to axe this by-law, will get my vote.

Having junk cars in your driveway is just as bad as having a car on cinder blocks or a broken down washing machine on your lawn. PearlM3 said the cars haven't moved in 2 years which most likely means the next move will be to the wreckers.

Basically, why keep a piece of shit in your driveway if it doesn't run and you have no plans to get it running? It makes the neighbourhood look like shit and property values go down.

LOL... Oh Phil...

Anyways, I do agree that this bylaw is BS, but it does not affect me as I'm in the 905, so I couldn't care less lmao.

No matter what the govt says, this by-law isn't for junkers that sit in driveways for years and years.

C'mon honestly. Drive down a residential street and count how many houses have dead beat cars in the driveway.

This evening, I took my daughter for a stroll - and counted 3 cars, on a residential street of 300 houses.. 2 of which were classics under a tarp. And only one with all 4 tires flat.

Now if I lived in a new development, this by-law really targets 1 car out of 300, yet 2 and possibly 30 more will be considered violators.

Because a property owner should be able to if they want. Washing machine on your lawn is a little much. But I still think it would be the property owners decision if he/she wants a POS in the driveway.

+1
if the by law is targetting "eye-sores", where's the by-law that states I can't paint my garage 29-colours in zigzag motion and polkadots. Or the bylaw that stated you must mow your front lawn at least once a month.

I agree with this, you can't really force someone to throw away a car that they for some reason feel they still want (unless its causing harm to someone or the environment).

Another reason I would NEVER live in Toronto.... yay for suburbs!!
